Laurel wrote: "What's on July 12th?"*gasp* And you call yourself a fantasy fan. Imposter!
I'm just kidding, I didn't know what they were until last summer. I loved them though.
Maggie wrote: "Traci-Gardens is great, just takes some getting used to. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did!"I'll have to give that a try.
(I love your avatar, by the way.)
Ala wrote: "Like Grant said, The Desert Spear is actually even more enjoyable than Painted/Warded Man.buyit"
Ala-I see why you kept telling me to read this now...it's going to be a trilogy right? I am already thinking about omnibus editions...lol
Amanda wrote: "American McGee's Alice its a dark platformer for the pc. It had some great visuals."Amanda, in case you haven't heard... the sequel is coming out soon. I read/playing/watch almost everything Alice... it's been a favorite for as long as I can remember.
Currently reading
Mistborn: The Final Empire, and still fighting my way through Furies of Calderon. It's going a little better, but not much. I have a copy of Chronicles of The Black Company, so I'll probably hop into that shortly as well.

It's good, huh? I can't wait for the next one! And I think it's something like 5 books long, not just three. But a 5 book series should be a cakewalk for you :P
I still haven't read the other Demon Cycle stuff yet, though you might enjoy them: The Great Bazaar and Other Stories and Brayan's Gold

I finished The Habitation of the Blessed by Catherynne M. Valente yesterday. Very recommended for those who like mythopeic fantasy. Not an easy read, but I did enjoy it. Currently reading The Buntline Special: A Weird West Tale by Mike Resnick.
Finishing up The Warrior Prophet today (thoroughly enjoyable) and trying to decide what I want to read for my 100th book of the year. I'd like a new UF Ive never read. I'm having serious Dresden withdrawals. Suggestions?
How about War for the Oaks? It's a classic early urban fantasy, late '80s in Minneapolis, when the music scene was huge...

Oh God...why all the vampires?? I used to like Vampires but I'm getting sick of Vampires...
*goes looking for a stake*
I suggest we write a teenage angst romance about werewolves. It'll sell like hotcakes, we'll all hate it and talk badly about it - and we'll all be rich and can spend our days reading. :-)

I'm with you, MrsJoseph, I used to love vampire/werewolf stories but now they just remind me of the tweens drooling over Edward... Also, stalking should not be cast as romantic for middle/high schoolers.
Sonja wrote: "I'm with you, MrsJoseph, I used to love vampire/werewolf stories but now they just remind me of the tweens drooling over Edward... Also, stalking should not be cast as romantic for middle/high schoolers."Exactly!
It also scares me that parents of middle/high schoolers think Twilight, etc, is appropriate reading for their children. I'm not a particularly conservative person but these strike me as adult reading.Potentially more terrifying are the middle-aged women who read these books and croon over how dreamy the characters are... I cry for our society sometimes.
Tracey wrote: "Sonja wrote: "It also scares me that parents of middle/high schoolers think Twilight, etc, is appropriate reading for their children. I feel like these books are just soft-core porn, geared towards teens who aren't even aware that there are better relationship options than being stalked. These books put out the wrong message on so many fronts that I think it's almost criminal to foist them on the youth.
Also, there is INFINITELY better reading material that is still interesting and action-packed. I feel that any parent who really cares that their child read could take a minute to explore their options/ at least check the content of the book first...
Well I think part of it is that they know that no real sex happens until much later in the books. Other factors oddly don't seem to come up. I also don't find too many parents that try to influence their kids' reading.
Some parents also realize that trying to control what their children read can also backfire, particularly with something as ubiquitous and popular as Twilight.
Denae wrote: "Some parents also realize that trying to control what their children read can also backfire, particularly with something as ubiquitous and popular as Twilight."Very true. I mean look at how many of us were into books our parents would have grounded us for reading.
Ulitimately the best thing here is to tell them how to deal with dating, how they should expect to be treated and when they need to get out of the relationship.
MrsJoseph wrote: "I suggest we write a teenage angst romance about werewolves. It'll sell like hotcakes, we'll all hate it and talk badly about it - and we'll all be rich and can spend our days reading. :-)"It already exists: Shiver. -sobs-
Denae wrote: "Wait, we're talking YA, right? If so, duplication of plots is totally not an issue!"You have a good point...
How about a sparkly zombie falling in love with a high schooler? You could call the zombie Eddie, and he could tell the girl, Suzy, "You don't want to hang with me. I will hurt you. I will eat your flesh!"
But she'll stay with him and love him and squeeze him.
Until the bad zombies come, of course...
No sparkly characters. I know it's become the thing, but I just can't do it. It exacerbates all of my tics and makes me rage.
I'm almost positive that there was a movie in the early 90's about a zombie that was in love with a high school girl, Jason!
Yup! My Boyfriend's Back!

Ewww. Both of those sound really creepy. Glad I never had the chance to...um...enjoy them. O.oSparkly maggots. Thanks, guys. How will I ever be able to live after today?
My daughter (grown) is very into zombies right now...and ran on a book where Manhattan is overrun by the "zombie plague" (note I don't have to explain what the "zombie plague" is) and a group of "teen aged female soldiers" arrive from Africa led by a UN representative to fight the zombies....Need we say more?
*grins* I'm not gonna lie, Mike, I would totally read it. I'm a sucker for zombie stuff ;)
Hey, more power to you...I'm all for every adult picking their own "brain candy"...http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/44...
I love George Romero's zombie films. 28 Days Later as well, and as evidenced by my desire to both dress up as Alice for Halloween and name a kitten after her, the Resident Evil movies are a huge guilty pleasure of mine.

Just downloaded Monster Island from Amazon. You inadvertently found my 100th read of the year, Mike! Lol, thanks, bud.
Denae, you're not alone in your love of Romero :)

I'm not a huge zombie fan but I did enjoy resident evil...not as much the later ones as the first one (but isn't that always the case?).
I was looking through zombie books the other day and found this that I just had to add to my TBR Night of the Living Trekkies
Just started Nocturnes: Five Stories of Music and Nightfall. I really liked the first story. It had a nice melancholy feel.
Let me unload here and then you can throw stones at me if you want...but you've hit a pet peeve. 28 Days Later isn't a zombie movie. Everybody calls it a zombie movie, but it's not a zombie movie. The people aren't dead. They are infected by a virus that was called "Rage" which drives them insane. They are driven to an uncontrollable rage and pass the virus on by body fluid transfer either saliva or blood. They can be killed but in the end the few survivors wait for the infected to die of starvation. The "monsters" in this movie aren't zombies!
(beats head on wall and pulls out some of what hair is left).
