I think she'll be thinking more for books and probably doesn't need colour. I was wondering about the Kindle Paperwhite?

i grew up playing dragon warrior and final fantasy, etc. and have always had a love of those types of fantasy worlds. as a kid i even tried to invent my own games and would draw maps and monsters, and even inventories of weapons and armor. i love reading sci-fi and fantasy, i started writing this past summer—slowly and poorly—and i still enjoy video games from time to time.
favorite authors include douglas adams, ursula k. leguin, edgar allen poe, neil gaiman, and i am somewhat of george r. r. martin fanatic.

With the writing the only way to improve is to keep writing. Ideally you want people you explain why it's bad and how you can improve it.

i'll get there eventually.

You'll know when you're a writer, you'll be making notes of the things the little ones say so you can use the dialogue later ;-)

my name is Ryan. I'm a sci fi nerd, even though I'm a horror author. But I work for a publisher that produces some great sci fi books--don't worry, I'm not here to spam all the time; I genuinely love talking about sci fi books. I just finished book two of the Laundry Series (awesome) and am starting Ringworld for the first time. Cheers!

Welcome aboard. I think there was one "Laundry" book I was ho-hum about, but the rest of the series has been a winner for me so far. Read "Ringworld" decades ago and loved it, too -- might be curious at some point to see how it holds up today. :-)

i started reading the fire by sm stirling. it kinda reminds of http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/73... and the patriots

Like Charles I'd be interested to see how Ringworld holds up, must be forty years since I read it.

My name is Inpei Futsuni, and I'm a huge geek. I love everything from manga to sci-fi/fantasy novels and I'm very picky about what I read, which is not to say I don't enjoy other genres.
The main reason I joined this group was to learn of a few books that I might've missed these past few years. I have been very busy, and so reading time has been kinda scarce. Hopefully this fixes it.
By the way, I'm also a writer, and my time-traveling fantasy novel is free till Wednesday for those interested :). http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0094P9OY0 #shamelessplug
Anyway, nice to meet you all ^^

I am grateful for the popular and fun action sci-fi works and franchises. They hooked me, leading to a deeper appreciation of the genre.
Lately I find myself seeking out classics. It is amazing to me how relevant the issues are, despite the changing technology. Well, that is human nature.
Like a good number of you, apparently, I am also an author. Book one of the Tethered Worlds series Unwelcome Star is out, and book two is on my monitor even as I type.
I look to good interactions with you in the future.

Yes: rumor has it that Amazon is now trying to estimate the date when authors will actually outnumber readers. ;-)

You mean we haven't reached that point yet? Well, I'll tell ya, I'm feeling really outnumbered :)

I suspect Clay's right. Depends on the group but some seem to have a high proportion of writers.
Mind you, writers are readers as well ;-)

I've enjoyed reading for many years now. Really, it was The Hobbit that got me started enjoying reading on my own when I was a kid. I also like some of the classical American novels like The Great Gatsby and To Kill a Mocking Bird.
I enjoy playing video games and I’ve pre-ordered Bioshock 3. I got a free copy of an e-book that ties in with the game, so I’ve been reading that on my iPad. I like using the kindle app on it.
One of the reasons I joined this group is because I’ve started my own medieval fantasy series, a bunch of short stories that I’m self-publishing one by one and then I’ll put them all into a novel. I'm interested in learning more about what people like in fantasy books. I may want to ask questions about what people like or don’t like when they read fantasy.
I really like the Goodreads site and it kind of motivates me to read. I’m going to try and read more books, when I’m not reading textbooks! :)
Hope you all are having a wonderful week!

I hope to make new friends here- get some good recs from you and hope that you will join me on the S.S.Wordsmyth on Amazon to meet some of the best science fiction writers in the world! Thanks for letting me join!

Realism with a sprinkling of magic.
I hope to get to know a few of you in this group and pick up a few great reads that have passed me by. My favourite fantasy author, so far, is Terry Goodkind.
I have three books available through amazon and soon smashwords too:

My name is Martin, I'm an English man living in Wales not far from Cardiff.
Been a Sci Fi fan ever since reading 2000AD as a kid.
Love David Drake ,Tom Clancy, Harry Harison, E E Smith and loads more.
Got a Kindle for Christamas two years ago so no more arguments about about buying books with my better half but if she ever sees my amazon account I'm a dead man.

I'm 47 and have been reading SF since I were an egg, well about 12 really.
I've read lots of Asimov, EE Doc Smith, Heinlein, Brin, Niven, PS Farmer, KS Robinson ....
My all time faves are William Gibson & Bruce Sterling, if I had a little shrine they would be there with Ian Curtis and Joy Division.
Authors which are a must read for me are also Neal Asher, Richard Morgan, Iain M Banks of course, Neal Stephenson, Alastair Reynolds, Peter F Hamilton.
I've had a kindle for about 2 years, it now feels weird to hold an actual book. Anyone done this? .. you're reading an actual book, come across a word you want to know the meaning of and try and highlight ... Doh!

Warneke Reading is a small proofreading company based in Minnesota. Currently focusing on the Indie writer crowd, we are excited to help these talented artists realize their dreams. Please see our website for more info: www.warnekereading.com

I am a fantasy author who has come to Goodreads in search of readers. I have a series called DARKIN, and the first two books in the series are out. They are meaty and deep, and well worth you're time (author blushes). Anyway, I give away the first book free just about everywhere you can get ebooks online, hoping to find readers who will like it and review it for me. The second book isn't free, but if anyone here reads the first and is interested, I will gift it to them. Thanks so much!

I also write, though sci-fi romance rather than straight sci-fi.

We're getting more and more subgenres, by SF Romance is one that I've not specifically come across before. I've read SF which did have a romance of sorts in it but the romance was peripheral to the story

I like to read sci fi and fantasy, amongst other genres and I write fantasy.
I tend to read on Kindle now but still do get paperbacks from time to time.

Since this is an introduction, then allow me to circle back and start that.
Hi, I'm political science fiction author Laurel A. Rockefeller of the data-grounded Peers of Beinan series. I am strongly influenced by not only my academic background in medieval history (I've been playing with the Society for Creative Anachronism since I was 18), but also such greats as J.R.R Tolkien, Frank Herbert (Dune made a big influence on the political side of my books), Heinlein, Dorothy DC Fontana (another SCAdian!), JMS (oh how I want to meet him at that Phoenix Con! RATS! Cannot make the trip), and so some degree George Lucas.
I currently live in western Pennsylvania, but I've lived all over the United States, including Brooklyn New York which is so far my favorite place to live; I left Brooklyn due to the recession just in time to avoid two hurricanes. My heart goes out to everyone in Brooklyn still suffering in the aftermath of Sandy where the recovery is still so slow, even now!
I am a cockatoo person, so if you see some odd typos, that is actually my bird typing to you; she is very good at surfing the internet! :)

eInk battery lasts much longer is great outdoors but like a pbook needs light to read. (though newer ones have a light built in to the edge of the screen)
Fire/LCD - is more like a tablet - better for comics, youtube/videos etc. but lower battery life and isn't viewable very well outdoors/in bright light.
