Introduce Yourself
Hi, my name is Ashley and I live in Malmesbury, UK with my son and daughter who stay at the weekend. I am an Archaeologist and often work away from home so my Kindle travels with me. I love fantasy and Sci-fi and have read more since getting my Kindle.
Other things I like are fly fishing and messing about on my computers.

Hi Ashley. you are like a real Lara Croft :))) that's amazing!!

I second Stanislava's Lara Croft reference. Can you throw in World Chess Champion as well? I know that won't be true (??) but it would make you seem even more awesome!

My name is Rachel Coles. I'm from Denver Colorado. I'm addicted to science fiction and fantasy. My favorite writers so far are Neil Gaiman, David Brin, Terry Pratchett, and Dan Simmons. I loved the Hyperion series, The Uplift series by David Brin, his standalone novel Kiln People, of course Discworld series, though the ones with Death are my favorite. I also love American Gods and Neverwhere. I work as a medical anthropologist and will soon be starting a position as a program evaluator for medical care.
On the side, I am currently addicted to watching Supernatural. And when I say addicted, I mean staying up till 2 in the morning unable to stop clicking Next on the remote.
I also write older young adult urban fantasy. I have a novel published called Pazuzu's Girl. I am looking around to do a giveaway. Is this a good group to host one? I'd be happy to offer that if there is interest.
Thanks for the welcome although I see myself more Indiana Jones. An ex-boss used to call me Dr. Jones (spoken in German accent as well).

I am a translator by trade (Chinese to English), and my latest translation project is to translate a suspense novel -- I'm very excited about that, because finally my "day job" is allowing me to do something that is more in line with what I hope to make a career out of: writing fiction.
I predominantly write science fiction and fantasy; I have written one sci-fi novel, which will come out soon if all goes well, and am hard at work on the first in a trilogy of fantasy novels. I also write short stories and "flash fiction," the latter of which I post for free on my website ( www.gainespost.com ) on a weekly basis. I welcome you to come take a gander :-) And feel free to let me know what you think, or to spread the word if you like the site!
It's nice to meet you all. I'm a newbie to Goodreads (thank you very much for the suggestion, GP and MS!), and I look forward to talking about good books with folks.
Cheers :-)

I haven't read the Codex Alera, but I read the Harry Dresden series. Loved it, wondering when the next one eill come out.

Hi Rachel! I'm a huge Dresden fan as well. While waiting for the next one in the series, someone recommended that I read Hard Spell by Justin Gustainis. It's kind of like a paranormal Law and Order. I like it so far..I'm about half way through.
Rachel wrote: "Ashley, what is your area of specialty in archaeology?"
I work out in the field but have an interest in environmental archaeology and anglo-saxon churches.

My name is Andrew Weaver, I recently joined goodreads, and a few weeks ago I finally published a book that I wrote…10 years ago!!!
I am currently living in the United Kingdom and I enjoy reading a wide variety of books. In my younger years I was heavily influenced by a lot of Science Fiction – I even went to the same school as H.G. Wells.
My new book called Martin has been for sale through the Kindle store for a few weeks now and I have already received some very positive feedback. Interestingly, several readers have told me their version of how they thought the book ends, and they are all different to how I imagined it – maybe they were just as confused as the main character was!
My book is currently available through Amazon: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Martin-ebook/......
You can keep up to date with further news on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/Martin.8008
I am looking forward to discovering and getting involved with this group as well as other parts of goodreads.

Congratulations on your new novel! I'll check it out! If you want to do an author interview or something on my site let me know. I'm happy to give you some free publicity. My website is http://www.rachelcoles.wordpress.com if you want to check it out and let me know if you want to do that. I do author interviews from time to time, book reviews occasionally, and other things.

My name is Kai, I live in Brooklyn, NY, though I am originally from Germany.
Have just recently joined GR and subsequently this group here.
I work in Computer Science, specifically artificial intelligence research around pattern recognition.
When not reading I play Tennis or tend to my garden.
Guess that should be a good start.
One thing that I could not quite figure out yet is the books that are being read currently, and which ones are in the pipeline.
I guess that will come with time though.
Per my understanding as of today "River of Gods" by Ian Mc Donald is on the menu.
Though I cant find any thread about that.

Nice Idea, I use a few geeky words in my books so I think I'll add one to my web site.

I'm an English author come late to the trade. After three former careers I thought I'd switch to writing, expecting it to be less stressful. So much for that idea, I now spend most of my time trying to stop my characters doing things I don't want them to do.
I currently have two books published, 'Anvil of Change' and 'Hammer of Fate' hard core space opera in my Edge of Destiny series. I would add links but I ain't figured out how to do that yet. It's hard to believe I spent 15 years as a computer programer but then, that was back in the day when computers were the size of bungalows and windows were glass things that let the daylight in.

Per my understanding as of today "River of Gods" by Ian McDonald is on the menu. Though I cant find any thread about that. "
Welcome to the group Kai! On the group home page you should see the two books that are currently being read, and the next two coming up. The discussion for River of Gods is now up. Scroll down a bit and you'll see "August Book Discussions". Looking forward to hearing your thoughts...

