Steph (angel4492) | 32697 comments No, no, no you're not. I have a private group where I do the exact same thing. So, yeah, maybe you are, but then I am too. Let's wear our geek crowns proudly, yes? G|:D

Lis | 4037 comments LOL!! I think you missed the part where I confessed I'm not sure I'm monitoring my own very well... and I have a member list too. I'd be "crazy town" if I tried to monitor more...

But secretly my geek side is already forming an excel spreadsheet in my head to track 'em...

Christine | 850 comments Back to the 80s challenge: What if I go ahead and post it, but make it an open-ended you can start whenever you want. That way folks can start it, or wait until later if that's better for them?

message 256: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32697 comments LOL Lis! Go on wit ya bad self! ;)

Totally up to you, Christine. But, I agree, if you post it now, best to leave the dates as "set your own" since there are so many new ones popping up the first of the year.

Thanks for that Christine, very catchy, but I don't really remember it, even so.

Good idea to post it and leave it open dated :)

message 264: by Alyssa (last edited Jun 09, 2012 05:43PM) (new)

Alyssa (lyssad87) | 974 comments Sooo.... I had an idea.... For a game, not a challenge, or I guess you could technically say it's a team challenge. It would be sort of similar to Bingo. (This was the most fitting topic I found to post about my idea in.)

So, my idea would be to play Book Match. (I'm sure somebody could come up with a better name if we decided to play..... Match/Matching.... Genre/Topic.... or whatever.)

Anyways, anyone remember playing the matching game when you're little? (I can't recall if there's a specific name for it.) You've got a bunch of cards with pairs of pictures on them. (like 2 cards that each have a duck on them, and 2 that have cats on them, etc.) You lay them all face down and flip them over 2 at a time trying to match pairs. Whoever makes the most pairs wins.

I was thinking we could make this a game like was done with Bingo. The pairs could be like any of the shelves we use for Bingo. (So, you may have to read 2 5-star books to make a pair or 2 shifter books that you would pick off of those shelves like we do for Bingo.)

We would flip 1 card a week. How the cards are flipped would be determined by the Game Master *looks at the lovely mods*. I can think of two ways to do it.

1. We have so many cards and each one has number and the handsome Mr. Randomizer picks the card number each week.

or

2. Each team picks what new card they want to flip each week. (I would say still having the cards numbered so a team could just say... "Hey beautiful Game Master, please flip card #4 for Team 1.")

At this point, I'm unsure how to proceed. I think it would be easiest to keep the cards face up once it has been put in play, instead of flipping two at a time like you do in the game and unflipping them when you don't have a pair.

I think what I'm trying to say is that once a card is flipped, it stays face up. Blah.... Brain not working.... I can't figure out how to explain it right now.....

To Win...

Say each team has 20 cards, which is 10 pairs. We could say that in order to win, everyone on a team has to read/rate/review 4 pairs. So, whichever team has done all that and made 4 pairs first would win. (Example: Say a team won in 10 rounds. That means that 8 of the books they read were pairs. 2 shifter books, 2 5-star books, etc.)

Anyways.... that's my idea. It kind of made sense in my head. Just thought I'd throw it out there.

message 265: by Judithe, Soap Operas never end.... (new)

Judithe | 6566 comments Interesting! I play a similar type of game with my students (with words, not books or playing cards). Can see the possibilities in this. We'll keep working on it, and see what comes up. Expect to hear from us...*wink*

Steph (angel4492) | 32697 comments Yeah, what Judithe said. ;)

message 267: by Alyssa (new)

Alyssa (lyssad87) | 974 comments Ooooooh!!!! I think I remember what the game is called. It's called Memory. (I think.)

message 268: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32697 comments Hubby actually came up with a twist on BSB. I thought I'd share them here to get some feedback from our members. It would probably be more popular with those who are fast readers.

BSB 2.0:
1st team to have all players read, rate & review a book from the announced shelf get their stamp ... AND they are the only team that gets a stamp for that shelf. The game proceeds the same as it does now, except only one team would receive a stamp for each shelf.

Sandra | 25907 comments I think we'd have to do a separate game - Killer Bingo maybe. ROFL

message 273: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32697 comments Oh yeah! Concentration! You're right, Sandra.
WIKI: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concentr... says, "Concentration, also known as Memory, Pelmanism, Shinkei-suijaku, Pexeso or simply Pairs, is a card game in which all of the cards are laid face down on a surface and two cards are flipped face up over each turn." Lots of different names apparently.

LOL! Yeah, I told him that wouldn't fly for everyone. Maybe for R6 we could run two at the same time. People, as they sign-up, could state which they'd like to play - Regular BSB or Killer BSB. They'd play off of the same announcements, but their cards would be stamped differently. Hmmmmm .... >;)

That game would go on forever - Killer Bingo it is...

message 277: by Alyssa (new)

Alyssa (lyssad87) | 974 comments Maybe if there are very few people wanting to play Killer Bingo, each person could have their own card, or they could be teams of 2 or something.

