@Traci - That one looks promising too.
@Mach - saw the movie :P"
I know you didn't just diss Pratchett, Ala...
Have you read The Long Dark Tea-time of the Soul by Douglas Adams? It's a satire on PI mysteries, reminded me a little of the movie Who's Harry Crumb, I actually like it more than Hitchhiker.
Starting Clash of Kings next...okay so my mindless period is ending. We all need some thoughtless entertainment now and then. BUT I'm way behind the curve on Martin.
Traci - It looks like Dark Tea-Time is the second in the series. Can you read it without reading the first? It looks pretty cool.
That's the way I read it. I'm a color out of the lines, read out of order kind of person. =) You can read it alone and I didn't like the first one as much.

Never read him.
But there's no chance in hell I'm starting another series with dozens of books right now. I've got enough series I need to get back to already...

I use Pratchett as a break from those long epic fantasies. You don't need to read them in any order. Any one of them can be a stand alone book. He's exactly what you asked for.
They resent that... They're from the dimension "Perv", they prefer "Pervects". The people who live in the human dimension are, "Klahds"... :)

Hopefully I'll be finishing The Black Prism tomorrow considering it's due back at the library. Today I picked up The Help from the library so I'll start that next. I also picked Homeland back up. I really like it and I don't want to wait to continue it.
Half way through The Wandering Fire. Not as good as the first one. But still liking it.@Kevin, why can't you read your book and just pick a random edition for your goodreads library (assuming I understood your post)

I like to have the exact edition that I am reading, if I am to read a book, so I can post the exact number I am on. Plus, I wish I had the patients to add editions of books that Goodreads is missing.
MrsJoseph wrote: "I'm almost finished with The Warded Man. Maybe I'll read Something from the Nightside next."
You still haven't gotten to those yet?
I am dissapoint.

Kevin wrote: "I like to have the exact edition that I am reading, if I am to read a book, so I can post the exact number I am on. I became a Goodreads librarian specifically so that I could combine newly-added editions with the other editions of the same book.
So if you ever need an edition added or combined with others, you know who to ask. :)
Also, I am currently reading Sabriel. So far, I am unimpressed, but I am still pretty early in the book. (And yes, that link to the book does lead to actual edition that I am reading, of course.)
I also like to have the actual edition I am reading on my goodreads shelves.I am currently reading Lost in a Good Book by Jasper Fforde. (There's a series which is meant to be pretty funny, Ala, if you like wordplay.)

I've even asked you about it in the past.

I started and then got distracted by a different shiny book. :(
About to start The Man-Kzin Wars by Larry Niven with Poul Anderson and Dean Ing. Hope those of you who have read it will share your comments with me.
Rusty wrote: "About to start The Man-Kzin Wars by Larry Niven with Poul Anderson and Dean Ing. Hope those of you who have read it will share your comments with me."Haven't read it but Poul Anderson and Larry Niven are two of my favorite authors. =)
I try to shelve the edition I'm reading but my point was it's silly IMHO to not read a book because gr doesn't have the exact copy you are reading. Even when they do it can be wrong. Gr says my book I'm reading now is 400 pages long but it's actually 375. And ebooks really mess you up.

You can post a request to the librarians to have the page count adjusted. As long as your ISBN/edition matches the entry you are requesting to be changed (and WorldCat agrees with your book) it should be no problem.
Ignore Kevin. I doubt that he's not reading a book based on GR editions. Kevin mis-shelves/double & triple shelves books all the time.
I don't know how much anyone pays attention to the front matter and after matter of a book, but for those of you reading Robert Asprin books, it's worth checking to see if he included an essay or comments. I read his take on the making of Theivesworld years ago and it was hilarious. It was well worth the time spent reading 5-6 pages that were not part of a story. It could have been better than some of the stories.

I read the first, but haven't gone back for the rest of that series yet.
Someday, someday...

I seem to have stumbled into several very good new-to-me books, all the first book in a series/trilogy and mostly (I have to admit) based on recommendations here.I'm currently reading (almost finished now) the first book of The Hunger Games trilogy. Not my usual preference, got it from the library rather than buying because it sounded a bit more grim than I usually enjoy. Have to say although it is certainly not a 'sweetness and light' book, it manages not to be depression while still fitting into the world in which it occurs. I'm sorry I'm 6th on the list for the next two at the library, but this is one I need to read first ... it could get more grim, which would keep it from being a re-read for me.
Thanks to Goodreads (okay, I splurged ... I did TWO book orders so far this month ... NOT good!).
So far have read Hounded by Kevin Hearne. A fun read and looks like it will end up being a series that stays on my bookshelves. I have to admit, though, that my favorite character in the book is the wolfhound, Oberon. I DO like his obsession about a harem of black French poodles!
Katherine Kerr's "License to Ensorcell was in the order as well and another I enjoyed very much. (More coming in this series as well)
After finishing up with The Warded Man....I'm feeling the need for something lighthearted and funny. I think I'll either read The Color of Magic or see if I have any funny romances lying about. It took me awhile to fall asleep last night and dark scenes from The Warded Man were floating around in my brain. *needs a palate cleanser*
I'm about to start reading Sex at Dawn: The Prehistoric Origins of Modern Sexuality. Not exactly a palate cleanser, but a departure. I know how you're feeling, MrsJ.

Mrs. Joesph, I don't double shelf. I shelf all the editions of a book that I have. I have multiple copies of books like Ender's Games, which I have over 20 copies, 2 of them signed by Orson Scott Card.

I've even asked you about it before. That time your answer was "I don't know."

My double of books is how I categories a book. Its like when people like to have put all the books they read in certain genres like woman writers or 18th century authors.
You're wasting your energy, MrsJ. You know trying to get Kevin to be consistent is about as effective as trying to get him to not be an ass. It's not worth the time.
Rusty, I read one of the Man Kzin War books:http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...
I wasn't overly impressed, it's readable but (I thought) not great.

And... I've just realized that I don't have a lot of funny books. I mean, there are books that I find funny, but it's mostly dark, dry kinds of humor... or humor coupled along with saving the world and shit.
