I do use 2x on audiobooks, but usually only to skip any preamble/intro.

Like Tamahome said, you can fool iTunes to thinking it's an audiobook by changing its info (right-click on it, click "Get Info," go to the "Options" tab, and change Media Kind from Podcast to Audiobook. This means that you'll find it under Audiobooks but can change the playback speed). Oddly, on the iPod Touch/iPhone you can change podcast playback speed.

I think you can speed up audiobooks on your ipod classic. I can on mine and it was minted in 2005. But it won't play audiobooks or podcasts at 2x, but something closer to 1.3x I think. But it's still worth it.
Overall I'm a big fan of listening to audiobooks and podcasts faster than real time. I listen to almost all audiobooks and podcasts faster than 1x. I used to use Audacity to speed up the mp3 and re-encode then faster, but now that's not necessary, especially with my ipod touch.

I also listen to all of the podcasts at the same speed. One interesting sideeffect of this is that when I hear people like Leo Laporte (I listen to TWiT) talking at their normal speed I feel like there's something wrong...
As Daniel pointed out the 2x option isn't actually 2x, it's 1.5x. The same result can be achieved with Quicktime under playback options.

How do you do it? When I was writing my reply, I *thought* I could on my latest gen classic and nano but couldn't find the option...
