Thanks Kernos :)
I'm probably going to start The Black Company tonight.
I really need to stop reading just the first book of a series and actually go back to reading a whole series through...

We need to make this post an announcement, lol.

Great PNRs....hum, that's like "jumbo shrimp" right? An oxymoron, like "clean dirt", "a little pregnant" ("almost pregnant"), "abundant poverty", ...."cafeteria food"?
LOL!! Whatever! You guys liked The Iron Duke. And you liked MHI. A good PNR is a little like MHI, just add in some additonal character building, some angst, a sprinkle of sexual tension and a dash of love scenes. :-P
I actually do enjoy some of the PNR, or at least fantasy with PNR elements. My all-time, hands-down favorite vampire book (Sunshine by Robin McKinley) I would certainly consider to have PNR elements. So like MrsJ, I do have my 'girl' moments, even at 70 ... though I'm probably a lot more selective than I was at 30-something!
I may have to try that one. I've read a couple of Hambly books and while readable, weren't something I'd re-read, but that was a long time ago. Will see if my library has a copy of this one.And McKinley is one of those 'odd' authors for me ... her books are either great, must have if I'm ever marooned on a desert island ... or I can just barely get through them. Haven't figured that out, actually.

Ok, I am LOVING Monster Hunter Vendetta!G-Nome - straight-up gnome killa from the North Side."
I think Grant better watch out... lol!!
Pshk. I would crush G-nome, MrsJ....if I could catch him. Fast little buggers.
Glad to see you again Nikki! I am thinking of taking a GR hiatus myself, just to catch up on life....lolI am reading Fuzzy Nation

If it wasn't wowing you I'd move on to something else.
Welcome back Nicki :)
I say give that book a rest and pick up something fun and quick to start your return to reading. Maybe join MrsJ on her MHV read?

I'm down for a re-read!Ala, I couldn’t put it down. Finished it up last night cause it was AWESOME. Lots of great action.
Hi Nikki, nice you're back.... When I have one of those mental/emotional shut down/overloads, I tend to pull out the audio books. Hope things settle in for you.
I still have both Monster Hunter books to read...
some day, some day...

O_o
You haven't cracked these open yet? Ok, go read the 1st chapter of MHI and then come back and tell us how you feel...
Welcome back, Nicki! I agree something short and fun would be a better jumping off point. I'm ready to finish up our Otherland convo when you are tho! Hope you keep feeling better
Ala, MrsJ is right. Go ahead and crack open Monster Hunter International and see if you don't get sucked in

Third that Ala, Monster Hunter International is great. I'll probably order the third as soon as I see a release date on Amazon. :)

I'm a glutton for punishment, I'll jump in whenever you decide to start. I just finished one batch of library books but have 7 more to get to, plus just got Act of Redemption in the mail. Geist is on my shelf staring accusingly at me, Moon Over Soho and The Guardener's Tale are ordered, the Matador trilogy by Steve perry just got here last week (ordered from ABE as were the others listed here)...and obviously I need to finish the Secret Histories...another one is coming out.I stopped listing...the stacks of books just within arm's reach (which I put there as I "mean to get to them fairly soon" sigh) could crush me if they fell on me.
So, any time. :)
I can't read them now, I'm supposed to be reading BotM stuff.
The horrors.I'm reading Idylls of the King and a Selection of Poems right now. It's been slow going the last bit.
I'm still reading American Gods, I've had the week from hell at work and haven't been reading as quickly as usual.Next I think I'll do Grave Peril, if I have time. I'm planning on starting A Storm of Swords on the 15th, so we'll see.
I started Boneshaker earlier. It is not doing anything to change my passive dislike of the steampunk genre.
Man, I hate that kid in Boneshaker.
Hate.
He's such an idiot. And Widow Blue is just kinda bitchy for no reason.

Yes. This. All of this. Also, the terribly weak ending. And the writing, oh my god the writing. An airship "seeped" upward and there were other such bizarre usages in the middle of the bad writing. Also. WTB character development.
Library run yesterday and I did decide to try Robin Hobb again. They had all three books in the "Soldier Son" trilogy so they all came home with me. I'm only a couple of chapters into the first one, but it certainly seems readable so far.
I liked the first one quite a bit: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...and went right out and got the second...which I detest, hate, loathe:

Feel free to read my reviews if you want to, if not my feelings won't be hurt :)... But as I said, I like the first one to.
Hmmm ... this actually sounds like I 'remember' my thoughts being and why I never read any more of Robin Hobb's books. I remember liking the first book in the series and (like you) absolutely hating the second. It was a DNF for me and I never went on to the third or tried any of her other books.Guess we'll see what happens although I really would prefer to be wrong ... always looking for another author I like since I read so fast I find it difficult to keep myself in books when I only get to the library once or twice a month!
I'm told that the Soldier's Son trilogy is like her worst work and have been encouraged to try something else before I give up on her completely. I probably will as I have something else somewhere on my shelves. I'm just not moving things aside to make room for it.
