Martyn | 299 comments There's been a legal case in Israel rumbling for a while now over documents, manuscripts, letters, etc. belonging to Franz Kafka to be made public, i.e., scholars want to get their grubby paws on the treasure chest!

Two sisters - Eva Hoffe and Ruti Wisler - have sort an injunction against the contents being made public because it would 'threaten their dignity and privacy'. Not sure why, and the Guardian report doesn't mention why, either.

The two sisters inherited the boxes from their mother who was the assistant of Max Brod. The Tel Aviv national library call the legal victory "at long last Dr Max Brod's last known will is beginning to be executed".

Funny, because his friend's wasn't. Kafka wanted all his writing destroyed upon his death. Recently in a book it was also made known old Franz liked pornography - a lot. Perhaps these boxes are nothing but a big stack of used porno mags and erotica.

No doubt the contents will end up being pilfered and end up in auction houses and sold for stupid amounts of money.

Franz would be rolling in his grave.

Nice to know I'm not the only one to like porno. I wonder what Franz would make of the easy availibiity of internet porn?

Jim | 27 comments I think Kafka would see irony in the controversy over his work given his depictions of the strangeness of the relation of the state to the individual in his brilliant books

I don't know, the way I feel about Kafka's wishes being thwarted by Max Brod is that if you want anything of yours destroyed, do it yourself. If you don't do it during your lifetime, there's really no excuse unless you died suddenly and unexpectedly, which wasn't the case with Kafka. Plus, I know I'm more than a bit subjective about this because I love Kafka's work, but nothing was really lost with more of Kafka's work being given to the world, so I support what Max Brod did.
