What percentage of the books that you read in a year are sf or fantasy
Interesting idea, Jeffery. I've read about 55 books with 18 of them being fantasy, so roughly 1/3. I realized that the first quarter, I read a lot of SF & mysteries. It's only in the second quarter that I started reading a lot of fantasy.
95% of the books I read are SF/F. When I have time to read for pleasure it is always SF/F. It's been this way for virtually my entire life.
I would say probably a good 70-80% of what I read is fantasy. With all the subgenres that already exist and more popping up, it definitely makes it easy to stay entirely in the realm of fantasy if that’s what someone wanted to do. I bounce around a bit, taking a look at whatever happens to catch my eye or is recommended to me by a friend. But what I gravitate towards most often happens to fall in the category of fantasy.
I guess a corallory to same is what percentage of books you actually buy are sf fantasy. I really do not buy anything out of the genre as almost everything else I can get at the library.
Jon wrote: "Ditto Jeff. :)"I think there are people in this group, Beyond Realty and sf/fan that are different so I posted in all three.
So far this year about 1/3 of what I've read has been fantasy/scifi. I think that is probably somewhere close to a long term average as well.
Probably 90% is usually fantasy or sci-fi, or on the border of those genres. This year has been a little different though because I've started to read more non-fiction.
Fantasy always takes first place for me, and I probably do read it even more now that there's more UF, LOL.
20%. I read mostly romance, about 80%. I love urban fantasy, so most of the 20% is actually in that category. There is also some young adult in there, as well.
Recently fantasy's pretty much all I've been reading, but hopefully going to move on to some of my 'to-read' fiction books in the next couple months, try and balance it out some!
LOL Mike! For me I need it or I get burnt out. I didn't read any fantasy at all from ~2000 until 2009 because I'd gorged on it for years before that and it had all blurred together into this big "sameness". Just starting to get my feet wet again.
I love GOOD fantasy (of course that's "good" from my point of view [LOL:]). I can remember when it wasn't that easy to find much science fiction and fantasy was even more scarce. By the late 60s and 70s that was turning around...now there is a glut of fantasy and some book stores are actually cutting back on their Science Fiction/Fantasy sections. I don't read fantasy to the exclusion of other genres (despite my "quip")...but but do read it most among my fiction reading. Seek balance in life, if that entails reading a "mix" of things go with your taste... Just don't lose the ability to laugh, especially at yourself (and of course, me) :).
I rotation read mostly fantasy and scifi, but I also like romance, especially historical. The genre that I would like to read more of international intrigue.
A normal year I would say I read about 90% fantasy, but this years been a litte strange so I would say about 60% of what I've read has been fantasy, but I'm trying now to get it back up. :) I mostly read fantasy becuase its what I like the most, I have tried Sci-fi but I have to struggle with finding them interesting most of the time. I have recently got a soft spot for some paranormal though so I can jump to there now and again.
I'm easily in Jeff's category. Any pleasure reading I do is almost entirely Fantasy (not even sci fi, just fantasy!). :)Sooo.. 95% at least!
Eeks... probably 75%. I'm way off balanced. That's ok though... I read to relax and dream. I do make sure to throw a missed classic in from time to time and enjoy them when I do. +1 to Sarah's recommendation on Jacqueline Carey's Kushiel series, if you like erotic fantasy.
Let me check my stats...On 2011 [months january- August 8th], including my current reading - A GAME OF THRONES - which is a fantasy - I have read.
so, out of 76 books I have read this year, 30 (+1) of them are fantasy.
That makes 41%. Not the biggest fan of fantasy, but definately a fan :)
Ive read 3 books so far this year thats under the category of fantasy/ sci fi. some are adult and some are also YA. so id say its around 99% thats fantasy / sci fi
41/61 so far this year so 67%, but I think this is probably a lower percentage than in recent years - I've built up a collection of fiction books, most of which I've never read, that I'm trying to get through.
100% fantasy...from the perspective of both a writer and a reader...it is simply the most beautiful, inspiring genre one can delve into...
