My daughter is trying to locate a childrens' book we had when she was little. It was about a clever little monkey who finds a knife and shaves his face with it. He is funny looking after that and so he hides out. He uses the knife to skin a fish and eat it and has some other adventures with food, one of the foods is coffee. It had wonderful illustrations.

Is it The Monkey's Whiskers: A Brazilian Folktale by Anne Rockwell? Here's a description I found on a blog: "The Monkey's Whiskers is a folk tale about a naughty little monkey who loses his whiskers and makes the barber give him his barber's knife when they cannot be re-attached. He then makes bad deals with other characters in the book that all result in an unwanted end for the monkey. It is a most unusual folk tale with a moral."
