Angela (angbens) Currently reading Possess Me at Midnight (Doomsday Brethren, #3) by Shayla Black

message 252: by Sera (new)

Sera oooh, Angela - nice cover.

I'm getting ready to read Austen's Persuasion. I read Summer by Edith Wharton last week, and it was very good.

message 253: by Shea (new)

Shea | 346 comments Sera,
I loved Persuasion (as I love all Austen) but Pride & Prejudice is still my favorite.

message 254: by Sera (new)

Sera Shea, I'm really excited to read it, and yes, P&P is my favorite Austen so far, too.

message 255: by Angela (new)

message 256: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (avery123) I just started Nineteen Minutes

message 257: by L & D (new)

L & D Tender is the Night by F Scott Fitzgerald.

message 258: by Shea (new)

Shea | 346 comments Jenny, I really liked "Nineteen Minutes" but so far my favorite Picoult novel is "Plain Truth." My best friend's favorite is "My Sister's Keeper" but I haven't brought myself to read that one yet.

message 259: by Shea (new)

Shea | 346 comments Lansing, the only thing I have read by Fitzgerald is "The Great Gatsby" and that was in high school. I think I should reread it as a more mature person. Please let us know what you think of "Tender is the Night."

I am currently reading "Vanity Fair" by Thackeray. I gotta keep plugging along on my classics :-)

message 260: by L & D (new)

L & D Sure thing Shea. I finished This Side of Paradise recently and really enjoyed it. I read The Great Gatsby for a course in Modern American Literature, and I don't think I would have fully appreciated it in hisgh school. You should reread it!

message 261: by Shay (new)

Shay | 11 comments I read multiple books at the same time. For my "real" literature, I'm reading Sense and Sensibility. I also usually read a mystery, The Spy, and a cozy, Death Takes the Cake. I also read a science fiction/fantasy, Demon Hunts and a non-fiction Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim. I also have two unfinished books that I'm chugging along on, Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal and Frankenstein. I've had as many as 8 or 9 all going at once.

message 262: by Debra (new)

Debra (debrapurdykong) I'm taking a short break from mysteries to read a historical romance called Dark Rider. I'm about 70 pages into it, but it's pretty good so far. Lots of action.

Dark Rider by Kathrynn Dennis

message 263: by Shea (new)

Shea | 346 comments Shay, I applaud your ability to read so many things at once. I cannot keep that many straight. Debra, I added your book to my to read book because when I need something light I head straight for historical romance.

Let me know what you think of it. I don't usually read historical romance so I'm not sure how it compares to others.

Debra

message 265: by Sera (new)

Sera Shay, I usually have 3 or 4 books going, but 8 or 9 - kudos to you!

I finished Persuasion and I found it to be typical Austen so no real surprises there. For those of you who enjoy a good thriller/suspense novel, I am completely engaged in A Person of Interest by Theresa Schwegel. Although I'm listening to it on audio, I'm really enjoying the "writing" if that makes sense. Plus, it's not some action-packed drama, but more of a character study of a dysfunctional family with an underlying police case that needs to be solved. I highly recommend it to those of who are interested in the genre.

I'm also reading Nicholas and Alexandra by Robert Massie. I just love the Romanovs, and I can't believe that this one escaped my attention. It's non-fiction that reads like fiction.

message 266: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sarahpinneo) I just finished Intelligence by Susan Hasler, and I highly recommend it. The book is so funny, I'm a little in awe that it's a first novel.

I also just read War by S. Junger (he's the Perfect Storm guy). I really, really, really don't usually read books like that-- about the conflict in Afghanistan, etc. But this one was really special. It's not about politics, it's about the mindset of the soldiers who are posted in that violent place.

Next up for me is the new Carl Hiaasen.

Haven't been around for a little while guys, sorry.
I am currently reading several books. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling, The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien, White Oleander by Janet Fitch, The Vampire Lestat by Anne Rice, Tempted by P.C. & Kristin Cast, Brothers in Arms by Margaret Weis & Don Perrin, One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Incubus Dreams by Laurell K. Hamilton and The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold. I am reading way too many books at one time!

message 268: by Shay (new)

Shay | 11 comments I just finished War and Peace.

message 269: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sarahpinneo) I am just loving Blessing of a B- by Wendy Mogel. Usually I'll cross the street to avoid reading a parenting book. But this one is outstanding.

Wow! Impressive. How did you like it? It is on my "to read someday" list. I suppose I could do it as a classic for 2011 but I am not sure I am that motivated yet.

Half of the book was mind numbing boredom and it has one of the worst endings to a book ever. It's one of those classics that's a classic by virtue of influence on the development of the novel.

If he had hacked about 500 or so pages off of his "ramblings" and ranting, then it would have been a better book.

message 275: by Tammi (new)

Tammi (tamvan) | 3 comments I just finished "Room" by Emma Donoghue and then started "her fearful symmetary" by Audrey Niffenegger. This book caught my attention because she also wrote the "The Time traveler's wife", which I loved!

message 276: by Taylor (new)

Taylor | 3 comments LOLA, CALIFORNIA by Edie Meidav! The perfect book for a mom raising two wonderful teenage girls. The novel reminds me of what it's like to be in their shoes. Meidav--a mother herself, I have no doubt--also validates the difficulties of motherhood, showing how trying and even paradoxical our roles are.

As of now, Meidav's my new favorite author.

message 277: by Taylor (new)

Taylor | 3 comments In the spirit of our age, here for your viewing pleasure is a movie trailer for the novel I suggested a few days ago -- Edie Meidav's Lola, California: A Novel. The movie was made by director Rebecca Dreyfus, and has music composed by Kevin Salem (former member of Dumptruck); Meidav narrates, in a sense:

message 278: by L & D (new)

L & D I just finished Forsaken (Fall of Angels) by Taylor. It was good. I am now reading The Paris Wife. It is about Hemmingway's wife. It is very good, and I am not a huge fan of historical fiction.

message 279: by Taylor (new)

Taylor | 3 comments A wonderful novel with a strong mothering theme is Edie Meidav's Lola, California: A Novel; read an excerpt from it on the Sundance Channel, a worthy website for this new inspirational book:

HI Everyone...I can't believe how big the group has become. There were only 8 when I became too busy to log on...lol. I'm reading what I like to call brain candy...Lee Child Jack Reacher novels. Late nights with babies makes for tired days. Hope you're all well.

message 281: by Shea (new)

Shea | 346 comments Santina! It is so good to "see" you again. The group has been kind of dormant lately. I am currently reading:
Vanity Fair, A Secret Alchemy, and The Windwalker (which was written by a friend of mine).

Debra (debrapurdykong) Hi everyone, I'm currently reading Dead Light District by Jill Edmondson. It's a humorous PI novel set in Toronto.

Yvonne | 10 comments Book: The Broken Gift

"This is certainly an eye-opener of a book. For anyone who might be concerned, how can attempting to answer some of the major questions of the Bible be considered anti-Christian? This will give the reader quite a mental workout, and it is very much recommended. "

I finished this not too long ago. I also liked it. I had seen the movie first so I was not in as much suspense as I would have liked.

I liked it, as did the other ladies in my Pages & Popcorn group. We read books and then get together for potluck and to watch the movie.

The Unaccompanied Tour by Laura Monagan

"…a little spooky, a little unnerving, in the best way possible!"

"The big achievement of The Unaccompanied Tour is protagonist Evelyn Tucker…She starts out a by-the-book ruler follower and by the end is a bona fide felon."

The Unaccompanied Tour is reviewed in the current issue of Mothers Always Write online literary magazine for moms.
