message 1: by Miss Amelia (new)

Miss Amelia (missameliatxva) This topic is pretty self-explanatory. It's pretty much the opposite of recommending books. Let's face it, some books are just pretty crappy. If you have read/heard of a book that you would NOT recommend, list it here! Maybe you can save somebody some time and energy :)

message 2: by Miss Amelia (new)

Miss Amelia (missameliatxva) I have a Pass-Up list on my computer, and I put books on it that I read reviews for and decide not to read, just so I won't go back later and say "hmmm that sounds vaguely familiar"

So far my list is
Going Bovine - Libba Bray
Thirteen Reasons Why - some dude
Wake - Lisa McMann
Peeps - Scott Westerfeld

anything by Melissa Marr
*plus all the books on my "Pile o'Crap" shelf :P

Secrets in the Fire by Henning Mankell

My review says it all.
It is one of three 1 star books by me

message 5: by Laura (new)

Laura | 4 comments forest of hands and teeth- carrie ryan.
completely pointless and boring in my opinion

the first one was good but after that terrible.

message 7: by Ayunda (new)

Ayunda (ayundabs) I don't have any books that are too dreadful, most of the worst books I read are Indonesian anyway...

message 8: by Diana (new)

Diana I didn't like The Diamond of Darkhold either.

message 9: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey | 505 comments Whats wrong with it?

message 10: by Diana (new)

Diana I thought it was boring. I would have liked to see more action and suspense

message 11: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey | 505 comments Okay, I might read it anyway, just cuz I don't know if I want to leave it hanging like that xD I will probably regret it though haha.

message 12: by Diana (new)

Diana Yea, on the bright side you get to find out what happens.

message 13: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisao_0) Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson ( a way too lyrical novel about some emo, anoerexic chick)

Finnikin of the Rock by Meilina Marchetta (pointless)

and some others that I can't remember of the top of my head but I will post them up later...

message 14: by Jessica (last edited Jul 04, 2010 10:39PM) (new)

Jessica (JessfromTex) | 118 comments i agree with you about wintergirls. i didn't enjoy it at all.

I also didn't like Hush, Hush,Beautiful Creatures, andFallen. I think I found Hush Hush and Fallen too predictable and slow moving, while Beautiful Creatures was just corny. yuck. I'm pretty tired of this I'm-seventeen-years-old-and-I-just-found-my-soulmate.... who-also-happens-to-be-a-supernatural-creature-and-is-extremely-dangerous-to-be-around thing. lol thats a pretty long description...:)

message 15: by Miss Amelia (new)

Miss Amelia (missameliatxva) I'd add ASH to the list :(

and I like the WINTERGIRLS description. I read SPEAK for one of my lit classes a year or so ago, and I hated Anderson's writing style. Too Lifetime TV for me :P

message 16: by Miss Amelia (new)

Miss Amelia (missameliatxva) is that the TWILIGHT parody?

message 17: by Miss Amelia (new)

Miss Amelia (missameliatxva) oh my gosh I second FINNICK OF THE ROCK
:(

there's a (totally unnecessary) scene in which the MC hooks up with a prostitute.
Umm, hello?!

message 18: by [deleted user] (new)

I didn't like Speak, Private Peaceful, Any of the Twilight books, Siddartha, or Coraline. I have more. They're all on my 'hated' bookshelf.

message 19: by Diana (new)

Diana I really didn't like Pretty Little Liars by Sara Shepard.

message 20: by Annemarie (new)

Annemarie Carlson (annielawlz) | 116 comments Hmm.

Evermore - Alyson Noel
Vidalia in Paris - Sasha Watson
Dear John - Nicholas Sparks (Or any other book by him.)
Maximum Ride - James Patterson (everything after about book 2, that is.)
House of Night - P.C Cast + Kristin Cast... although I do love HoN, simply because it is one of my favorite books to make fun of. It's soooo stupid.
Tithe- Holly Black

Yup, I don't recommend any of these books.

message 21: by Rebekah Faith (new)

Rebekah Faith (musicalradiance) | 6788 comments I liked Evermore, Dear John (and other Nicholas Sparks book), most of Maximum Ride (Fang *shudders*)

I do NOT recommend Waiting for You by Susanne Colasanti

Twilight....
Hmmm, I thought it was alright.
Trashy writing, for sure, but it was certainly an entertaining story line (Its just that I finished the series before the movies came out, so I will always be a little biased)
But i still think its worth reading.

