Because they got tired of people asking them if their daughter wanted a cracker.

Does anyone know what bird makes that call that sounds like the sound a dog makes when it's sad? It's kind of a high pitched whine, but very short.

That hardly sounds reasonable. F**ing scam if you ask me.

But clever of you to block out your license plate so we can't stalk you. Very googlish!

message 1612: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) I can see it's a KIA. What model is it? Optima? That badge on there is not legible.

message 1613: by Janice (new)

Janice (jamasc) That's a ridiculous price! It costs less to replace the motor. Glad that you didn't get hurt.

message 1614: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Lopez | 4726 comments Sorry to hear about the accident, Barb. The repair bill really sucks. But as Janice said, it's good that nobody got hurt.

message 1615: by Michele (new)

Michele bookloverforever (lovebooks14) | 1970 comments sounds a little too high to me, Barb. Are you OK?

message 1616: by Phil (last edited Jun 22, 2011 07:11AM) (new)

Phil | 11841 comments The 8K is to make it "like new," right?

They'll have to replace the entire rear quarter panel and the trunk (boot) lid. There may be unseen damage underneath as well.

It would probably only be $1,500 to bang it out with a sledge & make it serviceable, but who wants that?

What happened is that the car did exactly what it is designed to do. It crumpled itself to absorb the impact, rather than passing that force on to your bones and flesh. A fair trade, I'd say.

message 1622: by Michele (new)

Michele bookloverforever (lovebooks14) | 1970 comments I don't want to go back to my 40's: bulging discs, sciatica, migraines. spent my days in pain and spare hours in doctors offices. no thanks. the closer I come to death the happier I am: no more pain at last! The sciatica is mostly gone but now the bursitis takes it's place, along with pain in the left knee, fingers and of course the ever present migraines. sigh. I avoid pain killers because they destroy either the liver or the kidneys and I have enough problems without those being added to the list. It's why I spend so much time reading fiction so I can become absorbed in someone else's active, healthy ,fun filled, adventurous, active lives.

The marriage prohibition between U.S. soldiers and German women was in force longer than the general order against fraternization – until December 1946. A survey conducted in 1955 in West Germany counted 66,730 children born out of wedlock during the occupation, 37,000 of whom had American fathers. Over 10% of them were the children of African-American soldiers. This photo shows German foster parents with children from a German-American relationship in Munich (1949). Photo by Hanns Hubmann.

Sometimes I notice the most odd, random, serendipitous connections between books. The last four books I've read have nothing to do with each other. Strong Motion by Jonathan Franzen takes place mostly in Somerville, Mass. The next book I read, Sleepless Nights by Elizabeth Hardwick, the narrator lives for a time in Somerville, Mass. Then I read The Mysterious Affair at Styles by Agatha Christie. Then yesterday I started reading The Great Hill Stations of Asia and I came across a passage describing how The Mysterious Affair at Styles was based on Lady Ormsby-Gore, who died of strychnine poisoning at the Savoy Hotel in Mussoorie, one of the Himalayan hill stations.

Special request to all you kids returning to school in the next few days: If you see someone who is struggling to make friends or being bullied because he/she doesn't have many friends or because they are shy or not as pretty or not dressed in the nicest clothes -- PLEASE step up. Say hi or at least smile at them in the hallway. You never know what that person might be facing outside of school. Your kindness might just make a BIG difference in someone's life. Re-post please :)