Your Hubby has some crazy evil ideas, Steph. Hehe.

message 278: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32697 comments That's a nice twist too, Alyssa. Yes, yes he does. ;)

message 279: by Vivian (new)

Vivian (_vivian) | 1934 comments For killer bingo, would that mean the shelves are placed back into Mr. Randomizer each week or the other teams lose out all together on earning that stamp? Seems like it would be difficult to get bingo. It's kinda like tic tac toe and you'll end up with a cat's game. You might have to cycle through the shelves a couple times...

message 280: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32697 comments You're probably right, Vivian. I hadn't really thought it though, but rather shelved the idea since it seemed a little severe. It'd definitely need some tweaking before it were put into play.

For those who read quickly, maybe a round where two shelves are announced weekly would be fun. In that instance, game play would proceed exactly the same, but instead of just one shelf, another would be called around Wed or Thurs. Or, as Alyssa mentioned, running a simultaneous individual round. Dunno - just throwing out ideas off the top of my head.

message 281: by Josie (new)

Josie | 1967 comments What about a crossword challenge? You've probably thought about it and discounted already lol but here it is:

It would be a series crossword so you'd make a mini crossword (there are puzzle makers online) and the clues would be:

Across:
1.
A series about a group of shitkicker-wearing brothers

That was quite easy but you get the idea. So you'd read a book from the series and fill it in.
If you can't read one or you're up-to-date on the series then you could read another book.

For example for 1 Across:
Read a book from the series or another vampire PNR

I don't know, something like that... :P

Steph (angel4492) | 32697 comments Hi, ladies! First, welcome to the group, Anna Fae! :D
Second, thank you all for your suggestions.

Paranormal Characters ~ I have done something like this in another group, but maybe we could spice it up a bit.

Crossword ~ Hadn't thought about that actually and think it sounds like fun. We'll have to play around with the idea and see what we can conjure up.

Page Count ~ This is something that we haven't really done around SOS. We have had challenges or categories within challenge that focus on pg count, but not a tally for the year.

We like to try to create challenges that are different from those found in other groups, so a complete copy wouldn't be something we'd host here. But, we love hearing everyone's suggestions and finding ways to make them special to SOS.

message 283: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25907 comments Like some of these ideas ladies, keep em coming :)

As to page count, GR already does that in our stats, so I suppose we could compare stats at the end of the year.

Anna Fae, to find your stats go to your profile page and you'll see it listed just under your list of bookshelves - Cloud/Stats/More

message 284: by Kim (new)

Kim I have a suggestion. :) I am playing Bookshelf Bingo for the first time and I am loving it! I loved it so much, I created a reading game for my kids this summer. They are playing Battleshelf. It's basically battleship and to take a shot they have to read a book on the shelf in that spot. They are loving it and I think it would be fun to do as a team challenge on Goodreads!

You should! My kids love it! They are ages 13, 10, 8, 6, and 5. I let my 5 and 6 year olds cheat and read whatever book they want (usually Magic Tree House since they will be entering Kindergarten and 1st grade this year), but the rest of us read what's on the shelf. They can't wait to hear whether it's a hit or miss when they take a shot. :)

message 287: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32697 comments First, LOVE that idea, Kim! I'm thrilled you are enjoying BSB and happy it inspired you to create something for your family. What a great summer reading idea!

Second, WOW! You certainly have your hands full, yah? (5 kids; ages 13-5) I always dreamed of having a big family (5 is big for me; only me and my sis). Oh well, I'll leave it to wonder moms like you. ;)

I've actually been working on a challenge based off of Candy Land. We haven't decided if it'll be a team or individual challenge yet. My first draft of the board and rules is done, just need to tweak it a bit before sharing. Plus, BSB is still rockin' and rollin'.

Thanks for the sharing your idea. I love it!

message 288: by Angela (new)

Angela Hi everyone!! New to the group and I love challenges :) SouthPaw recommended the group to me, so I decided to join.
I created this one in my own group, but since I do not have a lot of members in my group, I was hoping to have it played here.

YAHTZEE CHALLENGE
RULES

Upper Section:
ONES:Read a book with a one word title or the word one in the title
TWOS:Read a book with a two word title or the word two in the title
THREES:Read a book with a three word title or the word three in the title
FOURS:Read a book with a four word title or the word four in the title
FIVES:Read a book with a five word title or the word five in the title
SIXES:Read a book with a six word title or the word six in the title
(For this section you can also use books in a series. Also certain variation of the number is fine: so for 2:two, twice, second)

When scoring add only the dice picked. So I use my 5's but I only got 3, after I read the five word titled book, I will give myself 15 points.

