I don't know. You need some sort of review, but I can't believe the huge swath of dumbass paperwork associated with some annual reviews. I get the feeling they're for legal protection, but I also see some supervisors unwilling to be honest on reviews, and then a paper trail that says a bad employee is good causes problem.
What do you think? Annual reviews? Good or waste of time? Alternatives?
in my experience annual reviews are not taken too seriously by anyone. they sometimes get scheduled and then rescheduled and then the person doing them acts like it is a huge inconvenience and they just want to get them done which to me trivializes their importance. if it is just a rote activity i think they should be eliminated. if someone really is going to take the time to thoughtfully execute the review and then also with the idea of using it to somehow better things (even if that means sacking someone) then i think they are a good idea. as it stands with the ones i have been a part of, busy work
some days I pray for performance reviews that might clear out some of the dead wood in the Post Office! As it stands, the union pretty much runs the show. I work with a guy who was fired twice and got his job back both times. Last year, a co-worker got in trouble for sexual harassment of a customer. BTW, he was a totally creepy guy and I believe the customer. She took the case to court. He was suspended for almost a year. Then surprise, one day he shows up a work and is bragging how he is getting back pay for the whole vacation. Unions served a great purpose at one time and I am thankful for them because I have a decent job and am able to take care of my girl. At the same time, they protect bad employees, reduce efficiency, and eliminate incentive. I wish I were paid based on my performance most days.
