What Are You Currently Reading?
Colleen, have you read the Harry Dresden books? I'm awaiting Ghost Story with the same excitement I had for The final Harry Potter.
Although I prefer my books dark, the Harry Potter series left me feeling good and satisfied when I'm done with a book, and looking forward to the next book. It's like the endorphin of books.
Laurel - I have read them, and do read them, but... I sort of got burned out of them for awhile, to be honest. I know they're really popular, but I started feeling that were getting too formulaic - i.e. (view spoiler)Granted there's a fair bit of variation within that theme, but I was sort of meh on them for awhile, so I got behind.
I have since been convinced that things get shook up quite a lot and to continue with them, and I have done, but I only read 11 recently and point blank refuse to read 12 until 13 is out - and in paperback.
So I'm not really part of the whole "omg can't wait!" aspect of it.
Speaking of the Gentlement's Bastards, I just started on The Lies of Locke Lamora.
Colleen,When I say "that's too bad" it's not because I disagree with your decision. I've always been one to stand by my choices, come what may. I say too bad because I think I'm a little like you - I love getting excited about a series, discussing what we think will happen next, the release of a new book. Frankly, I'm counting the days to Ghost Story and loving every minute of it!
I hope you find a new series that is as wonderful and exciting as Harry Potter :)

I miss this, too. I miss going to the midnight book release party at my local bookstore and seeing all the people dressed up as their favorite characters. It's a part of history!

Man, pretty soon you be doing like I did, go and read them all. Then if there are any gaps then go out and buy them brand new. They are one of the most addicting series of all time, really fun and easy to read.
Okay. I'm sold. I gotta put the Dresden books in my to read pile.

Lucky you, Kevin, having a whole day to read especially a Dresden book. They really are good.

You are probably right Kevin. I will tell you my thoughts on the book and I can tell you now that I will be reading more.
Having a good reading week although it does help that I've been reading shorter books. Now Iam on Grave Peril. And yes I do notice a big difference in Butcher's talent already. The begining chapter with the ghost actually made me feel more than the usual popcorn book. And for the first time I actually like other characters other than Harry.
Finally did another review, on Oryx and Crake. This is a long one. No wonder I procrastinate doing reviews! Besides being an emotional reader, I'm an emotional reviewer. I only review if a book really moves me.http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...
Finished Storm Front and loved it. It has a little of everything in it. I plan to read the rest of the series.
I zipped through A Spy in the House by Y.S. Lee yesterday, and this morning I started The Spirit Lens by Carol Berg.
I have a copy of American Gods...I'll get to it one day.I'm still reading The Fire Rose, The Cat Who Sniffed Glue plus 7 other books on my currently reading shelf.

Good to know that book 3 is even better!

Reading, Retribution Falls, haven't watched the show Firefly but it does remind me of a TV show, maybe a litte bit of Cowboy Bebop. So much better than The Lost Gate the book I started to read last night and gave up on this morning because it was so bad.

FYI - the story is very simple and so are the characterizations (it's not a grey story, everything is black and white) but it's good to me. I hope you enjoy it! Tell me what you think when you're done.

I'm about to start Ash. It's a bit YA romancy for my tastes by the looks of it, but I had it practicly forced on me by friend who was rather enthousiastic about it ... We'll see.
I'm not reading any fantasy or sci-fi right now. I'm trying to decide if I want to start Elantris or Winter's Tale. I'm also reading The Forever War, a non-fiction book that has a somewhat memoir/oral history feel written by an LA Times reporter who has spent much of the last decade and a half in Afghanistan and Iraq. It's really good so far.
I finished Planet of the Apes. I really enjoyed it. Trying to make up my mind what to read next. I think I will finish The Beach, since I my craving for SciFi abated some. The hype over A Game of Thrones made me want to see it. I'm going to watch the HBO series to see whether it inspires me to read it.

I like old-school horror movies. Horror books, however? Not at all sure about those.
I like to jump genres and find out what make a book of a certain genre successful. I love how the mechanics change with a genre. That's why I cantstick with one genre. It's too much fun discovering the subtleties of telling a story.
I have not, but I plan to someday.Aloha, is there something you would recommend to ease into horror? (That phrase seems so wrong...)
I'm going to read The Pilo Family Circus, which I heard great things about. For books I've read, I really enjoyed Let's Go Play at the Adams. I wrote a review on it, but you may not want to read the review until you've read the book. You know how my reviews are. I'll have to check it out. I think part of my avoidance comes from my very strong hatred of torture porn.
Adams is more suggestive compared to horror books nowadays, although there is torture in it.

Ayuh - I'm with you there. I've never really gotten into any series as much as that one. Even the ones that I like almost as much don't quite have that same experience of waiting and anticipation - and I think a lot of that is because of the whole shared aspect of it. There were so many people, of all ages and walks of life, who shared it - and it was fun to talk about it and theorize and debate and all that.
It's one reason I'm a little saddened that I'm just not as into some of the other popular adult series - Kingkiller, Gentlemen Bastards, ASOIAF, so on. I miss not just personally being excited for a book to come out - but the whole experience of waiting with millions of others, too.
