I liked the way Clive gave enough information to make the reader feel as if they knew a character, and then revealed just a bit more to throw us off base. I was surprised when I learned that Little Bee was 16. I also found myself taken back by how brave and womanly she was in the face of adversity. She stood up to Lawrence like a seasoned champ.
I found interesting the emphasis on death in this book. Perhaps what threw me off in the realization that Little Bee was 16 was feeling as if she must be older because of the observations she continually made regarding ending her own life if "the men came". It was an interesting book, and I felt that it was superbly written, but it also left me squeamish about the hidden truths in society, no matter the global location.
