That post 2 should have been referred to in the original task. I wasn't aware of it at all. *completely non-plussed* Fortunately I read a lot of fan fic anyway so it isn't a big deal. I'll just select something else I've read this summer instead.

btw I don't see why a book based (other than Twilight) fan fic should be barred. I have a good deal of Deryni Fan-fic that would qualify. Some of it is even published. (no need to reply to that.. just making a comment)

15.7 - "You Must Be The Change You Want To See In The World."
June 7, 1893 marks the date of Gandhi's first act of civil disobedience. In memory of this event...
A.Read a novel that takes place in India OR written by an author who was born in India OR a non-fictional book about the country.
AND
B. Tell us about something you would like to change about the country/state/city where you live and what you have done or would do to see it changed.
A. Midnight's Children, Salman Rushdie.
B. Right now my biggest beef with the city I live in is their bus system. It might seem like a lame thing to concern oneself with, but I don't have a car so I'm dependent on the bus system which is poorly funded. (More specifically the funds are poorly organized.) The preferred method for dealing with lack of funds is to cut buses in some of the more run-down neighborhoods, though in reality its the people living in those neighborhoods who can't afford any other mode of transportation and a lot of their livelihoods are dependent upon the bus. Instead of raising the fare and/or cutting more lines, it seems to me their budget just needs to be reorganized. Especially important considering this is considered a good tourist town. Additionally while the city has made more steps to becoming a more bike-friendly environment, it's still lacking in some of the essentials like actual bike lanes in heavily bike-trafficked areas.

Task 15.7 also requires "and what you have done or would do to see it changed."

You will need to do a new post for this task.

Task 15.4--Learn your numbers

I am #1. So is Rachel Gibson. I read True Confessions.

Task 15.4 requires 2 books:
“B. A novel where a character demonstrates one or more of the characteristics of your number (EXAMPLE: 6's characteristics are...Responsibility, protection, nurturing, community, balance, sympathy...so I could read a book about a police officer or soldier because their duty is to protect.) Include a short explanation of how the character matches the characteristics in your post. A sentence or two would be sufficient.

You will need to do a new post for this task.

Task 30.5 Virtual Block Party
Part A- A book with food in the title, I read Chocolat by Joanne Harris
Part B- A novel with recipes, I read Peach Cobbler Murder by Joanne Fluke

For the block party, I'm going to bring Kielbasa, zucchini and squash. This recipe is fantastic for a summer party, being made with the seasonally fresh veggies (depending on what's available I sometimes throw in tomato chunks and fresh garlic as well). It is very juicy and the flavors blend together nicely for a unique but very yummy taste.

Task 30.5A requires the food in the title to be an ingredient in your contribution.

El PJ, I'm a little confused as I thought my entire explanation for part B was fairly evident. Reorganize the budget for mass transit? Create bike lanes? Not sure how to be more specific than that.

scherzo♫ (pjreads) El wrote: "PJ, I'm a little confused as I thought my entire explanation for part B was fairly evident. Reorganize the budget for mass transit? Create bike lanes? Not sure how to be more specific than that."

It sounds like things some part of the government would do. I read Cynthia's requirement as what we as individuals would do.

I'll accept it since we can't ask Cynthia for clarification.

message 209: by El (new)

El I see. I took it more to mean what one has done already (as an individual) or what one would do (if in position to do so - otherwise why hasn't one done it already?). Some things are really beyond an individual's control but that doesn't mean we wouldn't like to see it changed. I kind of looked back through the Completed Tasks and I've seen a few of each kind of response. Thanks for all your help, PJ (and Sandy, and anyone else helping out right now).

Task 25.5--Favorite Genres

Book 1: My favorite genre is crime/forensic-type books...with police, forensic experts, or medical examiners...I have read Last Known Victim. I really enjoyed this book; it is set in post-Katrina New Orleans.

Book 2: My next favorite genre is mystery-type books with the amateur detectives (housewives, etc.) in them. I have read Tippy Toe Murder for this. It was a fun read about a busy mom who seems to always find herself involved in a mystery/murder of some sort!

Task 25.5 also requires "and an explanation of why you like that genre/type."

You will need to do a new post for this task.

25.5 - Helen's Task - Share the Summer Love
For all us booklovers, summer is a great time of year to relax with our favorite reads. In this task, share your love of your favorites with us. Read two (2) books:

A. One from your favorite genre/type.
B. One from your second favorite genre/type.
C. Write a short review for each and an explanation of why your like that genre/type.

