Lisa S (kasey_k_fan) Just found something really neat and wondered if you all knew about it?

If you go to your profile and look at the bottom of where it lists your shelves, you'll see STATS. If you click on that, it will tell you how many books you've read each year since joining Goodreads and it also has an option for number of pages read!

Very cool!

I'm at 34,803 pages

Dee (austhokie) | 776 comments Mod
apparently I read lots, since i'm at 28,000 for the year...

message 3: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (wanna_read_all_the_books) That is really cool, thanks for sharing. I never go to my own profile so I would never have noticed it otherwise.

message 4: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristicoleman) I'm at 16346 pages! Love this feature! I'm the slacker of the group so far...lol.

message 5: by Grace (new)

Grace (gdaminato) | 74 comments Of course, all this assumes that you consistently record your books in goodreads.

message 6: by Ann aka Iftcan (new)

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) | 394 comments and it also assumes that you haven't been "filling in the blanks" as you find more and more and more books that you've already read but hadn't listed yet.

I have been going in and adding to my lists not only as I read but also as I find books that I'd previously read but didn't remember titles for.

message 7: by Ann aka Iftcan (new)

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) | 394 comments Well, I just went over to check out MY stats--and its showing that I've only read 4 books this year and a total of NINE books since I joined. Since I have over 3k books so far, that strikes me as being just a tad off. :o)

message 8: by Lisa S (new)

Lisa S (kasey_k_fan) LOL Ann, it sounds like it. I think there may be some I forgot to record because it says I've only read 101 this year and I know I'm on 106 now.

message 9: by Ann aka Iftcan (last edited Jul 10, 2010 06:29PM) (new)

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) | 394 comments oohhh, maybe that's it Michelle

the problem is--I don't remember when I read a lot of mine. :o) And frankly, with over 3k--I don't plan on going back to put the dates in now either. But I'll think about doing that from now on.

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) | 158 comments It says 118 books and 39,746 pages. Since I have 116 books listed here, it is possible that I forgot to list two books here. And yes, I use the date read feature each time I list a book. After the initial hundred or so books when I first signed up, I did not go back and add books that I've read to try to 'fill in the blanks'. I've only been adding books as I've read them. I don't think I could go back and list everything I've read. At least I know I wouldn't want to. Let's see, I read a couple hundred books a year. I've been doing that for about thirty years now.

Maybe something else that may be throwing off the numbers is books added to TBR status? I think I have six books listed in my TBR as I tagged them while in a discussion about something and wanted to remember them. I have no desire to list all the books I plan on reading. Heck, I have maybe 300-400 unread books in my bedroom alone that I don't want to go through and enter into the system.

None the less, it is a cool feature and thank you for pointing it out Lisa.

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) | 394 comments lol, a couple hundred for 30 years? Jim you're just a baby, aren't you? I've been reading that many books since I turned 8 and learned to read. Yes, I was a "late bloomer" but that was because I wasn't able to see until then. I STILL remember the day I got my very first pair of glasses and that suddenly people had FACES, trees had branches and leaves, there were actually animals out there that were further away than 10 feet. . . Oh--and my very first pair of glasses? Bifocals at 8.

I have a good memory for plots and characters--even if I have a horrible time with names. :o) So I've been adding the books as I come across someone else talking them. I've also put in a few "what's the name of that book" requests.

Ann, I'm 41. If my mother is to be believed, I've been reading since I was five. I know by the time I was 12 I was reading a book every couple of days. So I picked 30 years as a ballpark figure. I've had my slow years where I only read a 100 books and some not so slow years. I remember a period when my college requested I take some time off from attending their fine institution (I was suspended for a year) I averaged 2200 pages a week.

I can't imagine not being able to see clearly. I work as a photographer and vision is VERY important to me.

My son's vision is 20/1200 and we couldn't get his prescriptions adjusted until he was about 4. I remember the first good pair of glasses we got. He told me, "Wow, mommy, so that's what you look like." I just cried, right in the doctor's office.

message 15: by Ann aka Iftcan (new)

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) | 394 comments yep, 41 is a baby Jim. At least according to my Gran. But then again--she sat the age for "baby" at 62. :o) And child was 82. (She was 102 at the time.) You are younger than I am by well over a decade. :o)

And part of why I hadn't gotten glasses before was my mouth. I have horrible teeth (soft, brittle) and when I was 5 I started having problems with absesses in them. It wasn't til I was 8 after almost 2.5 years on massive doses of antibiotics that the dentist was finally able to get everything cleared up. Until then, every eye dr. that my parents took me to told them the same thing, "The vision problems and headaches are caused by her dental problems. Once those are cured she'll be fine." Um, yeah, not so much. I STILL couldn't see and still had the headaches (which, btw, I STILL have--seems even then I was having migraines.) So Mum took me to yet a different eye dr. And this one just had screaming fits at Mum. When she was finally able to get a word in, she pulled all my records out of her purse and showed him that she'd been taking me in--on average about every 6 months or so--and what the dr's had all said. There were a few dr's who got nasty grams put into their files because of that.

lol, the funny thing is--my eye sight is slowly getting better. According to my current eye dr, if it continues at the current rate, I'll have 20/20 vision about the time I hit 279 or so. Of course, that's if there are no OTHER problems (you know, cataracts, detached retinas etc.)

