The same thing goes on in my office. As you said, it is the assumption I give a rat's ass about what they are talking about that irritates me.
We also have some office gossips and I marvel at what they find interesting and worth repeating, my stock response is "I'm sure if *person in question* wanted me to know that, they would tell me."
nice to be read... like a cheap book! I will be around a lot more in two days. It looks like I missed some heated hate, and mindful banter.
It's not my style either. But remember my theory that evil people don't know they are evil? Well, I just assume that they are not trying to purposefully irritate you and would hopefully cease and desist if alerted to their misbehavior.
The gossip I'm talking about in my office is the malicious, violation of trust kind, supplying me with private information about people I don't know.I am by no means perfect, I have co-workers who are friends and we chat about the people we work with and some of what we discuss would be embarassing if overheard.
that's some willpower you have though to have been able to restrain yourself from eavesdropping. i can't seem to turn it off. i'm constantly accidently listening to people's conversations in weird places (like waiting in line at walgreens), and then something they say will make me laugh and then it's all very awkward and embarassing.