A. My very favorite genre is historical fiction. I read Wolf Hall I loved it an highly recommend it to anyone who likes historical fiction in general and Tudor era in particular. Even though the title is the name of the family estate of the Seymour family, this book really follows the life (nearly to the end) of Thomas Cromwell. I found it very evocative of the time (not that I am that old, haha) and absorbing. I really got lost in it -- and found myself frequently thinking of it during the day when I was not reading it.

B. My second favorite genre is not that different -- I like Tudor history, actual history. I fell in love with this when I was in college, during finals, ironically. I read The Lady in the Tower This is about the fall of Anne Boleyn. Alison Weir (along with Antonia Frasier) is one of my very favorite authors of histories of this time period. She may be the first one I ever read, actually. This was quite good, and she explained in the intro that Anne Boleyn was the woman who got her interested in this time period to begin with. I have read a lot about this (I thought) but this book was a totally different take on it. I do not want to give it away here, but I must say, this book reinforces that supposed "facts" and "History" is all about the teller and the selection of facts he/she chooses to tell. Another great read!

Task 25.5 also requires "and an explanation of why you like that genre/type."

You will need to do a new post for this task.

Task 25.5 Helen's task
Read 2 books
A. Favorite Genre - murder mystery
read Killer Heat by Linda Fairstein. This was classic murder mystery Alexandra Cooper series. Alexandra Cooper is the assistant DA in NY chasing a brutal serial killer.

B. Second favorite Genre - suspense/thriller
listed to Deep Shadow by Randy Wayne White. This book involved three individuals searching for a sunken airplane full of cuban gold. Unfortunately, a cave in occurs during the dive and when Doc Ford makes it to the surface, he discovers two criminals ready to kill him and his friends if they don't recover and give them the gold. Interesting book, a bit long in places.

Task 25.5 also requires "and an explanation of why you like that genre/type."

scherzo♫ (pjreads) ASHLEY FL - post 1778

For 25.5: My two favorite genres are Post-Apocolyptic and Legal Fiction.

For the first, I read One Second After by William R. Forstchen. In this book, a small Carolina town deals with the first year following an EMP. It was interesting, and really really scary (in a: my goodness, this could so easily happen! kind of way). The author clearly had political reasons for writing this book (and the "hero" is so obviously the writer that it is a bit painful), but overall I thought it was interesting and a good read.

For the second, I read The Paper Chase by John Jay Osborn, Jr. I somehow missed reading this when I went to law school. It was an interesting story about a man in his first year at Harvard Law. It actually seems pretty accurate, based on people I know who went to Harvard in the early '90s. My law school was populated with more people who actually loved law, so it wasn't as bleak! It was a good story, but not as good as One L: The Turbulent True Story of a First Year at Harvard Law School.

Task 25.5 also requires "and an explanation of why you like that genre/type."

Sorry to make you re-do this task twice. We just noticed the missing book before and didn't check the other requirements.

25.5 - Helen's Task - Share the Summer Love

A. My favourite genre is historical fiction so I read World Without End by Ken Follett (1000+ pages). I have always had an interest in history and reading historical fiction brings, for me, the events of the past to life. It lends a human aspect to what is normally considered in abstract terms and I love this genre of writing.

B. My second favourite genre is mystery/thriller so I read The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón (500+ pages). I love novels that require me to think. I love guessing what happens next, who did what and why???

Task 25.5 also requires "C. Write a short review for each ..."

You will need to do a new post for this task.

SARAH - post 1825, also post 1868

Looks like this is your first post - welcome to the challenge!

There are already other Sarah's on the readerboard - Sarah CA and Sarah OH. Your profile doesn't show a state, but that's probably the easiest way to keep everyone straight. If you could pick a variation like this and then include it in all your posts, that will help make sure that your posts get credited to you!

Cynthia's rules require that every post include either a link to the book, or both the title and the author of the book. Both 1825 and 1868 include only titles.

You will need to do a new post for these tasks.

30.2 PJ Read's Task - For the Children
A. Read a children's classic and pass it on or recommend it to a child:

Read A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle my all time favorite series - recommended it to my friend's daughter Bianca who I hope will love the series as much as I do.

