I'm not sure if this is a part of a short story or a novel. A few years ago, a friend of mine read a passage aloud about traveling up in a hot air balloon and passing through a layer in the atmosphere where all the sounds from the day before had gone to. I think there was mention of passing through that layer and then reaching silence. I incorrectly thought that this was a passage in The Unbearable Lightness of Being, but having just read it, there was nothing like that in there. It may have been something else by Kundera, or something by Italo Calvino, or something completely different.

Could it possibly be Sexing the Cherry by Jeanette Winterson? I remember a passage about workers having to clean the sky from the words and sounds of each day, and they described going up there (possibly in a balloon) and having their tools. It was very descriptive, and different moods and sounds created different residue.

I've just started reading Sexing the Cherry, and I believe that this is it! Thanks Erin! I'll be reading The Raw Shark Texts too, just because it looks interesting!
