SOLVED - dolls that come alive in an attic? [s]

I think the dolls sort of reveal themselves to the child protagonist of the book. It's an old house and access to the attic is in the child's room but the access has been hidden. The dolls scratch and the child goes looking for the noise and discovers the way into the attic and the dolls. I can't remember where the story goes from there and sometimes I think I have mixed this story up with The Owl Service. I do remember it having a similar moody/eerie/atmospheric tone...
