Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) Susan, I read The Hobbit this month for the first time. I really enjoyed it.

Currently reading Play Dead. Started out slow, but now I'm engaged.

The Pirate Ghost (Formerly known as the Curmudgeon) (pirateghost) Currently Reading Demon Girl. It's interesting. A PNR, but not so R-ish. So far its pretty interesting. Kind of a UF/PNR maybe though, I'm not enough into it to see were that goes. YA all the way.

message 3210: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 940 comments Still on my SciFi kick. I finished Shades of Grey, although it's fantasy, IMO. Anybody read Shades of Grey? I think it really is fantasy, instead of SciFi, despite talks of color. Whatever the category, I absolutely love this book. But I can't give it 5 stars because the punch line was weak. The book as a whole was a smart satire, with a lot of thought-provoking and zany ideas, so I put it on my favorites shelf. I love SciFi because I really like to bend my mind with ideas, and this genres offers a lot of that.

Starting Rendezvous With Rama. Yay, me! I've been wanting to read this one for a while. Since it is SciFi Aficionado's October read, it gives me an incentive to finally read it. Neuromancer after that, another one I'm looking forward to. Since I've discovered that I really like SciFi, I have so many classic SciFi to catch up on.

Scott | 165 comments I finished Hammerhead Ranch Motel yesterday. The Serge Storm series books are quick fun reads. This was the second in the series.

This morning I started Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. People have been telling me that this is where the series takes off.

message 3212: by Traci (new)

Traci Reading only one book right now Kushiel's Dart. Don't know why I was so hesitant about it. After a difficult start it has become a favorite. Can't wait to continue. If the rest are just as good as the first good bye books of the month. :)

Yaaay! I loved Kushiel's Dart. I felt the language and the world was rather delicious.

Really? I wouldn't have said that at all. Have you read the others? One of the interesting things about the series is that it is developmental in so many aspects--as Harry grows older, the books have an equivalent growth in struggling with ethical and romantic issues.

Yes, The Goblet of The Fire is a major turning point in the series, the story becomes more serious and the writing improves. Have you read the previous three books?

message 3216: by Temi (new)

Temi (temisol) | 39 comments I am currently re-reading the Deverry series by Katharine Kerr but it has been so long since I read them the first time round that it feels pretty brand new! Enjoying it so far.

I have this on my mental to-do list when I can really devote some time. I remember being very impressed by the beginning, but feel like it kind of fell apart at the end.

message 3218: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Michael | 572 comments Just finished the last of the three books by Kevin Hearne, Hounded, Hexed and Hammered. Interesting characters though I have to say my favorite throughout the three books was the sentient Irish Wolfhound ... who did, in fact, get his French Poodle harem!

Fun read and quick, though not one I will keep to re-read ... in fact put them up on eBay already ... but they were fun.

I'm shocked that you lost interest in Neverwhere. That is my favorite of the Gaiman books that I have read so far.

This is my first Gaiman and my first Urban fantasy book. I could probably finish it if i forced myself but i have too many books and too little reading time to do that. I own the book so i will probably pick it up again one day.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) Started Monster Hunter International yesterday. The first chapter didn't exactly grab me, but I'm on the 7th chapter now and it's definitely growing on me.

I like that it's a sort of non-traditional protag, I really like the former exotic dancer character who breaks all her stereotypes, and I'm liking the humor.

Hmmph... I need another Amazon Gift card now.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) Yeah, when I wasn't digging the first chapter I was a bit worried. I know this gets rave reviews from y'all and I went in with high expectations. I'm really glad that I'm starting to get into it more.

I will say that I think the (view spoiler) is a little played out, in general, but I'm willing to go with it if I like everything else about it.

I thought it gets a bit much, too. BUT that thread continues throughout the series.

Kevin Xu (kxu65) I am read The Deptford Trilogy, which I have been meaning to read for the last year or so.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) I figured it would, MrsJ. I can live with it. :>

message 3235: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 940 comments I've put all my other reading aside and decided to read The Good Man Jesus and the Scoundrel Christ, based on Maciek's great review of the book. I wasn't going to any time soon, but now my curiosity is peaked. I really enjoyed Philip Pullman's brilliant writing of the His Dark Materials trilogy, so this should be a good read.

Yeah I remember having some major issues with the plot by about book 3, but I was a very critical 14yr old so maybe I'll be more forgiving the 2nd time round!

I'm also reading the latest in the Heroes series by Moira J. Moore Heroes at Odds. The characterisation can be a bit odd in this series but I like the weird little adventures they get up to. It's a romancey fantasy and good fun.

message 3244: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl Landmark (clandmark) | 861 comments So far, I've only read the first Dresden book and am well on my way to finishing the second, and I am totally hooked on Harry! I think you'll really enjoy this series, Hugh.

message 3245: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 940 comments I really have to start that series since I've heard so much about it. On the other hand, I also need to start on Martin's Thrones, too. Damn these monthly reads. They keep me busy. I don't have to read them, but there's a structure in place that tells me I should read them. I'm such a sheep.

Hugh, based on your recommendations to me, I think you would really enjoy the Dresden books, too.

message 3246: by Tracy (new)

Tracy I would love to get back to the Dresden series but my library wouldn't let me check out Summer Knights. She said it was water damaged and they were taking it out of circulation. They have ordered another, I think, but it takes forever to get them in. I am not a very patient person when it comes to reading. When I want to read it I want to read it now. Whoa is me.

message 3247: by Mach (new)

Mach | 572 comments I just started Storm Front, i hope it lives up to the expectations.

message 3248: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 940 comments Tracy, that's another reason why I went digital. If I want something, I download it immediately to read it. I also hate not having a particular book with me when I think about it. Since my thoughts go a zillion places in a minute, I never know when I suddenly have a craving to look at a particular book. Since a device that holds tons of books and can download them with me anywhere, I don't have that problem any more. I love it! Then again, I faint when I realize how much I spend on eBooks a month. LOL

message 3249: by Tracy (new)

Tracy Hey Aloha, I do have a kindle but I can get carried away with it. I don't realize at the time how much I am spending until I check out my american express card. Even the $2-$4 books add up after a while. I try to justify myself, to myself, by saying I do get most of my reading material from the library and I deserve to purchase every now and then. I have even put myself on an allowance and that didn't work. I would take from the next month to pay for the previous one. Kind of a rob Peter to pay Paul sort of thing.

message 3250: by Tracy (new)

Tracy Mach, if you like the genre you will love Harry Dresden!
