Kenny Chaffin (kennychaffin) | 96 comments Well basically there are two types - eInk (black & white) and LCD (color - Fire).

eInk battery lasts much longer is great outdoors but like a pbook needs light to read. (though newer ones have a light built in to the edge of the screen)

Fire/LCD - is more like a tablet - better for comics, youtube/videos etc. but lower battery life and isn't viewable very well outdoors/in bright light.

I think she'll be thinking more for books and probably doesn't need colour. I was wondering about the Kindle Paperwhite?

Andrew✌️ (andrew619) | 24 comments Hi my name is Andrew, I live in Italy and I am a newbie in this group. I like fantasy books since I was a child and after I started reading sciFi and watch TV series, like Star Trek, Buck Rogers or The Twilight Zone, to the most recent series like Fringe. Last year I bought my Kindle book and I began to read so many ebooks. My Favorites authotrs from both genres are surely George R. R. Martin, Douglas Adams, David Eddings and John R.R. Tolkien.

Kenny Chaffin (kennychaffin) | 96 comments Welcome Andrew!

message 507: by Jim (new)

Jim | 418 comments Yes, welcome aboard Andrew

message 508: by Josh (new)

Josh (7point34) | 5 comments i am 33, happily married with two children and three dogs. my daughter is brand new and so i haven't had as much chance to read lately as usual.

i grew up playing dragon warrior and final fantasy, etc. and have always had a love of those types of fantasy worlds. as a kid i even tried to invent my own games and would draw maps and monsters, and even inventories of weapons and armor. i love reading sci-fi and fantasy, i started writing this past summer—slowly and poorly—and i still enjoy video games from time to time.

favorite authors include douglas adams, ursula k. leguin, edgar allen poe, neil gaiman, and i am somewhat of george r. r. martin fanatic.

message 509: by Jim (new)

Jim | 418 comments A nice selection of writers there Josh.
With the writing the only way to improve is to keep writing. Ideally you want people you explain why it's bad and how you can improve it.

message 510: by Josh (new)

Josh (7point34) | 5 comments oh i agree completely. the problem is an issue of time management, especially with a little one.

i'll get there eventually.

You'll know when you're a writer, you'll be making notes of the things the little ones say so you can use the dialogue later ;-)

Ryan Thomas (ryancthomas) | 2 comments Hey all,
my name is Ryan. I'm a sci fi nerd, even though I'm a horror author. But I work for a publisher that produces some great sci fi books--don't worry, I'm not here to spam all the time; I genuinely love talking about sci fi books. I just finished book two of the Laundry Series (awesome) and am starting Ringworld for the first time. Cheers!

message 513: by Kenny (new)

Kenny Chaffin (kennychaffin) | 96 comments Welcome Ryan! Hope you enjoy Ringworld (and I hope it holds up) it's been many a year since I read it. :)

Charles (nogdog) Ryan wrote: "...I just finished book two of the Laundry Series (awesome) and am starting Ringworld for the first time. Cheers!"

Welcome aboard. I think there was one "Laundry" book I was ho-hum about, but the rest of the series has been a winner for me so far. Read "Ringworld" decades ago and loved it, too -- might be curious at some point to see how it holds up today. :-)

Like Charles I'd be interested to see how Ringworld holds up, must be forty years since I read it.

message 517: by Ryan (new)

Ryan Thomas (ryancthomas) | 2 comments Ill let you know!

message 518: by John (new)

John Baker (bakerjw) | 39 comments Ringworld is by my favorite book of all time. So much so that I picked up a signed, first edition, first printing copy of it. It has such a grand scope that it is hard to match.

message 519: by Inpei (new)

Inpei Futsuni | 2 comments Hey all :),
My name is Inpei Futsuni, and I'm a huge geek. I love everything from manga to sci-fi/fantasy novels and I'm very picky about what I read, which is not to say I don't enjoy other genres.

The main reason I joined this group was to learn of a few books that I might've missed these past few years. I have been very busy, and so reading time has been kinda scarce. Hopefully this fixes it.