I read about half sff and about half mystery/thriller. I do occasionally pick up something that doesn't fit either of those categories, but usually only if it's highly recommended (or a bargain in one of the Kindle sales!).
Probably about 75 percent fantasy/sf, including YA and children's books in that genre. About 50 percent of my reading is children's (given that I am a children's librarian). The other 25 percent is picture books, nonfic, and other genre stuff. I'm reading more than usual out of genre because I'm in a group of staff this year reading through kids 2011 books.
I haven't checked, but I think it is about 60% fantasy, 20% historical fiction, 15% thrillers/action and 5% literary. No SF for me. I'm one of those strictly fantasy types. And I'm picky about my fantasy as well. I usually don't like urban, steampunk, alternate history etc.
Hmmm. I've read 80 books this year and according to the 'pie' in my stats, it's quite a chunk. My reading taste is very wide, but for the last couple of years, or since I joined GR, I've read mostly fantasy and scifi. I listen to a lot of audio books, and most of those are mystery.I'm like Mike tho. In the past when I was in high school or post high school, there wasn't that much fantasy. There was a lot more scifi, and I read that whenever. But I also read mystery, historical, literary, and everything else.
However, I've found that just because a book is a genre I like doesn't mean I will enjoy it. I just listened to a mystery that was more like a Lifetime movie than a mystery. And like a Lifetime movie, once begun it had to be finished, lol. But I was rolling my eyes through most of it. There's a lot of fantasy crap and historical crap and even literary crap out there. So I mostly stick to authors I've enjoyed in the past, rather than genres.
I've read 84 books so far & about 20% are fantasy with another 20% being paranormal-urban & about 10% Sword & Sorcery, as I shelve them. Some folks might consider all those as fitting into fantasy. Somehow, I just can't see putting Queen Betsy on the same shelf as Bilbo or Conan, though.;-)
About 80% of the books I've read this year are in the fantasy category. I just keep coming back to them for reasons I can't fully understand.
i think 100% of my books so far are sf/fantasy, the odd horror. I dont have any interest at the moment than reading sf/fantasy.
So far, of the books I've read this year, 60% would be fantasy (and I include UF, paranormal etc.) a good 10-15% are romance and then the rest are from a number of genres.I have to take a break from fantasy to be honest or I'd go mad. It can be daunting to pick up another 600 page book and delve into a new world complete with a new magic system.
I would have guessed 75-80% fantasy. I was really surprised to see it's actually dead on 50%. Whoa. I know I've been reading a few Christian biographies, but the rest...? Collection of random things. That clearly haven't stuck in my head much.
I read about 60 percent fantasy I think. I never really kept track though so i'm not sure. fantasy and horror are my favorite though.
About 40% of the books I've read this year are fantasy. The other books are a mix of nonfiction, mysteries, and classics.
Hrm, interesting question that I have never really paid much attention to. I would say that at least upwards of 60% of the books are fantasy(I include paranormal in this too). It is my favorite genre and what I tend to read the most though I really can't stand urban fantasy. After that it would be thriller/mysteries followed by a spattering of fiction and non-fiction. Sci-fi not so much unless it is recommended to me.
As a fantasy author, I spend most of my time reading other fantasy, just to keep up with the field. I also do some screening for a publisher friend, reading their submission slush pile - all fantasy. So I'd have to say that of the 500 or so manuscripts and books I read last year, 96% were fantasy. The remainder was evenly split between sci-fi and non-fiction. (Although, for many of those slush pile books, I only read a chapter or two.)
About half. The other half can be anything--fiction, non-fiction, some historical stuff. But fantasy/SF is what I keep returning to.
More than half of my read books is fantasy. Great deal takes historical fiction, and just a little what is left are other books. I'm definitely fantasy fan =)

Do you find that almost all of the books that you read presently are sf or fantasy?
Has the rise of subgenres like urban fantasy, steampunk, sf mysteries or cyberpunk made it easier to just read in this genre or do you bounce around and just read whatever you see that is good but firstly check out the books in sf and fantasy.
