I love Glokta. I think he's probably one of the best fantasy characters from the last ten years. I've got that on audio too. I love the job the narrator does with all the voices! As soon as I'm done listening to Leviathan Wakes I'm going to finish that one.

He was a favorite of mine, too!

S Pearlyan (purplewidow) | 84 comments I just started with The Omen Machine.
Aim is to finish it in next 2 days (Purely because I have to return it to Library :P )
I loved Sword of Truth series when it started. But somewhere in Middle, I lost interest a bit. Too much preaching by TG??
Considering the reviews, I don't have high hopes with it. But then again, Its supposed to be about Richard and Kahlan. So I would postpone everything for next 2 days and finish it.

Was just thinking about how I wanted to have my library's copy of The Name of the Wind.
The Name of the Wind (Kingkiller Chronicle, #1) by Patrick Rothfuss

I don't own a copy, and that's the one I fell in love with.

Currently reading Prince of Thorns, as part of FBC read. On Ch. 4 and enjoying.

Glokta just gets better and better as the books go on. Enjoy!

Cheryl Landmark (clandmark) | 861 comments I'm about halfway through The Magician's Apprentice by Trudi Canavan, and I have to say I'm a little disappointed. While the writing is acceptable, the plot and characters are failing to really grab me and the pacing seems rather plodding and boring so far. I'm hoping it picks up and gets better in the second half. I do still plan on reading the first book in her Black Magicians trilogy.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) For a mixture of (alleged) October-spookiness and nostalgia, I'm reading Thirst No.1: The Last Vampire, Black Blood and Red Dice by Christopher Pike (f/k/a The Last Vampire series).

I plan on reading the whole series through, and then a few ghost stories, and maybe that Sprunk book for the SFFBC totalitarian regime.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) I've had my eye on the Pike book, Colleen. I'll look out for your review when you finish it.

Brett (battlinjack) | 114 comments Reading Play Dead Dog Days 4 by John Levitt. Number 4 in his Dog Days series and it's as fun as the others.

A have started Bloodlands by Christine Cody which is a western vampire fantasy. Different.

What should I read next? Beyond the Shadows, A Brother's Price, The Erevis Cale Trilogy or Red Seas Under Red Skies?

How can you not put volume 3 of a trilogy first? ... don't you want to know the dramatic conclusion?

I'll reserve judgment from my fellow FA'ers who like that author, but I am NOT a fan of his.

You're right, I must know the conclusion! Beyond the Shadows will be next. Thanks Carol!

message 3322: by Chelsea (new)

Chelsea (rocktopusjones) | 338 comments I just thought MHI was horrendous. Horrendous enough never to ever pick up anything by that author ever again.

I liked the first two books of Night Angel, but you can definitely tell they're Weeks' first books. The plots are a little disjointed and the action skips around between unconnected groups of characters. I'm going to give the whole trilogy a re-read next year to see if I can get a better grip on the plot.

Too bad, you did not like the Crystal Shard. I guess not everyone likes a book that is light, but I find there is a lot one can learn from Drizzt, which other characters in other books often cannot be learned from.

Sharon Michael | 572 comments Good haul from the library trip yesterday. Finished Trio of Sorcerylast night. Very good, though I'm not usually a short story/novelette person but these are three from her urban fantasy series, all of which I've enjoyed.

Began Catching Fire 2nd book in the Hunger Games series this morning but not far into that yet. With several more waiting should be a good week.

First 50 pages and I'm already finding it hard to read. I ended up assembling furniture that was supposed to be done by flatmate, just to avoid reading it.
Writing style is soooo different. It's as if some other person is taking notes. And Bad note-taking.

Really? I heart the MHI series. I think its lots of fun.

Hard Magic isn't the same style but it does have a lot of guns like the first one.

I'm weird though. I find I have contrasting tastes with the majority at times, since I wasn't all that crazy about Hounded, either.

message 3337: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (_shannon) | 289 comments Carmen- If you love the rich writing in Daughter of Smoke and Bone, I'm sure you will like Lips Touch. I was sceptical about reading Lips Touch because I don't typically like short stories, or books with illustrations...but I absolutely loved all three stories and the illustrations that went with them. Amazing stuff.

Valerie (versusthesiren) | 357 comments Tracy wrote: "Loved Hunger Games, Catching Fire was ok but I was really disappointed in Mockingjay."

I'm the opposite - I thought the first two books were pretty meh, but I loved Mockingjay.

message 3341: by Traci (new)

Traci I found Hunger Games to be surprisingly good, I liked Catching Fire but felt like it was almost a remake of the first and Mockingjay imo didn't fit.

Finished Kushiel's Avatar and although I liked it and the series has become a favorite I have to gripe (view spoiler) Now that I got that off my chest. :) I'm starting Kushiel's Scion next. Thought about giving it a break but I'm looking forward to Imriel's story.

message 3342: by Susinok (new)

Susinok I started Before They Are Hanged by Joe Abercrombie.

Before They Are Hanged (The First Law, #2) by Joe Abercrombie

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) I finished Zero Sight. I would recommend it if you're looking for an edgy coming of age with a mage in training. I like the balance of science and magic, and the snarky humor.

Zero Sight (Zero Sight Series, Book 1) by B. Justin Shier

message 3344: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Michael | 572 comments Began The Blade Itself yesterday but ended up putting it down. Too grim and unless there are more (and different type) characters introduced later it just isn't anything I actually want to read. I am definitely a character-driven reader and unfortunately I found all of the characters introduced to be *people* that I would avoid like the plague in real life.

Not something I find entertaining.

message 3345: by Chelsea (new)

Chelsea (rocktopusjones) | 338 comments Just started Beyond the Shadows and the Erevis Cale trilogy by Paul Kemp, which is (so far) very, very good.

message 3346: by carol. , Senor Crabbypants (new)

carol. | 2616 comments Sharon, I thought so too--at first. I tend to be a reader who likes positive-escape, not depressing, gritty storylines. But that's part of the brilliance of Abercrombie's character development--he humanizes them so well that first I started to feel sympathy/pity for the torturer, and finally rather liked him for his humor, ideals (he has them) and yes, his personal growth. I think I stayed with it in the beginning for Nine-Finger's story--glad I did, because I think the series is one of the most satisfying reads I've had all year.

message 3347: by Traci (new)

Traci I love Abercrombie but I have to admit all of his characters are dark, violent and sometimes just plain sick. So probably not for you. :)

I stayed with it as long as I did because of Nine Fingers but it just wasn't *enough* to keep me going. Another big turnoff for me was the political corruption and dishonesty as well. If I really want to hear depressing news about people being robbed, beaten, killed and tortured ... and about political corruption in every walk of life ... I can turn on the TV news.

For entertainment ... I'll pass.

message 3349: by carol. , Senor Crabbypants (last edited Oct 08, 2011 08:49AM) (new)

carol. | 2616 comments But there are redemptive moments, and even the "worst" characters--eventually we are given insight into their motivations and creation. It gives a complexity to them that--you are right--reflects real life. Good consequences can come out of bad motives, and best intentions can lead to nothing, sometimes. The political manipulations will have consequences... I can't say much more because of spoilers.

I get that it's dark. But like I said, it's one of the best reads I've had all year.

I read and enjoyed more of the darker books and more of the *gritty reality* writing when I was younger. The older I've gotten and the more real trouble I've seen and dealt with the more I've found I want my entertainment to be less realistic. I'm definitely old enough to know there are very few 'lived happily ever afters' in real life ... but I'm also old enough to prefer 'happy ever after' in my fantasies.