By the way, I'm also a writer, and my time-traveling fantasy novel is free till Wednesday for those interested :). http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0094P9OY0 #shamelessplug

Anyway, nice to meet you all ^^

message 520: by Gregory (new)

Gregory Faccone (gregoryfaccone) | 1 comments Hello, my name is Gregory. Like you, I appreciate sci-fi. And probably, like most of you, I enjoy a wide variety of sub-categories.

I am grateful for the popular and fun action sci-fi works and franchises. They hooked me, leading to a deeper appreciation of the genre.

Lately I find myself seeking out classics. It is amazing to me how relevant the issues are, despite the changing technology. Well, that is human nature.

Like a good number of you, apparently, I am also an author. Book one of the Tethered Worlds series Unwelcome Star is out, and book two is on my monitor even as I type.

I look to good interactions with you in the future.

Yes: rumor has it that Amazon is now trying to estimate the date when authors will actually outnumber readers. ;-)

You mean we haven't reached that point yet? Well, I'll tell ya, I'm feeling really outnumbered :)

I suspect Clay's right. Depends on the group but some seem to have a high proportion of writers.
Mind you, writers are readers as well ;-)

message 524: by Jack (last edited Mar 20, 2013 07:41PM) (new)

Jack Price (jackprice) | 2 comments Hi to all. My name is Jack Price, and I grew up reading Asimov, Clarke, Heinlein, Silverberg, and many others. Loved the various incarnations of Star Trek also. The past 25 years, I've been also into literary fic: Bukowski, Cormac McCarthy, John Fante. Yes -- I'm an author too, having written Machines of Easy Virtue, a noir piece set in 2070s Chicago.

Scott Brown (sdbmania) | 5 comments Hi everyone!

I've enjoyed reading for many years now. Really, it was The Hobbit that got me started enjoying reading on my own when I was a kid. I also like some of the classical American novels like The Great Gatsby and To Kill a Mocking Bird.

I enjoy playing video games and I’ve pre-ordered Bioshock 3. I got a free copy of an e-book that ties in with the game, so I’ve been reading that on my iPad. I like using the kindle app on it.

One of the reasons I joined this group is because I’ve started my own medieval fantasy series, a bunch of short stories that I’m self-publishing one by one and then I’ll put them all into a novel. I'm interested in learning more about what people like in fantasy books. I may want to ask questions about what people like or don’t like when they read fantasy.

I really like the Goodreads site and it kind of motivates me to read. I’m going to try and read more books, when I’m not reading textbooks! :)
Hope you all are having a wonderful week!

David Staniforth (davidstaniforth) | 111 comments Hi I'm an author of mainly fantasy, but my interest in reading and writing other genres has led me to write fantasy with a little difference that I've come to name:

Realism with a sprinkling of magic.

I hope to get to know a few of you in this group and pick up a few great reads that have passed me by. My favourite fantasy author, so far, is Terry Goodkind.

I have three books available through amazon and soon smashwords too:

Billy Wong | 8 comments Behold, I hath come. And I am... some guy who likes fast-paced fantasy with lots of action starring warrior characters. I also write, usually about super tough heroines who could take on the likes of Conan or Druss toe to toe. I have two books out along with some silly short stories, and have another novel coming out early next month.

My name is Martin, I'm an English man living in Wales not far from Cardiff.
Been a Sci Fi fan ever since reading 2000AD as a kid.
Love David Drake ,Tom Clancy, Harry Harison, E E Smith and loads more.
Got a Kindle for Christamas two years ago so no more arguments about about buying books with my better half but if she ever sees my amazon account I'm a dead man.

message 539: by Chas (new)

Chas (chazza123) Hello all, my name is Chas and I live in the UK north-east of Manchester, in't th'ills.
I'm 47 and have been reading SF since I were an egg, well about 12 really.

I've read lots of Asimov, EE Doc Smith, Heinlein, Brin, Niven, PS Farmer, KS Robinson ....
My all time faves are William Gibson & Bruce Sterling, if I had a little shrine they would be there with Ian Curtis and Joy Division.

