Sandra | 25908 comments Being a short hop across the ditch, I've been a couple of times to NZ. Auckland is a very pretty place and would be a good choice to retire to Philip.

Sallie(GeorgiaGirl) (shuga) | 1143 comments I live in SE Illinois (Lawrenceville) near Evansville Indiana...Born in Las Vegas, Nevada (in a hospital not out of slot machine)..grew up in Florida & Georgia - Georgia is home because that is where I left my heart....Would like to retire in Maine - love the weather - the best of both worlds water & mountains.

Ihad to do a report for a humanities class in college on living conditions there and since it's just sounded like an awesome place to live.

No doubt. I love the NZ and AU accents too. :)

Sandra | 25908 comments Accent, what accent? lol.

Sandra wrote: "Sounds tough, no wonder you want to stay in British Colombia, I'm guessing the weather is better there."

Yes, the weather is far more temprate here, and it is nice that the way it rains here you can still get out and do things, you're not locked inside.

But if it were not for my Hubby I would still be in Yellowknife, the people are far nicer there! Not to mention that I grew up in Ontario and I love winter sports! problem the only winter sport you can do outside in BC is downhill skiing.. and skating has to be inside! BLECK!

Steph (angel4492) | 32697 comments Sandra wrote: "Accent, what accent? lol."

LOL! It used to crack me up when we were living there and people (locals) would comment on our accent, I would tell them I love theirs and they would say, "What? We don't have an accent!" They used to get me to say certain words to see if they were said the same as in AU. Too funny!

message 58: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25908 comments Did they really get you to say words? We usually only do that to kiwis - fish & chups - or six always comes out as sex!

What did they get you to say?

message 59: by Steph, Serious series addict (last edited Jul 21, 2010 07:57PM) (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32697 comments All kinds of stuff. Like: route ("root" or "rowt"). Then they had me spell a bunch of stuff, theater v. theatre and humor v. humour. They were obsessed. It was at a friend's bday party, every one of her friends would stop and say, "Ohhhhhh, you're from the US??? Can you talk to me for a bit?"

message 60: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25908 comments lol. They must have liked you ;)

message 61: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32697 comments I'd like to think so, but might'a just been my US southern girl accent that drew them to me, not my winning personality. LOL It was fun either way though, they had me laughin'.

message 62: by Carson (new)

Carson T (carsont) Where are you living now?

Adele (mooturtil) | 23 comments Where are you living now? melbourne, victoria, australia
Where are you originally from? quite boring, really i'm from melbourne, grew up here, still live in my childhood home.
Where would you like to retire to? probaly melbourne. really i just want to retire somewhere nice, maybe albury(on the border of NSW and VIC but on the NSW side) that's a pretty town (what am i saying it's like a city!)

message 64: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32697 comments Somewhere cold...very very cold...or out in the woods in a cabin ^.^ HK, my hubby wants to retire somewhere just like that, but me? I want somewhere close to the ocean with views of nearby mountains and temps that will keep my toes from freezing off. LOL!

message 65: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25908 comments I'm with you Steph, but add in a little bush (not outback but green).

LOL. Del sorry last time I was in Albury, a couple of yrs ago, it was just a big country town. I was running a conference there and I felt safe walking around at night by myself. Wouldn't like to do that in a city.

message 66: by Adele (new)

Adele (mooturtil) | 23 comments it's not like melbourne, r geelong it's smaller than both. it's just bigger than your normal country town now. it has suburbs.that to me classifies it a city. and yeah it's still safe to walk around at night. that's why i love it so much.

message 67: by Jayded (new)

Jayded Where are you living now? South Carolina

Where are you originally from? Grew up in the Bahamas

Where would you like to retire to? I don't think I'll be going anywhere, but would love to retire to England.

message 68: by Literary Ames (new)

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 1854 comments Goodness, you know it's cold in England, right Jeanine? I don't want you to die of pneumonia not long after you step foot on English soil. :)

Where are you living now? Drab, old and very wet England. Where the hell did summer go?

Where are you originally from? England.

Where would you like to retire? Unsure. Perhaps Mahe (island) in the Seychelles. I stayed there with friends for a month over Xmas 12 years ago. Beautiful place. I never thought the pictures in brochures and magazines were real but they are! Though it was a bit strange spending Xmas in a place so hot they can't have real Xmas trees.

message 69: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25908 comments I couldn't imagine having a cold xmas!

It's usually hot, hot, hot here chrissy day. Salads, seafood or slow roasted meats (outside so as not to heat up the house) to go with those yummy salads - rubbing it in or what Ames!!! LOL.

message 70: by Jayded (new)

Jayded Ames, I lived in Newmarket for four years. Of course it was during one of the worst heat waves in the history of the country. I was there from 1987-1991. I think 1990 was a record breaker. There were water restrictions, the works. But yes, I do know it gets cold. The wind cuts right through to your bones. But I still like it there.

message 71: by Literary Ames (new)

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 1854 comments Jeanine, there's no helping you. You're nuts :) And Sandra, that was just plain mean! Jealousy, jealousy, jealousy! Lol!

message 72: by Jayded (new)

Jayded Ames, it's more of a culture thing than a weather. I grew up in the Bahamas which has a very strong British influence. I miss McVities and elastoplast, and driving on the left darn it lol and there's a certain attitude that is just so different. I know it seems weird saying I grew up in the Bahamas so I want to live in England, but...