TOTAL SCORE:
BONUS: ADD 35 points if score is over 63 points
TOTAL:

LOWER SECTION:
3 OF A KIND(add total of all dice):Read three books by any author but must have the same letter in the beginning of their last name (for example if I choose A: Megan Abbott, Cecelia Aheren, or Dorothy Allison or can read all books by same author)
4 OF A KIND(add total of all dice):same rules as 3 of a kind but with four books
FULL HOUSE(25 points):Read two books by GR authors and three books by new authors/or their first book written (you can also flip this:two books by new authors and three by GR authors)
SM. STRAIGHT(30 points):Using your tbr, read 3 books in a row adjusting either the author, title, date added or rating (your choice)
LG. STRAIGHT(40 points):Same as SM STRAIGHT only read 4 books
YAHTZEE(score 50 points):Read ANY 5 books of your choice
CHANCE:Read a book with the word "chance" in it or two books with an author with a starting letter in their last name using the word CHANCE

TOTAL FOR UPPER SECTION:
TOTAL FOR LOWER SECTION:
GRAND TOTAL:

Just like with the real YAHTZEE you get three rolls, but you will have to remember which dice you are keeping and change the number of dice accordingly.
So:
1st roll, roll 5 dice:1 - 6 - 4 - 2 - 3
I am keeping all but the 6, so I will change the number of dice to 1
2cd roll: I got a 2 so now i have 1 - 4 - 2 - 3 - 2
I am going to roll again to see if I can get a 5 for a LG straight
Roll 3: got another 2, so final dice roll is 1 -4 -2 -3 -2
I am going to use my SM STRAIGHT for this roll or I could use my 2's

message 290: by Valerie ~ Val Hall ~ (last edited Nov 20, 2012 07:19AM) (new)

Valerie ~ Val Hall ~ | 9661 comments Maybe this one has already been made. I really liked to play it in the Dangerous Hero Addict Support Group made by Lady Danielle.

It's a yearly reading challenge.
You have to read 50 books from different geographic location around the world. Countries can be used more than once if it's a different city. Exception: for the US, you can only use state only once (otherwise it's too easy). The whole point is to spot dangerous heros naturally. Any genre.

A book away from an episode of hoarders (fidgit77) | 740 comments Do we have a challenge yet where we read books with the same names, like:

Fallen (Fallen, #1) by Lauren Kate Fallen by Celeste Bradley Fallen by David Maine

and

Ice by Sarah Beth Durst Ice by Linda Howard Ice by Anna Kavan

and

Silence (Hush, Hush, #3) by Becca Fitzpatrick Silence (Silence, #1) by Natasha Preston Silence by Ashley McNiel

I was just looking at my bookshelves and realizing I had quite a few duplicates in titles. If we don't have one, I sure could use one. :)

message 293: by Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) (last edited Jul 07, 2015 04:50PM) (new)

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) | 2179 comments I like the same title idea. Or at least a game where titles repeat one of the "big" words (as opposed to "small" words like a, an, a, of, in...). The entire title matching might make for unhappy readers reaching into genres they don't like in order to get their reads or happy readers who stretched their reading horizons (would depend on if liked the book or not).

Or even make it a chain type of team challenge. Where one person starts a title and next teammate has to start a title repeating a word of that title (or have starting member specify which word repeats for everyone -- probably easier for romance genre where you could say something like "Wicked" or "Desire"). Rotate who starts each week until all members of team have a turn. Or maybe all the team members start whatever book they want one week, then next week the word of title to chain gets picked from among thise starter books, then next week another starter book ...

Or even have miderstor/challenge leader pick a word that all teams have to start with. "Undead" "Vampire" "Werewolf" "Bite" "UnDead" "Deadly" "Ice" "Fallen" etc. then thr teams chain off who knows where from that one launching word. Or teams throw out books they might want to start with, mod/leader picks a word from each and throws it up to Mr, Randimizer.

message 294: by Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) (last edited Jul 07, 2015 04:51PM) (new)

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) | 2179 comments I actually popped into this thread to suggest a book title Mad Libs.

I could see it played individually where players are asked to find book titles providing x number of nouns, adjectives, body parts, etc. Then after chosen and read -- reveal the mad lib tale with blanks everyone fills in to make their tale.

I could see it played as a team where moderator or challenge leader would ask for the first noun/adverb/whatever, teams read books with appropriate titles then vote to see which word the team wants to fill in the blank. Repeat for next blank, then the end reward would be a mad lib tale with the team words posted in team or game thread.

Or even as a buddy game. Set the number of blanks that will be used. Each buddy without revealing the tale creates a mad lib with that number of blanks then tells their partner how many nouns, adjectives, etc. they need to read. Revealing when reads are over and words specified.

Could even vote 1st, 2nd, 3rd place on funniest or best for any of the variations. (Have a feeling the tentacle sex, slipstream and erotica readers will have some of the funniest ones.)
