Hi everyone -
I have been a loyal Amazon Customer for a number of years, mistakenly believing they offered the best price (and with free shipping on a $25.00 purchase), the best all around bargain. I have since discovered THE BOOK DEPOSITORY through one of Jewel's earlier posts.
Just for the heck of it- I searched their database for THE HIGHEST STAKES and found they offer the lowest price I have yet seen $10.31 (list is $15.95)AND free shipping worldwide! What a bargain!
I will probably place my next book order with them. (I usually buy about 10 books a month). Has anyone else purchased from them before?

Jackie (thenightowl) I haven't purchased from them, but people I know that have used them always rave about the deals. Apparently, you can sign up for online coupons as well so that adds the savings if you're into online ordering.

Yeah Baby! I ADORE shopping in my bunny slippers!

Jackie (thenightowl) Ha! See I'm a stroke and sniff kinda girl. LOVE book sales, particulary the library ones. I'm going to a HUGE one this weekend at the Pequot Library.

message 5: by Misfit (new)

Misfit I've heard good and bad. There's been some chat over at HFO (historicalfictiononline.com) about the BD US maybe baiting and switching prices and availability.

I can't judge though, as I'm pretty much a library girl having one of the greatest library systems in the US. They buy almost everything, and have plenty of the oldies as well.

Hi Sandi - It's in the UK with free shipping to 90 countries (Canada is among them)! Here's the link : http://www.bookdepository.com/
They also appear to have the best book prices.
I'll be placing my next order with them. Let me know if you do also.

Sandi *~The Pirate Wench~* (thepiratewench) | 133 comments FREE??? To Canada?? are you sure? I wish I knew about them before..thanks Emery...III check out their books..I know I will be ordering..I have a list already...:)

Let me know how it goes and when you order, and be sure to add THE HIGHEST STAKES LOL!)
You can actually thank our RHFL member Jewel for sharing this! I had never heard of the Book Depository until she mentioned them in a post. Good news needs to be shared!

Sandi *~The Pirate Wench~* (thepiratewench) | 133 comments I had already bought it at Amazon and paid the full price!..ah well..the Author is worth it! :)

Sandi *~The Pirate Wench~* (thepiratewench) | 133 comments Emery..I havent checked out yet the bookdepository yet..Im sure it has free shipping ..but what about the exchange rate? there must be a catch here(for me) if I order a book on say..ebay from a seller outside of canada. On my card I use to charge it for I pay the exchange rate...which is always higher..then shipping too. now if I order a used book threw amazon.ca Im not charged the exchange because Im going threw a "canadian" company. you & others dont have to pay this cause your in the States.when I use to buy from ebay a $3.00 book would end up double plus shipping when all said & done..any other Canadians out there who has bought from there?..III check it out ...

This is great news Jill. I have been using Amazon or The Nile and Fishpond in Australia and the BD is cheaper than all (Amazon list price is cheaper but would have to pay postage there). Is there a reason why you use the UK site rather than US? Do you have to pay postage to Aus?

Sandi- Please let us know how it works out for you.

message 17: by Marg (new)

Marg (margreads) | 14 comments I use Book Depository regularly and it definitely works out cheaper for me to buy from there than it does to go to the bookstore. As Jill mentioned above, the books here in Australia are very expensive.

It is at least worth keeping open as an option.

message 18: by Marg (last edited Jul 22, 2010 09:06PM) (new)

Marg (margreads) | 14 comments I usually check both. The other week I did a comparison on one particular book to see how online prices compared between BD UK or BD US and then Australian online companies, and the differences were shocking.

There is another site called Booko.com.au that does the comparison for you, and tells you what the cheapest online price is for you which can be handy. For example, I just looked up one of Elizabeth Chadwick's books for the fun of it, and the prices vary from $11.45AU from Book Depository US to $39.49AU from an Australian company (correction NZ company). The prices quoted include shipping as well, so you can see exactly how much it is going to cost you.

message 19: by Marg (new)

Marg (margreads) | 14 comments Booktopia is good when they are on sale, but I pretty much do all my book shopping at BD.

message 20: by Jewel (new)

Jewel | 40 comments Thank you guys,
But as much as I like to take the credit for this, I actually did read about it here somewhere, I have to go and check it and credit it correctly!
But I want to share this info with you as well, I went and checked the order that I had planned on amazon on the BD site, and even though some books were a little more expensive, 2 or less dollars, the shipping on amazon was going to cost me 55 $??!! The whole amazon order was 107.50$ with shipment, on the BD it was 62.6$?? On the same books, only 4 $ difference on the actual book prices.
I'm just sorry I paid so much on shippment with amazon before.
I really have to go back to the forums and find the person who pointed it out for us and thank her again .

