since Wednesday is the last day of June and that signals the end of the first half of the year - does anyone want to try for a continuation and do 288 for the year?

I currently have 4 books left to make my 144, so i'm in, if anyone else is...

message 2: by Judithe (new)

Judithe | 36 comments Lovely idea! As I started late (counting all only from June, and only know books bought this year and challenges from before that), I'm not sure it's doable for me, but I'll give it a shot as I'm pretty sure I'll hit 144 before the end of the year is too close!

yay!!

message 4: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) I would be in for this, but I have past this mark. I am now shooting for 500.

lol!! fair enough!

message 6: by Judithe (new)

Judithe | 36 comments Fantastic, Darcy!

So...post new goals! How far are you going for?

Ahh...wishing for early retirement! LOL...Think of how many more books I could read....maybe my TBR list would disappear (or maybe not...could discover even more books!)

message 7: by Vaughn (new)

Vaughn (tipsypixie) | 101 comments I am in! Finished my 144 at end of May, so well on target. Loving this challenge.

message 8: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) I would not be as far as I am, but I was unemployed for the first 5 months of the year and this is what I spent my time on when not job searching. Currently I am just over the 350 mark. But have slowed way down since working, the 500 will be a strech now.

message 9: by Mary (new)

Mary (madamefifi) Wow. I know I will read more than 144 this year, but doubling it...impossible, I think. Good luck to those who take up the gauntlet!

message 10: by Connie (new)

Connie (grundig) | 57 comments I must be a slow reader because I'm not even halfway to the 144 books. I going to stick to the orginal 144 books.

message 11: by Jen (new)

Jen | 287 comments that's crazy! Do you all read short teen books or something? I'm barely keeping on pace of 12 a month!

message 12: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) For me I read a mix of things. I do read YA books, but also there are lots of others that are anywhere from 300-600 pages long. I just read fast and had lots of free time earlier in the year.

message 13: by Vaughn (new)

Vaughn (tipsypixie) | 101 comments I read fast and average a book a day. Early mornings, in the car (as a passenger) to and from work, lunch break and then evenings. If there is not much happening at the weekend I can usually squeeze in another one or two. My kids are grown up and I do not watch TV. Plenty of time to read.

message 14: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 776 comments Mod
most of mine are 200-300 pages but i work shift work and weekends...so at night when its quiet, I can easily read a book or two and weekends (12 hour shifts) - I can read 2-3...plus i normally read upwards of 2-3 hours a day (more when I want to procrasinate doing schoolwork!)

message 15: by Mel W (new)

Mel W (melw) I need to update my books read thread but I know I'm close to 144 read already this year, so I'll give doubling it a go :)

message 16: by Afsana (new)

Afsana (afsanaz) I will hit 144 as am on 111/112 at present but 288 mwill be a stretch but am hapy to give it a go!!

message 17: by Jennifer C (new)

Jennifer C Hitting the 144 is going to be a stretch for me so I am going to take a pass on this one. Good luck to those of you who can do it. I am quite envious. :)

message 18: by Kellyyyylynne (new)

Kellyyyylynne I will have to pass on this one but good for you all who have already met the challenge and are moving on. I won't likely meet this challenge as I have decided to go back to school, and was already behind but normally I read more during the summer, that won't happen now. Not sure what I was thinking but I will still find time to get some books in.

Good luck to you all!

message 19: by Ann aka Iftcan (new)

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) | 394 comments Well, I'm already at 177 for the year. So I'm up for the 288.

Some days I read 2 or 3 a day. Others I might not get through 1. Depends on what's going on in the real world.

My hubby has just taken early retirement, so he's demanding a bit more of my time, but even so, I am still a book-a-holic. If I don't read for at least an hour or so before I go to bed I can't sleep. Well, sometimes I still can't sleep, but not reading makes it worse.

message 20: by Jackie (new)

Jackie Lane (jaxlane) | 126 comments I will stick with the 144 and be lucky to make 100, but for me, it isn't a contest, I just want to see how many books I generally read in a year.

Good luck to all of you who are doing 288 or more.

message 21: by Vaughn (new)

Vaughn (tipsypixie) | 101 comments I dont look at it as a contest, but as a personal challenge. This is the first time I have logged my reading and I have surprised myself at how many books I get through each month.

I think I am reading about the same amount as I would without the challenge, the only difference is I am making myself finish the really bad ones so I can log them for the 144 challenge, previously I would have just chucked them away with a mental note note to buy anything else from that particular author.

My biggest difficulty is not to re-read books I have already logged during the first 6 months. I have probably spent more money on books this year than previously. Thank god for Amazon Prime, at least it doesn't cost me carriage each time I order.

