Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I'm not a rereader so I purge books after I've read them. I do 3 trading sites: paperbackswap.com, bookmooch.com and booksfreeswap.com. PBS is my preferred site so anything that meets their posting guidelines and isn't super heavily posted goes there first. Although lately, I've been offering more books on booksfree because the requestor pays teh postage there and I have a nice credit stash built up on pbs and bookmooch.

Anything that just isn't moving anywhere, I donate to the thrift store but not usually until I have to move.

message 2: by Angie (new)

Angie | 185 comments I put most of mine on readitswapit.co.uk. Only usually paperbacks as hardbacks cost too much to post, so those I give to charity.
One day I plan to have enough money that I can have a big house with a library so I will not have to get rid of any books - however until then I must get rid of them:(
At least with Read It Swap It I get a book back for the cost of postage :)

message 3: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. Me too, Angie, I want a room lined in matching bookshelves floor to ceiling with a comfy chair and a wonderful lamp and all my easily accessible - if I ever win to lottery that will be #3 on my list :)

message 4: by Alyssa (new)

Alyssa (shyluck13) I just keep them in a box in my closet - in case kids in the future want to read them, or I have friends who're looking for it. I like to keep my books :) no matter how much space or how torn they are

message 5: by ~Vixhen~ (new)

~Vixhen~ (vixhen) I donate my books to my local library. There are a few series that I have kept, but the majority are given away.

message 6: by Sashana (new)

Sashana I give them to my grandma and she gives them to the Goodwill or ships them to the poor childen in my home country, Jamaica.

Carol Cork *Young at Heart Oldie* (httpsrakesandrascalswordpresscom) I donate my books to charity.

message 8: by Kristina (new)

Kristina (volcanicpunk) If its a book I re-read, or really liked I keep it on my shelves I keep building all over my room, other than that its to paperbackswap.com

message 9: by Irene (new)

Irene Hollimon | 52 comments what do I do with my old books? Nothing really- they're all stored on my computer- ebooks

message 10: by [deleted user] (new)

I only keep a book if it carries some significance to me or effected me in some way. All the others get passed on to friends or given to the library. I use an ereader now so I just keep all my books on it that ive read.

message 11: by Lauren (new)

Lauren | 931 comments I keep most of my books because I find it nice to have a collection and am constantly lending them to my friends. What do I do with old books? I donate them to goodwill or our school library. Lots of younger-aged books I give to my friend's sibilings.

message 12: by Nikki (new)

Nikki Nikki (nomadic-nikki) I use bookcrossing. But only for books that I didn't really like, the ones I like I keep and read again (or just look at on my shelf). There have been two times in my life when I have had to completely give up my book collection so now I am pretty protective of it.

message 13: by Lauren (new)

Lauren | 931 comments What's bookcrossing? I'm sorry to hear about you losing your collection :(

message 14: by Lisarenee (last edited Aug 13, 2010 04:24AM) (new)

Lisarenee | 7659 comments Lauren according to Wikipedia,

"BookCrossing (also: BC, BCing or BXing) is defined as "the practice of leaving a book in a public place to be picked up and read by others, who then do likewise." The term is derived from bookcrossing.com, a free online book club which began in order to encourage the practice, aiming to "make the whole world a library."

Here is a link that talks about them on their web site bookcrossing:

message 15: by Arch (new)

Arch | 133 comments I donate the books to the Salvation Army. I only keeps books that I liked or if a buddy of mine had it on their wish list and I haven't had a chance to ship it out to them yet, but other than that, if I've read a book and it wasn't a keeper for me, it gets donated.

Sounds a little like me. Pass it around the group of friends.

message 18: by Beth (new)

Beth | 2 comments if i know that i will never read them again, i leave them in the lobby of my apartment building...someone always takes them :) and if i love them, i keep them, much to my husbands dismay!

Lisarenee | 7659 comments Beth wrote, "and if i love them, i keep them, much to my husbands dismay!"

My hubby once asked if he should be worried by all the books that were stacked up around our room. I told him as long as they don't start stacking up on his side of the bed he's got nothing to worry about. LOL

Beth I think it's cool that you leave your unwanted books in the lobby. I bet your neighbors love you very much.

message 22: by Lauren (new)

Lauren | 931 comments Yea, I'd love to have you as a neighbor!

message 23: by Jodie (new)

Jodie | 16 comments I collect them. Put them on a shelf and wait until I forget the plot or I just have that crave to read it a again.

message 24: by Lauren (new)

Lauren | 931 comments Jodie, sounds like a great method! :)

Lauren | 931 comments Cool :) Do you have a large collection of books?

Nicolle Alyssa wrote: "I just keep them in a box in my closet - in case kids in the future want to read them, or I have friends who're looking for it. I like to keep my books :) no matter how much space or how torn they are"

This is what I do! I cannot throw a book away, I went to an art exibition and they had sculptures made of torn books and I was distraught, how could you tear a book?! (and i'm a huge fan of art)

message 27: by Sheila (new)

Sheila (sheilaj) What do I do with books I've read? I return them to the library! I have low vision and therefore require books in large print or audio. I envy people that can read paperbacks, but am thankful that my local library is in a system with a bunch of other libraries and I can usually order up what I want in lp or audio.

message 28: by Tai (new)

Tai (msglam) | 101 comments Pre-nook - I would reread my favorites and keep at least the last book in a series so I could refresh when the next book was being released. But really only purging when I needed more room for new books. Since I got my nook I keep them all cause I'll never run out of room. Love e-books.

Bri (silversleep) I take them to this used bookstore that will give you money for them. I gave away like 100 books last month and got 30 dollars and then spent that 30 dollars at the same store buying new books xD so that store loves me. they get books and money off of me ;)

message 31: by Stacy (last edited Aug 21, 2010 06:50AM) (new)

Stacy Simpson (stacys53177) It depends on if I like them or not...If they are good and I enjoyed them I keep them for my son who is 3 to read when he is older...something me and his father decided to do.

If I dont like them I try to sell them at work and if they dont sell I donate them to the thrift store in town.

Unapologetic_Bookaholic @Mary I do like you plus I have a specific swap group for erotica, since its more expensive to by erotic romance. It is also harder to find erotica on PBS and other swap sites.

message 37: by Lisarenee (new)

Lisarenee | 7659 comments I usually can't find books I'm looking for on the goodreads swap no matter what I'm looking for.

message 38: by Sashana (new)

Sashana I guess good reads has a long way to go when it comes to book swapping.

Sans Bri wrote: "I take them to this used bookstore that will give you money for them. I gave away like 100 books last month and got 30 dollars and then spent that 30 dollars at the same store buying new books xD s..."

Bri, that's exactly what I do. I'm a weekly visitor to my local Half Price Books. Of course, I don't get rid of many books (hence the need to continually build new bookcases) since I love so many of them. But when I do, I sell them there then use the money at the same shop to buy more. I wouldn't want those empty spaces on my shelf to get too lonely.

Sans Lisarenee wrote: "I usually can't find books I'm looking for on the goodreads swap no matter what I'm looking for."

Same here, Lisa. It's a little disappointing but I figure it's a sign that I need to hie myself to Half Price to check their inventory again. I really do love that store, especially since they're constantly getting "new" books and restocking the shelves. I've found out of print, hard to find books in great condition for a few dollars. Bliss.
