Dike?? I thought it was dyke.

message 2013: by Jammies (new)

Jammies Damnit, I wish I could remember what word I wanted to look up the etymology for. >:(

message 2014: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11841 comments A dike is what a Dutch boy sticks his finger in.

A dyke? Well, that's something altogether different.

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
I think it is Dyke as much as bell hooks talks about womyn.

Youndyc | 1255 comments My mom called last night, and she wants me to meet her in Omaha in early May for the Berkshire Hathaway annual meeting. She owns one or two shares of the stock, so she can get credentials for us. She's most excited about the Q&A and the exhibitors. Anybody been to the meeting before? How's Omaha? Where should we stay, given that all the hotels downtown are booked?

kogijiki (covered in mud) (kogijiki) | 235 comments Omaha is lovely! I am shit at remembering names but there is a district downtown (Old Market) that is fun and funky and artsy. And a restaurant that has this amazing cheese soup...I'll see if I can get the actual name. (Upstream Brewing Company http://www.opentable.com/upstream-bre... ) Tons of galleries, their main art collection is pretty good and their zoo!! Their zoo is freaking amazing and I have been to the San Diego zoo.

As for staying places I lived in Lincoln at the time (45 minutes West) so I only ever just drove in.

Youndyc | 1255 comments Cheese soup sounds delicious, I'm going to have to try some.

kogijiki (covered in mud) (kogijiki) | 235 comments It is sooooo good! Everything they have there is good but I could bathe in the cheese soup! LOL

Plus if you are into gambling you can drive across the bridge to Iowa and hit the riverboat casinos. :)

Omaha is really lovely, lots of money there (Mutual of Omaha) and they LOVE art, it is everywhere!

message 2021: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) I have been to the meeting before, Youndy. It's a hoot. Last year we met Leslie David Baker, the guy who plays Stanley Hudson on The Office. Omaha gets crazy that week. The Berkshire people take over the city, spending lots of cash.

I actually live about a block from the Century Link Center where the meeting is held. The Q&A session with Buffett and Munger is really neat, if you can get in the room. Luckily they have it on video screens all over the place.

I agree the cheese soup at Upstream is pretty good. It's a microbrewery, too, with pretty good beers of all types. Old Market area is a quick walk from where I live, actually, too.

Youndy, coincidentally, we will be in DC that week. It would have been nice to get to meet you!

Two shares of BRK is a nice nest egg for mom.

message 2023: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Phil -- they have Class B shares now that ordinary people can afford. Not that I'm doubting Youndy's mom has the Class A shares.

message 2024: by Youndyc (new)

Youndyc | 1255 comments Lord only knows what my mom has frittered away. One of these days, hopefully in the distant future, I will find out.
Felix, I'm normally in Florida, but I'm bummed you'll be out of town when I am in Omaha. Would have been so cool to meet one of the TC crowd!

kogijiki (covered in mud) (kogijiki) | 235 comments Felix I am green with envy! I miss that soup so much! O.O

I hope you like it after all this!

message 2030: by Youndyc (new)

Youndyc | 1255 comments I'm sure that I will. How can cheese soup be bad? Unless it's made with havarti or blue cheese or some other spotted cheese. But I'm assuming we're talking here about a cheddar blend.

kogijiki (covered in mud) (kogijiki) | 235 comments I think it's gouda.

message 2032: by Youndyc (new)

Youndyc | 1255 comments Gouda is good.

message 2036: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia Paschen | 7333 comments You can always whip up some Swiss cheese fondue. Or Gruyere. Pure melted cheese trumps cheese soup, at least to this cook.

I have an old recipe for Beer Cheese soup if anyone wants to try it.

Carol | 1678 comments No GR digests in ages so I don't know what's going on around here! Did I tell you I saved my cat's life? Or that I had my two-year checkup, all good?

Great news, Carol.

And, I've never had cheese soup. The closest I've come is probably French Onion. I think I last had French Onion soup as a teenager.

kogijiki (covered in mud) (kogijiki) | 235 comments Great news Carol!

message 2042: by Carol (new)

Carol | 1678 comments White Kitty likes to get a drink from the pool. When it's filled properly this is not a problem for him. Luckily I was outside frolicking with the animals when he fell in. He was fareeeaking OUT, and would have exhausted himself trying to get out at the same spot he fell in. You'd think other animals would be curious about the death wails of another, but not my dogs.

It didn't make my head ring. However, it happened AGAIN later in the day. My tongue was in enough pain that it was unpleasant to eat. I googled to try to figure out what to do with my tongue when I feel a sneeze coming on and found lots of idiotic and conflicting information. However, I did learn that you should never suppress a sneeze because sneezes can be up to 100 mph and you can blow an artery or something.

My tongue is just getting back to normal all these hours later.

My new goal is to go to fewer doctors and doctor appointments, not more. Given that whenever I go, a bill seems to follow shortly.