Dee (austhokie) | 776 comments Mod
its not really a contest for me, with others, but i like pushing myself to see how far I cna go (does that make sense?) I've never really tracked how many books I read, but it doesn't surprise me that i'm already nearly at 144

message 23: by Journeywoman (new)

Journeywoman | 36 comments No.

Even though I'm fairly certain I'll make 144--I'm proud to make 144--and see how far I get.

Good luck.

Kelly Flanagan | 224 comments Yes!
I'm at book 108!

message 25: by Deidre (new)

Deidre (historicalbooklover) | 117 comments I am half way thru my 144th book =) So count me in for 288.

message 26: by Ann aka Iftcan (new)

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) | 394 comments I don't view this as a contest either. I've never kept track of how many books I've read before, so the only "contest" part of this is trying to remember to put the books that I've read into the data-base. I actually feel like this year I've read FEWER books than normal. Partly because of what's going on with my husband (he decided to take early retirement) and I've had to do a ton of paperwork with him for that. Partly because of a few other things that were going on during the first part of the year.

I know I won't have any trouble making the 288. Its just a "see how many books I read" thing for me.

message 27: by Lisa S (new)

Lisa S (kasey_k_fan) Sure, I'm up for this. I just finished number 102, so I'll give it a go.

i'm halfway through 143 and 144...with 145, 146, 147 and 148 started (I have some serious book ADD right now)...

message 31: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. I'll do it - I just hit 155 so hopefully if nothing major comes up I'll make it!

message 32: by Shay (new)

Shay | 330 comments I'm in, I just started counting in mid-June, so I'm behind. I usually read about 700-900 books a year, so I should be able to do it. I'm in a really bad reading slump right now. I think I only finished 2 books in about 6 days. Maybe this will be a kick in the behind for me to get back on track.

message 33: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. Yikes Shay - I'm jealous

message 34: by Shay (new)

Shay | 330 comments Carolyn, the only reason I manage it is because I have insomnia. So, most nights I only get about 4-5 hours of sleep. I get up everyday about 4-4:30 so I usually get a book read before the kids get up.

message 35: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. Well, I wouldn't want the insomnia, I just would love to read that many books!

message 36: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) Carolyn F. wrote: "Well, I wouldn't want the insomnia, I just would love to read that many books!"

Me too, then maybe my TBR pile would start to go down. lol

4-5 hours...lol, that's my standard sleep pattern...I would kill for more!

I know! Then my husband would shut his trap - :)

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) | 158 comments I'm in for 200 but no more than that.

message 40: by Shay (new)

Shay | 330 comments Actually, the more you read, the bigger the pile. I have about 80 library books in the stack, plus all of the books I bought. If I have any less than 50 books I start panicking because I'm afraid I'll run out of stuff to read. (If I'm reading a lot, 50 is only about 2 1/2 weeks). So, I usually have about 100-120 books, minimum.

message 41: by Pam (new)

Pam (pammylee76) Congrats to those who have achieved the 144 book goal!

message 42: by Gina (new)

Gina (ginrobi) | 84 comments Darcy, I damn near fell off my chair. Did you post 350? Holy smokes, girl!!! LOL! That is so totally awesome! I'm still trying to beat my personal record of over 150 a couple of years ago. If I make my 144 this year, I'll be happier than a pig in sh... uh, slop.

message 43: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) Gina, I don't think that I will ever hit this high again, as I hope to never be unemployed, and that is the main reason the count was so high. At the rate I am going I will hit 400 by the end of the month. But them will slow waaaaay down as I am going to get a second job, so the free time will be a lot less. :(

Well, that does makes sense, doesn't it? I've never been in your boat, but when the kids were babies, I wasn't at work as often as when before I had them. While they slept, I read. Unfortunately, I wasn't keeping track of my reading back then. It was before I discovered Shelfari, and then Goodreads. I've basically abandonned Shelfari, LOL! I love it here so much! It's my main go-to for may reasons now.

message 45: by Samantha (new)

Samantha I'm down with 288 books :)

message 46: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (vanessamc) I finally finished my 144 a few days ago, and am moving steadily along. I don't know if I'll make 288, but I certainly will try and get as much done as I can.

Dee (austhokie) | 776 comments Mod
I edited the title of the thread, but I figured we could post here, if you are aiming for 288 or more...personally I hit 202 over the weekend (I finished up 5 books that I had in progress - 2 audiobooks and 3 normal books)

message 48: by Lisa S (new)

Lisa S (kasey_k_fan) I have 14 more on the original challenge then I'll be starting on this one.

message 49: by Ann aka Iftcan (new)

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) | 394 comments I'm over 200 books too--but don't remember if its 204, 205 or 206. Well, its probably all of those, plus 207, 208 and 209. I have GOT to stop getting 7 or 8 books going at one time. I need to fi nish off some of the ones that I have started.
