Shannon C. Charlaine Harris is the author of the popular Sookie Sackhouse (aka Southern Vampire Chronicles) series as well as the Harper Connelly mysteries.

When I first read the Sackhouse series, I read the first few books and immediately rushed out the later books to keep reading. Couldn't put them down! Great world building and character development. Good mix of mystery, action, suspense and romance. Have you read this series? What did you like or dislike about it?

message 2: by Shannon (new)

Shannon C. Also, has anyone read the Harper Connelly series? I'm just trying it now and I'm almost done with book three. It's very different from Sookie. I didn't like book one mainly because Harper got on my nerves. I thought she was too needy and made some 'too stupid to live' type decisions that put her life in danger. But book two was good and book three is great. If you want to give the series a try, you can easily skip book one and start with book two. Book three I thought was as good as the better Sookie books.

Hands down my favorite UF series! Have been hooked ever since the first one called my name from Waldenbooks shelves in 2001. Even the weaker books in the series are still good! And, of course, DEAD TO THE WORLD is my favorite.

I read books 1 & 3 didn't love either of them. Never felt compelled to read the others. I don't like Harper at all and I'm not crazy about Tolliver either.

Carolyn F. I love the Sookie and Harper series and enjoyed the Aurora series. The Aurora Teagarden are murder mysteries with a tiny bit of romance. A totally different genre but I think Charlaine Harris did a great job. I loved the dated clothing descriptions - yes, I had a giant bow at the top of my pony tail - what of it!

Jen ~The dreamer~ I've read all of her series except for the Aurora Teagarten series. I loved Sookie the best, Harper was also a great read. I was sad to see that series end. I also enjoyed the Lily Bard series. I have the first 2 Aurora books at home on my TBR shelf.

The Lily Bard books are very good. But I tried 2 Aurora Teagarden books and couldn't finish either one.

Jess | 3721 comments I liked the Harper Connelly books, but Harper bugs me me a little

Nichole ~Bookaholic~ (nicholebookaholic) | 672 comments I just finished the last one....while I really like the series and for the most part Harper...she does bug me a bit too

Samantha Mullins (hixxup79) I loved the series 1-8 but Dead in the family was I'm sorry Boring for me.

never read the harper conelly series, I'm not to good with straight mysteries.

The Harper Connelly books aren't straight mysteries, she has the ability to find murdered people's bodies. But I just don't care for them.

Sookie books 1-9 were great, but I agree DEAD IN THE FAMILY (#10) was slow. DEAD AND GONE was VERY good. I loved that there was so much going on!

message 12: by Samantha (new)

Samantha Mullins (hixxup79) It's not number 10 it's number 9 because what they consider #9 is the complete short stories. Well at least to me that is not #9 in the series.

message 13: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 58 comments Love her! I did find Dead and Gone to be a bit rushed for me. And wasn't super crazy about the last Harper Connely book. But overall she is one of my favorite authors and I was reading her before the whole True Blood TV show. I keep putting off Dead in the Family because it's the last new Sookie for me to read and if I read it then I have to wait that much longer for the next one. Stupid I know. But I'm like saving it for a bit.

No, DEAD IN THE FAMILY is the 10th book in the series. Here are all 10 books in order:
Dead Until Dark (Sookie Stackhouse, #1) by Charlaine Harris , Living Dead in Dallas (Sookie Stackhouse, #2) by Charlaine Harris , Club Dead (Sookie Stackhouse, #3) by Charlaine Harris , Dead to the World (Sookie Stackhouse, #4) by Charlaine Harris , Dead as a Doornail (Sookie Stackhouse, #5) by Charlaine Harris , Definitely Dead (Sookie Stackhouse, #6) by Charlaine Harris , All Together Dead (Sookie Stackhouse, #7) by Charlaine Harris , From Dead to Worse (Sookie Stackhouse, #8) by Charlaine Harris , Dead and Gone (Sookie Stackhouse, #9) by Charlaine Harris and Dead in the Family (Sookie Stackhouse, #10) by Charlaine Harris . Did you miss one of them somehow? The short story collection is A Touch of Dead (Southern Vampire Mystery Short Stories) by Charlaine Harris .

Samantha Mullins (hixxup79) that's Right! I miscounted a book.

