I started blogging about six years ago on a UK site called The Good library Blog, mainly because I was so sick of my own so-called "profession" that if I hadn't vented my frustrations I'd probably have had a mid-life crisis.
Anyway, instead of being a good little boy I spent five hilarious years thrashing librarianship on a fortnightly basis, saying wonderfully irreverent things like "senior library management should be shot out of the USS Enterprise's shuttlebay doors into deepest space in their underpants" and "Ed Vaizey [UK minister of culture/libraries] was about as fit for his job as Jabba the Hut was to run the Triathlon..."
And the weird thing was, that was how I came to be published and have my book appear on Radio 4's "A Good Read!"
You see, I didn't know hat one of my fellow contributors was starting a publishing house (Chaplin Books) and she was reading all this! Nor did I know that the Good Library Blog's webmaster, Tim Coates, was the former boss of WH Smith (MAJOR UK retail chain) and Waterstones (major bookstore chain like Borders)...
Chaplin Books published me, Tim Coates got invited on "A Good Read" and promoted my book (thanks again, Tim), and it would never, ever have happened if I'd done the conventional thing...
Now, this may seem like a fairy story, and indeed the odds against it all happening were enormous, but I'd say the main thing is to be true to yourself and not, of course, descend into invective or abuse. I stuck the skewer into librarianship with subtlety and finesse (compared their professional body to the people's Front of Judea in "Life of Brian" on one occasion...) and Chaplin Books liked what they read.
The rest of the story, how I resurrected a character from "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," got a vampire flatmate (metaphorically speaking), got into an online correspondence with a great Hollywood actress, crossed the States by Greyhound Bus to meet her (I'm autistic, by the way as well...) and what happened then...
Well, you'll need to read my book to find out, but yes, blogs can be worthwhile.
P.S. I have also just become a blogger for the "The Huffington Post (UK)." Pardon me if it seems I'm blowing my trumpet a bit much, but believe me, this has been just as much a shock for me as it would be if it happened to you!