B. Any book where a child is the main character:

Read The Richest Kids in America by Mark Victor Hansen, a 150 pg book all about kids who have become millionaires putting their ideas to work in the marketplace. Very interesting reading! I am so amazed at what young folks can do when they set their mind to it...

scherzo♫ (pjreads) ALICE IL - post 1232 & 1554 & 1879

5.6. When The Bough Breaks (Alex Delaware, #1)—Jonathon Kellerman
I'm not accepting private detectives for this task because not all detective novels include "spying" on people.

15.1. Something Blue—Giffin, Emily
Task 15.1 is a 2 book task:

"A. OLD - Read an old book (to qualify as an old book it must have been published before you were born).
AND
B. NEW - Read a book written by a new author i.e. a book by an author you haven't read previously.

BORROWED - One of the books above must be borrowed (from the library, from a friend or family member etc.)
BLUE - And the other book must either have a blue cover or the word blue in the title.

(I.E. You need to read an old book that is borrowed and a new book that is blue OR an old book that is blue and a new book that is borrowed.)"
30.5. Poor Girl Gourmet—McCoy, Amy and The Complete Idiot's Guide to Eating Clean—Welland, Diane
Task 30.5 requires "Include your contribution to the party in your post, and let us know what makes your recipe stand out."

20.9. Don’t let the Pigeon Drive the Bus-- Wilems, Mo and (500) Days of Summer
20 point tasks require 100 pgs -- read more than one book from the list if necessary

20.10. The Book Thief—Zusak, Markus
Task 20.10 requires that you post a comment in the Group Reads discussion thread.

* 5.10 is 500+ pages, so I am claiming a big book ticket.
*15.5 (task 1) is 500+ pages, so I am claiming a big book ticket.
*15.5 (task 2) is 500+ pages, so I am claiming a big book ticket
*20.10 is 500+ pages, so I am claiming a big book ticket
You can only get 3 Big Book tickets: One each for 500+ pp, 750+ pp and 1000+ pp.

You will need to do a new post for tasks 5.6, 15.1, 20.9, 20.10, & 30.5.
Reposts need to include all task requirements: previously posted items plus previously omitted items.

Note: "25.5. Center Field-- Lipsyte, Robert
*The song is Centerfield by John Fogerty. The connection to the book is that it’s about a player who really wants to play but has obstacles that stand in his way. It reminds me of summer because I LOVE BASEBALL and this song always gets me excited about the season."

I counted this as 25.6 since it fits that one not 25.5

PLEASE separate NEW tasks from previously posted tasks.

15.9 - “He Who Knows Others Is Wise. He Who Knows Himself Is Enlightened.”

A Short History of Women, Kate Walbert

(Ok this one is a bit of a stretch but I did work on a lot of feminist history in school, so while the title isn't as clear on that the book itself is about the legacy of feminism across generations which definitely reflects my life and interests.)

There are several female characters in the novel, but the character I related to most was Dorthy (#2 there are 4). I most related to her struggle with living up to her mother's feminist standards and her own feelings of insecurity related to her own choices.

Reading through Cynthia's responses in the 15.9 TASK HELP thread, I don't think she would accept this book for this task. She wants a character type in the title.

You will need to do a new post for this task.

In Post 42 in the Help Thread for the task, this was clarified:

If you are going to do A an ingredient needs to be in the title- if there are oranges or fruit in the salad, then it will work. If not, then other options for A could be
Pasta Imperfect: A Passport to Peril Mystery or The Sunday Macaroni Club: A Novel

A number of the tasks have been further explained or clarified in the help threads, and that's what we have to go on when looking at whether the book fits the requirements of the creator of the task.

Cynthia's rules require that you either post a link to your books, or include both the title and author.

You will need to do a new post for this task.
Reposts need to include all task requirements: previously posted requirements plus previously omitted requirements.

I have an issue with this. A lot of us don't have the time to read every post in all the help threads. I only go into a help thread if I need help or clarification for a task. If there is a clarification, it should be added into the original task post. I understand that this time that is not possible because of Cynthia's absence, but it is not fair to expect us to read every post in every help thread.

Rebecca NJ (njreader) | 1281 comments I agree with Beth and even posted something in the suggestions thread earlier today that it would be helpful if the creator of the task could possibly have the first posting spot or two for those clarifications/approved books. I personally don't read through all the task help posts and usually follow the ones that I'm stuck looking for a book or looking for suggestions.