Nichole ~Bookaholic~ (nicholebookaholic) | 672 comments While I really like the SVM series as a whole, I was not crazy about book 9 or 10....I will probably read until the series ends....but not thrilled with how it is currently going (JMO...)

message 17: by Samantha (new)

Samantha Mullins (hixxup79) I didn't like 10 it bore me to death usually I can read a book in a day, but this one took me 2 weeks.

message 18: by Anna (new)

Anna (stregamari) I loved the Aurora Teagarden series, and the Lilly Bard series. It was great when Lilly and Jack showed up in Definitely Dead (i think it was that book), and how Sookie said about Lilly "she's pretty, but really needs to get out in the sun" or something about how pale she was

message 19: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. I like the Aurora books too Marisella.

message 20: by Anna (new)

Anna (stregamari) @Carolyn, I know this makes me sound like a creeper; but I was devastated when Martin died! I loved him, and I loved how he and Roe were so awesome with and for each other. Not that it didn't turn out okay, but that last scene in A Fool and His Honey (Aurora Teagarden, #6) by Charlaine Harris made me so upset I had to throw the book down. and then rant and rave to my husband, who just looks at me funny and says "well, it is just a book, you know". *sigh* tell me I'm not the only one who flipped!

message 21: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. I know Marisella - I loved him too. I know he was older but not that old where he kicks it from a heart attack. I thought they were a great couple, a great normal-ish couple.

message 23: by Anna (new)

Anna (stregamari) yay! thanks

message 24: by Anna (new)

Anna (stregamari) Is it my imagination, or does this writing seem different than the other sookie books? More carefully worded, re-explaining things.... I don't know why, but it didn't sound like Sookie talking

message 25: by Kenna (new)

Kenna (kennas) Interesting. I noticed the same thing too. I wonder if its not just because I have read so many other authors between Stackhouse books or if it really is different. Eric seems a bit different too. I wish I hadnt started the True Blood series because I cant get those people out of my head when I read the books. I see Anna Paquin when I read Sookie books now.

message 26: by Anna (new)

Anna (stregamari) I've never seen a trueblood episode. I rented the first season on dvd, and made the mistake of putting it in while the kids were around. Bad idea! :) and then just never had the chance again. they look really steamy, and don't seem to be much like the books

The show is not much like the books, but I have no trouble separating the 2 in mind. I really like both of them. Have been reading little things here & there about the new season of True Blood that's coming up and am getting a feeling that it just might be a little like DEAD TO THE WORLD, which is my favorite book. There is a very strong Eric story line, and witches are the thing for this season. Both of those things tend to point toward the book!

Sarah (sarah_anne) | 253 comments Melodie wrote: The show is not much like the books, but I have no trouble separating the 2 in mind. I really like both of them.

I have to say that I agree. The only characters that from the show that I think are similar to my idea of the characters from the book are Eric and Pam - but even then, it isn't a perfect match. I love the show, but it is a completely different animal than the books.

I'm thinking that the different tone might have something to do with all of the changes that we were told to expect with the next book. Sookie is definitely not the same light-hearted person at this point (though I don't think she could be after all that she's gone through).

message 29: by Anna (new)

Anna (stregamari) True. She couldn't be the same blythe and ignorant person she was at the beginning of dead until dark. She really was sweet, and tried to give everyone the benefit of the doubt, and wasn't good at dissembling. I guess covering up for murdering the bobcat girl taught her a lot :)

message 30: by Jess (new)

Jess | 3721 comments I do think of Anna when I read the books now, but I can still keep the books and the show separate. Mostly because they are so different.

message 31: by Kenna (new)

Kenna (kennas) The books and the show are two different beasts. It doesnt help the visualizations though now that they are putting show covers on the books.:/

message 33: by Mitzi (new)

Mitzi Taylor | 1 comments Hi! Have you guys heard that Mrs. Harris is only doing two more Sookie Stackhouse books? I'm not sure if that means after the one coming out in May plus 1 more or is there's gonna be 2 more after this one???

message 34: by Jess (new)

Jess | 3721 comments Mitzi I hadn't heard that info yet, but I'm not surprised.. it's a long series already. I remember her saying that she would end the series while it was still good so that the characters were still enjoyable.

message 35: by Anna (new)

Anna (stregamari) There are a few authors we should send that info to, there are some series I can think of that have gone on wayyy past their prime :)

Nichole ~Bookaholic~ (nicholebookaholic) | 672 comments I think I read somewhere that the series would end at book 12??? I could be wrong.....
