Duration: now – January 1, 2011
This challenge has been hosted in the past by Dana, and then spread over the net in various forms, now we're bringing it to RRRC. So what is the Chubby Chunkster Challenge, you'd ask? It's about reading those damn fat ass books that you've been avoiding, because, let's face it, short books work best for all the challenges, don't they? Well not in this case. And here are the rules for the 2010 Chubby Chunkster Challenge:
1. Definition of a Chunkster:
- A chunkster is 450 pages or more of fiction or nonfiction. A chunkster should be a challenge.
- If you read large type books your book will need to be 525 pages or more... The average large type book is 10-15% longer or more so I think that was a fair estimate.
[NOTE: if you read e-books, check the hardcover/paperback page count here on GR, it will give you the idea if the book counts]
2. The Rules:
- No audio books. AUDIOBOOKS DO COUNT
- Re-reads are fine, as long as you don't skim or skip sections.
- Short Stories and Essay collections will not be counted.
- Books may crossover with other challenges.
- You can join in anytime, but you have till the end of the year to read it all.
- You don't need to list your books ahead of time.
- Once you pick a level, that's it...you're committed to that level!
- When you post your updates, put page count by each chunkster.
- If you completed a level before the end of the year and you want to sign up again, you're more than welcome to do so.
3. You must pick a level of participation:
- The Chubby Chunkster - this option is for the reader who has a couple of large tomes on their TBR list, but really doesn't want to commit to much more than that. 3 books is all you need to finish this challenge.
- Do These Books Make my Butt Look Big? - this option is for the slightly heavier reader who wants to commit to 5 Chunksters over the remainder of the year.
- Mor-book-ly Obese - This is for the truly out of control chunkster. For this level of challenge you must commit to 8 chunksters OR three tomes of 800 pages or more. You know you want to.....go on and give in to your cravings.
- Too Big To Ignore Anymore - this option is for those chunksters on your TBR list (honor code folk, I don't have time to be the challenge police). You may select any number of books over 450 pages but you must LIST THEM ahead of time.
So anybody wants to join me on this one?
MOR-BOOK-LY OBESE challenge:
- Drums of Autumn .. Diana Gabaldon (was 1/2 way thru when started so listing but not counting as 3 tomes)6/27
(1) The Fiery Cross ... Diana Gabaldon 7/6 pgs 1443
(2) A Breath of Snow and Ashes .. Gabaldon 7/25 pgs 1359
(3) An Echo in the Bone .. Gabaldon 1/10 pages 833
finished a little late but done ...

Warning: Not for the faint-of-heart! Really hardcore challenge!
Inspired by my PNR challenge, I'm launching A Lifetime of Books Challenge. The goal is to read a book published for every year in your life. Still here reading?
Very basic rules: If you are in your 20's, you are given a year to complete it, in your 30's a year and a half, in your 40's 2 years. Add six months for every extra decade.
Your clock starts ticking the moment you posted your list.
Anybody up for the challenge?

2011

This one is on-going and life long. so far I've got 29/1001
Which is probably more (as I'm sure I've read a multitude of these in high school) but I'm only counting those that I remember. So while this list won't include the total list (too long) I'll post my progress and which books I've read and date them going forward.
Updated 8/15/2010:
total 32/1001
Lady Chatterley's Lover - DH Lawrence (7/9)
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy-Douglas Adams 8/15
Great Expectations-Charles Dickens 1/16/11

this one is basically just a personal challenge that I've wanted to do ever since getting completely addicted to Gilmore Girls. I'm a "Rory" in that I never leave home without a book or two in tow and I have always been envious of her extremely well rounded reading. I'm in the process of going episode by episode to get references and lists (even though I have a list according to WB I'm a stickler for details) besides there are other references that Lorelei or Richard or even Emily have read and I want to include those too. So I'll add a link to her list when I can and will update any progress on this one as I go!
Updated 6/29/2010
Rory Read books:
Reading Lolita in Tehran .. Azar Nafisi 6/28/2010
Northanger Abbey..Jane Austen 8/10/2010
Great Expectations..Charles Dickens 1/16/2011

I've never read all 6 of Jane's books and it's on my bucket list of things to do before I die. Once I'm done I'm sure I'll pick another author and read all of their books and move through them just like any other. but Jane was my first pick so there it is...
Pride and Prejudice - read every year on my birthday
Sense and Sensibility -read
Persuasion - read 2/2010
Mansfield Park (TBR)
Northanger Abbey 8/10/2010
Emma (TBR)

RRRC is proud to present its 1st Reading Tournament that will commence on the 15th of July 2010 and will run until the 15th of January 2011.
Inspired by the game The Longest Chain, the goal is to have the longest inter-connected list of read books by the end the Tournament.
There are Two Tracks, and you have a choice between two Relays for each Track. You can have two Tracks going on simultaneously.
Track One: You can either do Word Relay or Author Relay:
a) Word Relay: You can connect books by using a similar word that is in the preceding book’s title. Any word in the book’s title is acceptable except for the articles a, an and the, and any two-letter preposition (of, an, in, on, at, etc).
Example of a chain: Dark Lover; Dark Prince; Pleasure of a Dark Prince; The Pleasure Master; Master of the Night
b) Author Relay: Used the last letter of either the first or last name of the previous author to choose the next book.
Example of a chain: Kresley Cole; Rebecca York; Angela Knight; Tessa Dare; Elizabeth Lowell
Track Two: You can either do Title Relay or Copyright Year Relay:
a)Title Relay: This chain is based on the number of words in the title. You can go either up or down.
Ex: Hero At Large (3 words); Dead as a Doornail (4 words); Kiss of aDemon King (5 words); First Drop of Crimson (4 words)
b)Copyright Year Relay - This chain is based on the copyright year of books. You can go either up or down. Please use original copyright year only.
Ex: Up, Close and Dangerous (2007); DarkFever (2006); After Midnight (2005); Night Play (2004); If Angels Burn (2005)
Scoring:
Points are cumulative. First book is worth 5 pts, each succeeding book is 5 points more than the previous one.
Ex. Ist book – 5pts - 5pts
2nd book – 10pts - 15 pts
3rd book – 15pts - 30 pts
4th book - 20pts - 50 pts
You can continue with your chain as long as you can. If you hit a bump and want to start over, we will get the total of what you have so far, and then you start anew. We will get a final total once we’ve reached the tournaments end.
We will need you to post a start date and end date with each book read and there should be no overlapping. Books read can be used in other challenges outside of this tournament but not for both tracks.
Rereads are acceptable. Audiobooks are also allowed. A book over 400 pages will get an extra 5 points. By the nature of the tournament being point-based, I will discourage the use of under 100-pages novellas and/or graphic novels as entries.

SERIAL KILLER READER CHALLENGE
As requested, a series challenge. The duration of this challenge is one year from the sign-up date. You can cross challenge with other challenges, but within Serial Reader the books you list cannot repeat.
This one is monstrous, not for the faint of heart!!! In order to complete it officially, you'll have to read: 27+ books and 15+ different series. Yup, you're reading it right. But fear not, I'm willing to compromise: if you omit some of the subcategories and then call it quits - fine by me - you just won't be all that notorious then. Of course, you can post as you go, but be sure to sing up to set the start date.
So Serial Readers, are you up for the challenge?!
