Tamahome | 7230 comments I was bored with this one plotline in an audiobook (Angel's Game), and hit the 2x speed (the pitch stays the same) until I got to a plotline I liked, and went back to 1x speed. :)

terpkristin | 4407 comments I like the feature, too, but I've found that there are some narrators, especially those with heavy accents, that I really can't do it with! ;)

aldenoneil | 1000 comments I could see doing this for news or something, or like you say, for a book I just want to get through, but I can't see doing it for normal use, with or without heavy accents. There's a charm to taking your time with some things, no?

Steve Davies (one47) | 15 comments I used to watch TV on a homebrew PVR at 1.3x speed, this meant that a 1-hour program with commercials skipped could be watched in about 30 minutes :)

I do use 2x on audiobooks, but usually only to skip any preamble/intro.

Dylan Northrup | 39 comments I wish there was a way to have my iPod play Podcasts at 2x speed. Sadly, I haven't found a way to cajole that option out of my iPod Classic 4g.

Tamahome | 7230 comments Well, you can change podcasts into audiobooks under 'get info' in itunes.

Like Tamahome said, you can fool iTunes to thinking it's an audiobook by changing its info (right-click on it, click "Get Info," go to the "Options" tab, and change Media Kind from Podcast to Audiobook. This means that you'll find it under Audiobooks but can change the playback speed). Oddly, on the iPod Touch/iPhone you can change podcast playback speed.

I think you can speed up audiobooks on your ipod classic. I can on mine and it was minted in 2005. But it won't play audiobooks or podcasts at 2x, but something closer to 1.3x I think. But it's still worth it.

Overall I'm a big fan of listening to audiobooks and podcasts faster than real time. I listen to almost all audiobooks and podcasts faster than 1x. I used to use Audacity to speed up the mp3 and re-encode then faster, but now that's not necessary, especially with my ipod touch.

Alexenko | 3 comments It took a while to get used to the 2x option. But now that I did I cannot listen to the 1x speed because it feels like molasses. I read much faster than the 2x option and so the book feels like it drags on for ever when I don't speed it up.

I also listen to all of the podcasts at the same speed. One interesting sideeffect of this is that when I hear people like Leo Laporte (I listen to TWiT) talking at their normal speed I feel like there's something wrong...

As Daniel pointed out the 2x option isn't actually 2x, it's 1.5x. The same result can be achieved with Quicktime under playback options.

How do you do it? When I was writing my reply, I *thought* I could on my latest gen classic and nano but couldn't find the option...

Jon Cole (joncole) 2x speed is definitely the best way to listen to audiobooks if you're fairly voracious about burning through them. As someone who listens to an obscene amount of podcasts (30+ different shows listed in iTunes), 2x is a total godsend for that as well.

Tamahome | 7230 comments It's how Data would do it.
