SOLVED. animals find man's clothing in the forest [s]

This was probably published in the 1950s or early 60s. A man in a safari hat is walking through a forest when he comes upon a pond, or some other body of water. He strips down to his boxers and goes for a swim. Meanwhile, animals find his clothes and try to figure out what they are for. For instance, the squirrel ties off the bottom of the pants legs and says they are a bag for nuts. To each suggestion, an owl says " I don't think so."

Maybe a husband and wife team on this.

I totally loved Jean Merrill's "Pushcart War." It was very politicizing for me, and interesting because I read it during the years of the student unrest in the late 60s.