I was a "late bloomer" as they say and graduated college as a senior citizen. I then practiced archaeology for a while, but before that I had been a secretary for many years. I'm retired now and like many grandmas sit, knit and read science fiction. They are both of my hobbies.
I'll be interested to see what this group is all about and hope to keep up with all of you.

My name is Sechin Tower and I'm a lifelong sci-fi enthusiast and all-around nerd. I'm a teacher (high school English) an author (Mad Science Institute) and a game designer (Hollow Earth Expedition RPG)
For all that, I'm kind of particular about what I read and I tend to go on book quests for very specific concepts/topics, so I can use your advice to help me find the sorts of novels I'm looking for.

I work a a Communications engineer in Washington DC

So, what are you looking for? I can throw a bunch of titles at random, but if you're fussy, most won't "stick". Clues would help all of us to offer some good titles.

My name is Kevin and I am from Sacramento, CA. I have two jobs: one as a restaurant manager and the other as an officer for the Army Reserves. I am married with one child and another on the way. My passion in life is sci fi and fantasy. I have been collecting comic books since I was 8 (all the big guns like Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, X-Men, Green Lantern...)
I recently finished my first novel, Relics and Wonders: Lombard's Amulet, an epic fantasy set in a world full of elves, dwarves, sorcerers, vampires, werewolves, mutants, zombies, and anything else you can think of.
I own a Nook Color and a Kindle, and have now come to really enjoy reading ebooks. It was amazing to sit back and read my novel to my wife on my Nook.
Other than reading and writing, I enjoy watching movies, playing with my son, music, and I love watching a good UFC fight.
I look forward to getting to know new people in this forum.
Happy reading to all!

My name is Stephen Gordon. I'm 39 years old and live in Larne, Northern Ireland where I work for a heavy manufacturing company. I'm married to Kirsten and have 3 children. Like any family they are a handful and the best thing that ever happened to me.
I grew up on sci-fi and horror novels with a steady stream of comic books. About a year ago I decided I wanted to be a writer so I signed up for a English Literature degree with the Open University. I also setup my own website where I've started posting original short stories for free.
I'm not in a big rush to put a book out and want to spend a few years getting my story-telling right, reading the best of what's out there and getting feedback on my work from others who enjoy reading the same things I do.
I'd love for you all to add me as a Goodreads friend and get your recommendations for your 'must-read' scifi and fantasy books.
Cheers

Been reading scifi since I was ten or so. Now I'm 45, a dad with two daughters and don't find much time to read anymore. When I do, it's on my smartphone, and before that my trusty Palm Pilot E2. So glad ebooks have finally caught on. I still hoard my paperbacks from years gone by, but nothing beats having a library I can carry in one hand.

Am an ex-scientist (if one can ever be one) who has moved to private sector few years ago.
I wrote a sci-fi pa novel that is now in editing phase after beta-reading phase went by in flying colors. At the moment is at best at ARC level so not asking anyone to read it :) I'll wait the last batch from the editor. Almost there.
I discovered goodreads from Amazon Authors' forums with a caveat warning.
It turned out true. Oh well, lessons are there to be learned I guess.
I'll be reading to get the mood of the group right, first.
Cheers everyone
Massimo

If I don't get my fantasy book fix, I wilt. I'm an artist, and though I wish I could write..it's not my forte.
I love my 2nd generation Kindle...and believe it or not could not even wish for a newer version.
I have a Shiba Inu (Mysti)...the most interesting dog I've ever had, a feral cat (Wheeler), and a dusty calico (Mona Lisa). They're my babies.

Just a quick introduction. I'm Darvin from Philadelphia. Just hoping to understand what readers look for in an eBook so that I can improve my own sells, and also connect with people who have some of the same interests. I am always looking for great reads and usually rely on scanning my old issues of "Realms of Fantasy" for the book reviews.
Currently reading "Scar Night" by Alan Campbell and also J.M. Mcdermotts "When We Were Executioners". Both are great reads so far.
Please feel free to contact me, send an email, Facebook me, etc. I'm always looking to connect with interesting folks.

I'm [We're] JAK HOLDING, author of the SIMON VECTOR sci-fi series. I'm glad to be a part of the group and encourage everyone to check out our books!

I'm not good with introductions (it's more like I'm lazy...), so I'll link you to my blog's profile page, invite you to check my GR profile, as well as visit my Protagonize author page, if you're interested in getting to know more about me:

I do aspire to become an author someday, but that is a long-term goal. Right now I hope to complete a career degree in one of the many subjects that interest me. I was studying Computer Science, and I truly love it, but due to mostly personal and financial issues, had to put that on hold. If I can't get back to CS, I'll probably end up going with something on a very different direction. We'll see.
Anyway, nice to meet you!

@Rob: Nice to meet you! God, I love the book covers! I think I'll join the giveaway. XD
Everybody else: it's a pleasure to meet you all! There are so many authors here. I guess I'll have a long list of books to read. :)

My first book, "Into the Vast", was released last month.
It looks like a really great group here on the forum based on the last few posts. And I would have to agree with Jessica that Rob has some pretty incredible covers. Well done.

I've always been a scifi and fantasy fan. I just started reading Daniel Abraham's Dragon's Path, with Ian Banks's The Player of Games waiting in the wings.
