*book*lover* I am re-reading Needful Things by Stephen King.

message 1302: by Dustin (new)

Dustin Enders Game series is fantastic. My opinion - start with Ender's Game then proceed thru the Ender's series which starts with Speaker for the Dead. When you finish the Ender's series then start the 'Bean' series which begins where Ender's game finished. First book of the 'Bean' series is Ender's Shadow.
I promise you will not be disappointed.

Hi, Staci-
Thank you, I appreciate your input!
I've also read the first book in the Enders series, which I found "pretty good," but not great. It didn't feel very real to me. Perhaps a re-read would do me some good? What are your thoughts?

I am re-reading Needful Things by Stephen King.

Hi, Chelsey!

Needful Things is a favorite of mine.:) How's it coming along, so far?

Maybe it would help to start the 'Bean' series instead of Enders. This series starts right where Ender's Game left off. Then move on with the other series. They all tie in together; Enders series begins in the future long after the Bugger war so for some it does not feel real like you said. The Bean series will put it into perspective. Hope that helps.

Rachel | 701 comments Finished The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, good but not great. I think I'm going to start The Help tonight.

message 1306: by Dustin (new)

Dustin Oh, really, Staci? Thank you for the suggestion.:)

message 1307: by Dani (new)

Dani Landry (danilandry) I was on vacation last week and had time to read lots! Finished up The Princess Bride, read The Graduate, The Road and Robopocalypse and started Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. I didn't want to take anything with me that was too long/heavy. My favorite of all of these was The Road.

message 1308: by Dani (new)

Dani Landry (danilandry) Bondama wrote: ""Interview with a Vampire" is the ONLY book Anne Rice ever wrote in her entire life that's worth the ink it cost to print the pages."

Anne Rice's witch books were by far better than the vampire chronicles - although i loved those too.

message 1309: by Tracy (new)

Tracy Just finished The Running Man by Stephen King and I loved it!

Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 219 comments Just to add my two cent into the Bean books, the series to me is more political than anything else, while the Ender books are questing one's morals.

Kit★ (xkittyxlzt) | 612 comments All this talk of OSC I think made me want to read something by him, and so I'm starting Pathfinder Pathfinder (Serpent World, #1) by Orson Scott Card .

Grant Spendlove | 93 comments All right, I've taken the plunge. I finished the revised "Gunslinger," and started on "Drawing of the Three." This time, I'm not going to wimp out. I'm going to finish all the Dark Tower books.

And this time, I mean it. Nothing's going to divert my....OOOOOOO, look! A butterfly!

I had the same problem. I read The Gunslinger back in the late 80's and did not continue the series. Last year, after much persuasion from people here on GR, I picked it back up. Once I got into Drawing of the Three the story sucked me in and I read the whole series. You're through the worst one IMO. Now enjoy the rest of them.

message 1314: by Susanna (new)

Susanna (jb_slasher) Well, Ender's Game was AWESOME. The few scifi novels I've read this year have been excellent!

Back to Uncle Stephen, then. I'm picking up Carrie . My first King, it's been 14 years.

Hi, Dani!
Are you referring to The Road, by Cormack Macarthy?

Just finished The Running Man by Stephen King and I loved it!

Tracy- I'm very happy for you.:) I know you've been really wanting to read The Running Man for quite some time. It's truly awesome, isn't it?
You should DEFINITELY try the other Bachman books now!

Just to add my two cent into the Bean books, the series to me is more political than anything else, while the Ender books are questing one's morals.

Thank you for your input, Kevin, it's much appreciated.

Way to go, Grant! That's a great attitude.
After you're done with DT, I think you'll find that it's very, very worth the time and effort.

Happy reading, everyone!!

message 1316: by Jeremy (new)

Jeremy (zodac) | 1 comments Nearing the end of what's been a very long, but very awesome, run through of the Dark Tower series and all its related/connected books. I'm just about done with Wolves of the Calla, which I'm trying to finish before I head off to the UK in a couple of days. I'll probably tank through Song of Susannah on the plane.

Grant Spendlove | 93 comments Tracy wrote: "Just finished The Running Man by Stephen King and I loved it!"

Funny thing about The Running Man....it gets better every time I read it. I see more in that story. I can just about smell the desperation of Harding and New York. I'm inside that pipe and that trunk with Richards. I feel his outrage at the doctoring of his wife's picture and at the Government's Games distraction.

message 1318: by Milan (new)

Yep, I was referring to McCarthy. It was brilliant!

message 1322: by Dustin (new)

Dustin Yes, it is, Dani! I've read The Road twice, the first time for pleasure, the other for an English Lit course.:)

Have you read any of his other stuff?

message 1323: by Dani (new)

Dani Landry (danilandry) Actually, no. If you have and can recommend what I should pick up next that would be wonderful!

message 1324: by Dustin (last edited Jul 15, 2011 01:57PM) (new)

Dustin I've read the following, and I highly recommend them all:

No Country for Old Men
Blood Meridian
The Boder Trilogy (All The Pretty Horses, Cities Of The Plain, and The Crossing.)

Thanks a bunch . . . thank goodness I haven't seen 'No Country for Old Men' so that won't ruin the book for me!

message 1326: by Dustin (new)

Dustin You are welcome.:) I'm happy to help.
And I'm glad you haven't seen No Country yet, either. The film follows the book quite closely.

I noticed in another member's reply that you read Robopocalypse. It's on my to read list - what are your thoughts? Is it worth the purchase?

message 1329: by Rachel (new)

Staci Johnson | 102 comments Kevin wrote: "Just to add my two cent into the Bean books, the series to me is more political than anything else, while the Ender books are questing one's morals."

I enjoyed both series equally. I'm finishing the Bean series and I've found myself looking up the boundaries of the countries mentioned in the book. I've never strayed too much from my love of sci-fi and the horror genre but since this political story line ties into the sci-fi, I love it. I still feel it's better to read the Enders' series first then Bean. He has another Enders novel that is supposed to be released late this year.

Staci Johnson | 102 comments BTW - I know this is SK book group and should probable refer my posts to his books but...I'm new to the group and missed out on the the July read. Now I'm just biding my time and waiting for the August group read to start.
I hope no one minds my input on OSC or other authors. I just love to talk about books with others. Thanks

Let me know what you think of that one! I have it on my wishlist, possibly to read in another group if it wins the poll, but I still want it even if it doesn't. I watched the book trailer for it on youtube, as well as the little "making of the trailer" documentary, and it looked super interesting. I sort of can't wait until I can get it.

I've got that one on my wishlist too! Lol, funny OSC's sort of all over this thread at the moment. He's one of my favorite authors after SK. :)

Bondama (kerensa) | 868 comments I'm not quite through with The Lost Gate
but I can already tell you, it's just flat out amazing - an entirely new theory about gods and goddesses and their relation to humanity. I love OSC because his writing is so immediately accessible.

Pathfinder, don't know why, but once I started reading the first page, I was into it. I'm happy I got it. Really glad to hear The Lost Gate is good too, I'll have to move it ahead a few spots on the ol' wishlist. :)

I really liked Robopocalypse, actually. Devoured it in just a few days. Def worth the purchase, but I have an e-reader, thank God! ;)