Jewel | 40 comments It was Julie, in the general questions discussion.
Thank you very much Julie

Sandi *~The Pirate Wench~* (thepiratewench) | 133 comments OK..this is how it works for me..being in Canada. I wrote down the prices of the books I wanted on my amazon.ca wish list..I then compared the prices to bookdepository...all of the books there were only $2.00 cheaper..a few were more..the difference for me is at amazon I have to spend over $39 to get free shipping (about $6.98) so I can never buy just one book..so at BD I can do that & save on shipping as well as the book...I got myself 3 books for $28.00 no shipping...amazon books would have cost me $6.00 more for the books I bought AND I would have had to buy 1 more book! so yes big saving! and I love that I can now buy just the one book if I want!So BIG thank-you to julie & all you other members who helped me out..nothing like a new bookstore to shop at AND save! :)

message 27: by Joanne (new)

Joanne | 3 comments I've just put together my own website Historical Romance Review and have done some research/case studies into the best place to buy books online. The Book Depository is definitely the best place if you don't have an online Amazon store in your country. If you do have an Amazon store then they are fairly comparable in price, it's best to check the book individually and you also have to check different publishers as the price differs also. I had a look at a lot of different book comparison websites and overall they are not that accurate...

message 28: by Bronwen (new)

Bronwen Evans (bronwenevans) | 1 comments Hi everyone - I live in New Zealand and I wouldn't be able to read half the number of books I do read without Book depository. For starters not all e-books can be downloaded and read in NZ yet due to DRM issues from Amazon or B&N. Hardly any romance books, except the NY times books, are brought into NZ so reading new authors is almost impossible. And if they do hit the shelves here, they are so expensive - about $22NZ. So for about $12NZ I can buy from Book Depository and get FREE delivery to NZ from the UK - how amazing is that.

Hi Bronwen!
Yes - the Book Depository is great! I use them whenever I do a group giveaway so that our international members will be included. I will also use them for our reading challenge this year.

message 30: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Thank you for bringing attention to the Book Depository. I just placed my first order and was surprised to find that not only were all the books I ordered cheaper than B & N (with the membership), but that there is no tax or shipping on any order. I can't wait to receive my books!

message 31: by [deleted user] (new)

The Book Depository is awesome, fast and very customer friendly!

message 32: by Linda (new)

Linda Banche (lindabanche) | 7 comments I buy from The Book Depository all the time. Most of their books are discounted, but the best discounts are when you pre-order a book. So, if you know you absolutely have to have a certain book, pre-order it there.

And even if you buy it at the regular discount, you can't go wrong with free shipping.

And in May, 2011, an extra 10% off with coupon code MAY11

message 33: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Wiswell | 1 comments Hey guys,

I just wanted to share with you my experience with the Book Depository....

I purchased a book, for what I thought was a good deal- only to discover a few days later when I looked at my credit card that the Book Depository had charged my credit card the cost of the book in Great British Pounds- so my credit card charged me a hefty foreign transaction fee.

I contacted the book depository- and effectively they said "we didn't charge you that, not our problem".

Needless to say- I'm frustrated that they neglect to mention ANYWHERE on their site that buying something with them might be more expensive then you bargain for when you factor in the potential for foreign transaction fees.

In the end, the book that I thought I was getting cheap, turned out to be more expensive than the one I could have bought off Amazon.

AVOID unless you want to pay hidden fees!

message 34: by Misfit (new)

Misfit I haven't used them myself, but I have heard chat from others with mixed results, and I guess it's great for those in OZ and New Zealand where the postage is so high.

One thing we have noticed, is that some highly popular books not yet available in the US like Chadwick's The Summer Queen and the new UK anniversary edition of The Sunne in Splendour show as "currently unavailable" on BD, yet you can order them immediately from Amazon UK (note: Amazon owns BD) and other UK booksellers. We were chatting about this on another site, and who were outside the US could see those two books as available, while anyone in the US who checked they showed as unavailable.

Trying to get out of paying the free shipping and directing the traffic to Amazon UK?

Sandi *~The Pirate Wench~* (thepiratewench) | 133 comments I always buy from them because of release date and shipping is free and have never had a problem. Once a book didn't arrive and they shipped me another at no cost. And their books are way cheaper.

message 36: by Jewel (new)

Jewel | 40 comments I've never had a problem with them as well.
It's cheaper for me because of the shipping.

I guess we just have to pay more attention now.

Yay for Goodreads! I'll order something and see if it comes to me mauled by a dog, or surprisingly fine. They seem to be the only opinions online.

Delta (_delta) | 4 comments Here is another great vendor for you: Better World Books, http://www.betterworldbooks.com/

Not only do they have free shipping worldwide, but they also buy back books with free shipping, and a portion of their profits go to fund world literacy projects for the underprivileged. I've been buying from them for about 6 years now and have never had a problem. BetterWorldBooks is a great place to buy used books; new books; and to find random, rare, and out-of-print books (hit-and-miss), and their prices are low on used books (I don't know how they compare on new). Geez, this sounds like a commercial, but I really am just a very happy customer. :D
