Judithe | 6566 comments Leave it, and enjoy reading! Fix it when you're trying to decide which book to read next...
(I've "fixed" mine a few times while doing that...and pondering which book --and double checking on ANOTHER list--will help me come closer to finishing the most challenges, and fit my mood of the moment!)

Laura Lulu (lauralulu) | 1603 comments Sandra wrote: "LOL, I think whiny husbands are just as bad as whiny kids! But there's no camp for them!"

Whiny husbands are much worse than whiny kids. And they're much harder to get rid of.

And Judithe, I'm going to disagree with Sandra (sorry!) on Katie MacAlister & especially Mary Janice Davidson--a lot of people consider them Chick-Lit. They're contemporary & humorous, just with paranormal elements added. Paranormal Chick-Lit. :)

Go check out where people have them shelved--there are 111 people who have the 1st Queen Betsy (the Undead series) shelved as Chick-Lit.

Judithe | 6566 comments I'm going to disagree with... Hmmm...there's so much debate about what "Chick-Lit" is...

I was looking at more people's selections and one put a Charlaine Harris (Sookie) book there. I would never consider that Chick-lit despite my nebulous concept of what it is! Think I'll use the "shelved" category as my main guide! Thanks for the input Sandra and Laura Lulu!

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments So, I got curious and checked out Wiki. I'd previously referred to this post and love it. I'll include both links for you guys.

Per Wiki, Chick-Lit is:
Chick lit is genre fiction within women's fiction which addresses issues of modern women often humorously and lightheartedly.

The genre sells well, with chick lit titles topping bestseller lists and the creation of imprints devoted entirely to chick lit.

Although sometimes it includes romantic elements, women's fiction (including chick lit) is generally not considered a direct subcategory of the romance novel genre, because in chick lit the heroine's relationship with her family or friends may be just as important as her romantic relationships.

I would not classify "Sookie" as chick-lit. I do classify some bks as "paranormal chick-lit" though, as Laura mentioned above.

Frequently refer to this one: Wiki's Literary Genres breakdown
Wiki's Chick-Lit page

Sandra | 25908 comments Happy to be part of the discussion. I personally am not a chick-lit reader unless forced by a challenge.

message 56: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments I'm not typically into what I would call contemporary chick-lit, but I have enjoyed some PN-chick-lits. Nice to have a light, quick, funny read in between books sometimes (for me).

Judithe | 6566 comments I personally am not a chick-lit reader unless forced by a challenge
Same! Which is why I have this little problem to start with! LOL

So Steph, what is some good PN chick-lit? Unfortunately, I really don't like the Queen Betsy one (I think that's it...) and couldn't stand to buy a book just for a challenge....any others? Still trying to get ANYTHING @ the library...have an Evanovich in that one for now, and maybe able to get ahold of a Sophie Kinsella one, but not exactly my faves....

message 58: by Sandra J (last edited Jul 21, 2010 05:29AM) (new)

Sandra J Weaver (sandraweaver) | 145 comments I really enjoyed Undead and Unwed but gave up the series after the fourth book and don't miss it. I like humor in my books, but I'm not a huge fan of the chick-lit format. Linda Howard wrote two romantic suspense books with a chick-lit feel to them. To Die For and Drop Dead Gorgeous were very good. The protagonist is smart and funny, and the suspense is on the light side for Linda Howard. I don't think I've read any PNR chick-lit style books.

message 59: by Judithe, Soap Operas never end.... (new)

Judithe | 6566 comments Thanks for the info, Sandra! I'm still trying to see if I can get a copy of that without shelling out money for it, but I'll also check into the Linda Howard recs.

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments Judithe, I am reading the latest "Queen Betsy" book now and, even though I've read all the books of the series, I wouldn't recommend starting it. It's one of those that my OCDitis (and need to complete what I've started) is the only thing keeping me reading them.

So, some series I can recommend would be:
(I've read & liked)
* Jane Jameson by Molly Harper
* Broken Heart, OK by Michele Bardsley
* Southern Witch by Kimberly Frost
* Jane Madison by Mindy Klasky

Some GR friends have liked:
(I haven't read)
* Katie Chandler (Enchanted, Inc) by Shanna Swendon
* Jazz Tremaine by Linda Wisdom
* Dark Ones by Katie MacAlister
* Casa Dracula by Marta Acosta
* Immortality Bites by Michelle Rowen

Hope that helps.

Judithe | 6566 comments Thank you bunches and bunches! I'll do some checking and fine something that looks good to me! You're a lifesaver!

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments As the captain of this ship'o fools, (no offense indended, said with much love, of course) I've always got life preservers and jackets close whenever the need arises. hehe :) Hope you find one you like. They are usually quick, fluffy reads. Hopefully you'll find one that while making you LOL doesn't have a leading lady that drives you batty. They have a tendency to do that in some of these.

Judithe | 6566 comments I don't watch TV! LOL...seriously, that and I read fast, and always carry a book. That said, I am behind on housework (is anyone ever actually caught up?) and grading uni. papers....no books for me today until I finish reading that stuff. Sigh.)

Good luck! And yes, that's a great way to look it. Think of how satisfying it'll be when you're done ... until the next batch. LOL Sorry, couldn't resist.

I've been posting updates in my original post, are we suppose to make a new one?

message 87: by Steph, Serious series addict (last edited Jul 28, 2010 09:25PM) (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments I have been doing that also. Sorry, habit for me. Plus I deleted some stuff (book pics, etc) for the ones I've completed.

PS: Hope you like Black Dust Mambo. I loved that!

Judithe | 6566 comments Original posts is fine!

I've been doing that too (#2), and make a memo of the update date. I've also been deleting pics, etc when finished. Please mark clearly (either before or after the challenge name) when you completed it. (And don't delete that out later LOL!) I'd also love to see the number of books you read for it too!

I haven't been deleting pics as I'm only adding them after I read the book.

message 90: by Judithe, Soap Operas never end.... (new)

Judithe | 6566 comments No problem with that!

I usually post my pics when I make up challenge lists as it makes it "easier" to spot which challenge to cross off...so here, I'm deleting the pics so it's easier for me to see which I've completed. That is, however, just my personal preference, not a requirement.

Do what you like best!

message 91: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments I was working on my tweaks for #47, but realized it might play to closely to RRRCs monthlies or somewhere else I can't think. So, I'll just keep working on it until it's more original to share.

Yeah, I usually post picks on the individual challenges, but I also usually change my mind on some of the titles, which was why I was waiting in this challenge. It made sense to me at the time anyway. :)