But THE BOOK THIEF!?!?!?!?
I LOVED THAT!!!!

Out of my 300 + books, only 20 have got 5 stars.
The Book Thief is certainly one of them.

message 29: by Mandie (new)

Mandie | 355 comments Nightlight A Parody by Harvard Lampoon Nightlight: A Parodythere were a few good jokes in it but overall not the best twilight parody ever and not really worth it

message 30: by Taylor (new)

Taylor (taylorjaylene) | 4557 comments My friend and I were reading that one in the bookstore and cracking up laughing just from looking at whatever page we opened to. I'm still going to give it a shot.

message 31: by [deleted user] (new)

me too! me and my cousin ae planning on reading it.

message 32: by Taylor (new)

Taylor (taylorjaylene) | 4557 comments I think I will just borrow it from the library. If they have it. Hopefully they do. I don't really want to buy it.

message 33: by [deleted user] (new)

i'm not gonna buy it either, i never buy books....i'm so cheap -.-'

message 34: by Taylor (new)

Taylor (taylorjaylene) | 4557 comments I buy books I know I will read over and over and over again. So I usually borrow them from someone/somewhere, and if I love it I'll buy it. That, or I'll ask for books I've been dying to read for Christmas and my birthday.

message 35: by Robotgirl33 (new)

Robotgirl33 DeShong | 189 comments I buy books If I'm really, really into them. Or if I can stand reading them more than once.

message 36: by Taylor (new)

Taylor (taylorjaylene) | 4557 comments I completely agree with this Oscar Wilde quote:

"If one cannot enjoy reading a book over and over again, there is no use in reading it at all."

That is what I live by in the realm of books. If it's not good enough to reread purely for enjoyment, it's not a good book.

I buy books most of the time.
I barely ever use the library.
That is the reason I own, like, 400+ books on my shelf.

message 40: by Taylor (new)

Taylor (taylorjaylene) | 4557 comments I own over 200 books... Probably over 250 by now... Lots of them are older books that I read when I was little, and there are several that I have never read because they were gifts...

message 41: by ★ Jess (new)

★ Jess | 4295 comments Mod
Yeah, some of my books are old ones, that my parents owned.
There are also a lot of second hand book, and a lot of gifts.

message 42: by Taylor (new)

Taylor (taylorjaylene) | 4557 comments If I'm buying a book, I don't usually buy it secondhand. I like to know where my books have been. Then again, I'll let my mom read my books, and then her friends want to read them. And then my books get passed around to a bunch of different people, and by the time they come back home... They may as well be secondhand. They're not in the condition I like them to be in.

It's amazing how expensive books are here in the States, though...

message 43: by ★ Jess (new)

★ Jess | 4295 comments Mod
Books are pretty expensive over here in Australia too.
What is the average price range in USA?

The only 2nd book I buy are the really old ones. Classics.
For example, I recently brought a second hand copy of 1984 by George Orwell.
I am also looking to buy The Hunchback of Notre Dame and the works of William Shakespeare second hand.
The old types of books, they are the ones I buy second hand :)

message 44: by Taylor (new)

Taylor (taylorjaylene) | 4557 comments I don't know what the currency differences are between Australia and the US, but here a hardcover book, list price, is about $17.99 and a paperback book is about $7.99-$8.99. It sometimes depends on the book and publisher, too. For instance, I saw a 100-page paperback for something like $10.99 the other day. And I remember the list price of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was $34.99. Granted, hardly ANYONE actually paid list price for it, but still...

message 45: by Ayunda (last edited Sep 15, 2010 01:56AM) (new)

Ayunda (ayundabs) in Indonesia, the import books (mainly english-languages) are very expensive.
but people here has a bad habit of translating books. they translate everything into Indonesian, and great books get turned into awful translated books.

message 46: by ★ Jess (new)

★ Jess | 4295 comments Mod
Oh, in Australia the average price is $23 American dollers, and for hardcovers $28

message 47: by Taylor (new)

Taylor (taylorjaylene) | 4557 comments Wow.

Well... I guess it also depends on how much other things cost in comparison...