If you make it to 279, you are far less human than I thought. :)

Sorry that you get headaches but glad that the eyes are improving.

Andrea | 56 comments Shay, your story about your son actually touch my heart. I'm glad that he can see you better now.

message 18: by Ann aka Iftcan (new)

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) | 394 comments The one thing I still carry from my "not being able to see" time (in addition to the memory of the first day I got glasses) is that I STILL tend to place more value on how someone sounds than on how they look. I had to depend on my ears until I got that first pair of glasses to identify people. And, well, as a result, if someone has a voice that I don't like, it doesn't matter WHAT they look like, they'll never get a "hot/sexy" vote from me.

message 19: by Gina (new)

Gina (ginrobi) | 84 comments Thanks for mentioning this, Lisa. I'd have never noticed.

I was a little miffed, though, LOL! I only became a Goodreads member in 2008, but while I pondered my stats, it hit me: when I started adding books, I had put down dates of when I read them. So, now that it's been giving me stats back from 2005, it made sense, LOL!

I can say that the stats are off, though, so I'm going to have to look into this. I've been keeping track of the number of books and the number of pages I've read since 2007. The total I have, so far, for this year, is 25,746 pages, and that's going with the page count directly from Goodreads. However, the stat says only 23,071, so it's not right.

Has anyone else noticed this? Do your stats match your personal count?

message 20: by Afsana (new)

Afsana (afsanaz) if its less maybe there are a few books that you have forgotten to add as read on GR

there were a few that I rated and reviewed that still said to read. which i thought was odd as usually when you rate it it normally goes to read. Things like that

message 21: by Jennifer C (new)

Jennifer C It could also be that the version you read may have had a different page count than the version that you listed on good reads. I noticed that with Drums of Autumn - Goodreads said 880 pages but the version I read had 1070.

message 22: by Lisa S (new)

Lisa S (kasey_k_fan) Yes Gina, my count is off also.

When you add a book to your list, do you make sure that you pick the same edition as the one you read? If you choose a different edition, your total may not agree with the total in stats. For example, you might select the hardcover edition of a book (350 pages), but the book you read was actually a mass market paperback edition (420 pages).

The same applies if you're looking at the page count in Goodreads. Are you looking at the same edition that you linked to when you added the book to your list?

message 24: by Gina (new)

Gina (ginrobi) | 84 comments Great points, Afsana, Jennifer and Grace. I double checked all the books - they are listed as "Read". Also, when I write in my planner the books I've completed, and the page count, I take the page count right off of goodreads, so they should match, no matter what. Also, when I make sure that I have the right edition, I double-check the page count and the book info. As a Goodreads Librarian, when I find mistakes, I change them, and I've had to change a few page counts. Example: when checking out four book sites (Chapters, both Amazons and B&N), their page counts say one thing and Goodreads says another. I change the Goodreads page count for that specific edition to match everywhere else.

Therefore, this is where my dilemma lies. If the page count is the same everywhere, and I use the page count off Goodreads when I write them down in my planner, why do the stats not match my planner? Weird, n'est-ce pas?

message 25: by Jennifer C (new)

Jennifer C oui, very weird! What a bummer that it doesn't match. :(

message 26: by Gina (new)

Gina (ginrobi) | 84 comments LOL, tell me about it. I stopped looking at it, LOL!

message 27: by Susan (new)

Susan (superbookfreak) | 115 comments That is very cool. I found out that I read like 90,000 pages in 2010

message 28: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (vanessakaleidoscope) | 4 comments 3067343 You can also find it on the top of your "my books" tab. My stats, however, are so badly skewed ... but that is because I have only put in books I read on my own leisure time + I enjoyed + I REMEMBER reading!

There are so many more books, both fiction and non-fiction, that I have read over the last decade or so, but I am too lazy to try to research and include Every Single One of Them.

However, this year I look forward to seeing how that number will change, as I am diligently recording my progress, and ALL the books I am reading.

message 29: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo I've only been on goodreads for alittle more than 1 year. I'm only added books before that I read when I saw one that I remembered reading so I know mine isn't uptodate. I've only started my written book journals around april of 97 which was sometime after I even started coming online in book chat rooms of AOL. Then I went to the message boards for books in AOL. I only switched over here when AOL was changing and deleting alot of our message boards. Anything read before the time I started the journals it's hit or miss what I remember reading. And it was probably double the amount of books I read now. I remember my father coming in and yelling at me to turn off the light and go to sleep or I wouldn't be able to get up for work the next day. Funny that growing up when younger I wasn't into reading. Or if I was it's for what I wanted to read not what I had to read. Hated book reports. anyway, I'm at 28 books for the year so far and blame being online too much because I thought I would have finished more than that so far. okay get offline so you can get back to reading which I have been doing most of the day so far.
