I've been thinking of picking up the Steve Jobs book...but I'm nervous I will not like Steve Jobs the person...and I want to. I don't read a lot of biographies for that reason.

From what I have heard about him I probably wouldn't read the Steve Jobs book if you want to like him...

I agree. He attracts trouble like a magnet, but it sure makes for some entertaining reading!

My thought was that since he didn't grow up in a stable situation, he doesn't know how to appreciate stability, so he essentially does attract it. I dunno, my mother-in-law is really into self-help, and as a by product, I've started picking apart fictional characters.

Just in general. They all have or had some hardship that drives them.

I like that each book deals with a different set of supernatural baddies. Sure, the premise is pretty standard--poor Harry gets bashed and battered on a regular basis, but always manages to get himself out of dangerous, tricky situations, sometimes by pure luck alone rather than wizardly skills. But, there is just something very endearing about him and the humour never grows stale.

As the series continues the central plot changes and gets more and more tied into the the "what's been going on in the background all along?" plot line. I guess it's that I'm really caught up in these books, I like them a lot. By the time you get to Turn Coat and then Changes of course there's big changes.

Yes. You can read and enjoy each book by it's self, but it's when you read the series that you get all the deep plotlines. That makes the series all the more interesting and you want more and more.

just finished two of Catherynne M. Valente;s books. Both Deathless and The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making both reinforced my love of her lyrical style. Unsure what to start next!

Just started reading Warbreaker by Brandon Sanderson. So far, so good. A magic system based on colours and Breath is very intriguing.

Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. The good news is the paper version has lovely scalloped edges to the pages, so it puts you in mind of an ancient diary or manuscript.

Mark, I'm not that far into yet but I liked Eye of the World and like it so far. From what I remember when I read it before the plot starts to pick up. The returning characters start getting their own arcs. More characters come in. Different lands and cultures are introduced. You learn more about elements of the first book. Or maybe this is later books?...

I'm currently a little under halfway through Black Lung Captain by Chris Wooding. I'm liking it well enough... but I'm a little bit sad that I'm not loving it.

Colleen, I have some issues with Frey, like wanting to knock some sense into him. Trinica has actually grown on me. Very conflicted characters and a dreary universe. But still, I'm enjoying it.

I like the characters well enough, and the little character interactions and bits of growth are some of the things I'm enjoying the most. That and the little quirks of wry humor.

There's just something about it, though... I don't know if it's the writing style or what, but I feel a distance. Like, I like the characters, but I'm not really connecting with any of them. I feel more like I'm watching it than experiencing it - if that makes sense.

I just started The Great Hunt, apparently because I like punishment.

I'm also trying to polish off Cursor's Fury and The Sea-Hawk. The last couple of days have been nice and slow at work, and there is a free PDF version of the Sea Hawk, so that's been my entertainment for the week. I've got The Steel Remains as my current audio book and I am loving it! Ringil is super bad-ass.

I like Crake, I think he's really well-done. Frey initially started out a bit too much like Mal Reynolds for me, but he defined himself, especially with the (view spoiler)[breaking into the monastery scene (hide spoiler)].

Finished Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and now continuing on with Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

I almost started 11/22/63 but I kept to my word of finishing up the Harry Potter series.

Chelsea, If your not big on The Great Hunt you might want to jump ship now. I greatly liked the first 5 or 6 books, but after that the series (in my opinion of course) takes a huge nose dive resembling a 757 doing a wheels up rudderless landing in a swamp.

Chelsea, are you finding The Great Hunt to be a bit slower than you expected? I'm having that problem. This is a reread for me of a series I started a long time ago. And I remember the story picking up. But so far it seems like chapter after chapter of not going anywhere.

I'm not ready to jump ship quite yet. I am absolutely determined to be ready to read the last book when it comes out late next year.