Although I will say, if I could afford a house on the Island my father lives on I'd retire there in a heart beat. Forget England LOL

message 73: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25908 comments Jeanine, what about coming my way. Sun, sand and we drive on the left; sorry no McVities but we do have elastoplast! And every BBC production is always played here too. Best of both worlds. LOL. Go Aus! Yay!

message 74: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32697 comments LOL Go Oz!

message 75: by Literary Ames (new)

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 1854 comments Oh, I see. Yes, there are definitely some items I would miss if I moved abroad. Lol, Sandra's pimping out her country!

message 76: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25908 comments There's plenty here to go around. Just slip the money on top of the fridge. LOL.

I Agree. i'm going around australia before i even venture out of the country. soo much to see. i do it in week blocks at a time. however i have re thought my retirement and like to become a grey nomad!! however that also my change, but i'll stick ti that for now.

Where are you originally from? I was born in a A Kibutz (an Israeli form of a collective community) near the Kineret (Sea of Galilee) at the north of Israel.

Where would you like to retire to? Hhmmm... can i go back in time to 1800'ish? just kidding, I'll stay in Israel but would love to move up north again and have a big house with a yard and a porch, where i can read my books in my beautiful garden... *sigh*

message 84: by Judithe, Soap Operas never end.... (new)

Judithe | 6566 comments Ahh...I'm right there with you, Shay, in wanting a big house (add lots of bookshelves in it...I'm old-fashioned), yard, porch, garden (and a pot of coffee to sip at while reading)...sounds heavenly!

GinBee (jennymbee) | 34 comments Where are you living now? A tiny village in rural Cumbria, England

Where are you originally from? Same tiny village in Cumbria, England. (moved back after a few years away)

Where would you like to retire? I have no idea really but somewhere a little warmer than here might be nice :)

message 88: by Ruby (new)

Ruby Hollyberry | 8 comments Originally from central NC.

Currently back in central after years of living at the beach and in the mountains (all in NC).

Most of my friends are in New England at present and want us to go there, but we are thinking of Portland, OR area as a possible. Must not be so hot and sunny as here (tired of almost six months of 90 degree plus days) and must have NO dog breed restrictions as our pit bulls are non-negotiable. Any suggestions? In New England we have friends from MA to NY to NJ to VT to CT.

twinfish2 | 3 comments I live in Muncie Indiana

I grew up in Frankfort Illinois, about 45 minutes south of Chicago.

Where I would retire to? If I can find a place that it is always fall. I hate to be hot or cold. I would like the temp. to be between 50 and 75 all year. Does anyone know of such a place. Yeah, I haven't found it. Yet.

message 90: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25908 comments Good luck Jen on finding somewhere warmer!

Good luck Ruby on finding the right spot in New England!

and finally Good Luck twinfish2 on finding a perpetual fall!

All good ambitions, although I don't think I could give up the promise of a great summer, just a magical time of year here in Sydney.

Kerstin | 862 comments Where are you living now? Sunny Australia

Where are you originally from? Germany

Where would you like to retire to? I know a few of you might think I'm nuts, but I'd love to go back to the UK. I lived there for a couple of years and loved it! Then again, retiring is still a long time off and I might just find another spot in our (hopefully) upcoming travels that I fall in love with. It has to have four seasons though, with snow in winter, I do miss a white christmas over here :)

message 92: by Judithe, Soap Operas never end.... (new)

Judithe | 6566 comments A long, hot summer is hopefully coming to a close, so I'm inclined to want a place with lovely fall temperatures all year round...but I don't think I could really give up having four seasons, either! Kerstin, hope you can enjoy a white Christmas again sometime!!

message 93: by Kerstin (new)

Kerstin | 862 comments We did head back to Germany a couple of times over christmas to spend it with my family, so I don't have to miss out on it all the time, but this year it will be another hot one on the beach.
I do understand that you would enjoy fall all year round; never too hot or cold and the trees all shades of red and yellow... beautiful!

message 94: by Judithe, Soap Operas never end.... (new)

Judithe | 6566 comments :)

message 95: by Literary Ames (new)

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 1854 comments A white Christmas -something that is always a major source of betting but which is rarely seen in England. Must be at least 10 years since we've had one. :(

message 96: by Kerstin (last edited Sep 14, 2010 06:37PM) (new)

Kerstin | 862 comments The same goes for Germany Amy, but I was lucky last time I visited:).
I remember the one Xmas I spent in England was cold but sunny. We did have a white New Years though; that must have been about 8 years ago...

message 97: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25908 comments You guys are making me cold just thinking about it. Give me a lovely sunny, warm Chrissie every time. LOL.

message 98: by Judithe, Soap Operas never end.... (new)

Judithe | 6566 comments LOL! But there is something magical about a blanket of snow along with Christmas! It's what I hope for every year...

message 99: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25908 comments The only way to get a blanket of snow at Christmas is to go overseas. LOL. Sorry, wouldn't like a white Chrissie - no way, no how!

message 100: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32697 comments LOL! An Aussie Christmas just isn't the same without sunshine and shrimp, yah, Sandra? Having experienced both warm and snowy Christmases, I would say that warm Xmas is better b/c I'm not too frozen to fully enjoy it. Although looking out the window on Xmas day and seeing everything all white is beautiful. Oh, never mind, I don't know which I prefer. LOL!