Authors which are a must read for me are also Neal Asher, Richard Morgan, Iain M Banks of course, Neal Stephenson, Alastair Reynolds, Peter F Hamilton.

I've had a kindle for about 2 years, it now feels weird to hold an actual book. Anyone done this? .. you're reading an actual book, come across a word you want to know the meaning of and try and highlight ... Doh!

Warneke Reading (Warneke_Reading) | 8 comments Hello! My husband & I are “Warneke Reading” and we are super excited to be a part of Goodreads!! Our passion for reading has led us to begin a business of proofreading. We love books! Some of our favorites are: The Lord of the Rings series and the original Dune series. My husband loves Terry Brooks and Tim Dorsey. I’m a huge fan of Charlaine Harris and Michael Crichton. We both love almost any genre, but probably have read more in fantasy and scifi. I also love classic writers like Austen and Dickens. And my husband enjoys graphic novels like Watchmen.
Warneke Reading is a small proofreading company based in Minnesota. Currently focusing on the Indie writer crowd, we are excited to help these talented artists realize their dreams. Please see our website for more info: www.warnekereading.com

Joseph Turkot | 4 comments Hello all-

I am a fantasy author who has come to Goodreads in search of readers. I have a series called DARKIN, and the first two books in the series are out. They are meaty and deep, and well worth you're time (author blushes). Anyway, I give away the first book free just about everywhere you can get ebooks online, hoping to find readers who will like it and review it for me. The second book isn't free, but if anyone here reads the first and is interested, I will gift it to them. Thanks so much!

Philip McClimon (philmwrites) | 9 comments I am from Fort Worth, Texas, though not originally. Like SciFi, Dystopian /Apocalyptic, Thriller, and fantasy. Wrote a zombie book (don't worry I 'm not plugging it). Reading THE ANDROID'S DREAM and looking forward to hanging out and talking about. Thanks.

message 547: by Rinelle (new)

Rinelle Grey (rinellegrey) | 8 comments Hi. My name's Rinelle, and I live in Australia with hubby and daughter. I love sci-fi, though I've more watched TV than read. Just getting into reading again now I have the Kindle app on my ipad.

I also write, though sci-fi romance rather than straight sci-fi.

message 548: by Jim (new)

Jim | 418 comments Hi Rinelle.
We're getting more and more subgenres, by SF Romance is one that I've not specifically come across before. I've read SF which did have a romance of sorts in it but the romance was peripheral to the story

message 549: by A.L. (new)

A.L. Butcher (alb2012) | 37 comments Hello:) You might know me from various other groups but if not hello:)

I like to read sci fi and fantasy, amongst other genres and I write fantasy.

I tend to read on Kindle now but still do get paperbacks from time to time.

message 550: by Laurel (new)

Laurel Rockefeller (laurelarockefeller) Alexandra is the reason why I am here! And yes, she does read paperback. :) My books are best read in paperback because I'm a world builder who loves to include lots of reference materials in my books rather than taking what are to me cheap shortcuts like using Earth references for time and distance when my books are set in another galaxy!

Since this is an introduction, then allow me to circle back and start that.

Hi, I'm political science fiction author Laurel A. Rockefeller of the data-grounded Peers of Beinan series. I am strongly influenced by not only my academic background in medieval history (I've been playing with the Society for Creative Anachronism since I was 18), but also such greats as J.R.R Tolkien, Frank Herbert (Dune made a big influence on the political side of my books), Heinlein, Dorothy DC Fontana (another SCAdian!), JMS (oh how I want to meet him at that Phoenix Con! RATS! Cannot make the trip), and so some degree George Lucas.

I currently live in western Pennsylvania, but I've lived all over the United States, including Brooklyn New York which is so far my favorite place to live; I left Brooklyn due to the recession just in time to avoid two hurricanes. My heart goes out to everyone in Brooklyn still suffering in the aftermath of Sandy where the recovery is still so slow, even now!

I am a cockatoo person, so if you see some odd typos, that is actually my bird typing to you; she is very good at surfing the internet! :)
