Finished The Fall of Hyperion. Terrific read which is basically the 2nd half of Hyperion. The 2nd book gives loads of information that completes the events of the first book. I was told that I need to read the whole series to really complete it, but I need to take a break. I am definitely a Dan Simmons fan now. I will be reading his other books, in particular Carrion Comfort.Starting Stingers, a whimsical thriller about a pre-teen girl who turned her father's failed experiment into a Sound Shooter, a sound device that enables her to subliminally manipulate people.

Machavelli wrote: "I am reading The Black Company this is so boring i have read three books while trying to read it. I have read about 50 pages in 9/10 days, i am on the verge of giving up."It really is a great series. It's possible that you're just not in the mood for it right now. I know that happens with me sometimes. I'll start a book, can't get into it and pick it up later (sometimes years later) and simply love it.
Of course there are the rare ones that are no good no matter how much time has passed! -grin-
I love the Black Company books as well. Great series. I like it right from the beginning, personally :)
I just received my Amazon shipment...The Blade Itself and then Cold Hand in Mine. I havent read Aikman before so I am kind of excited to get to it.
I read a tale of The Black Company in Swords & dark Magic. It was...ok. I got the impression that "The Lady" was evil, which makes me hesitate. I love a good military tale but I prefer soliders who think as well as follow orders.
I've been here awhile. Just not a lot of time to chat lately. So I thought I'd read this month's read and get back into the discussion.
Jason wrote: "I love that title. Cold Hand in Mine. It speaks of...terrible things...LOL"I thought the same thing!
Finished Stingers. Starting We Have Always Lived in the Castle. All I can say is "Wow!" from her very first words. This is what I consider literature, when an author is masterful with the usage of words to paint an atmosphere. This is a short book and I can see myself salivating for every word.
Aloha - if you've never read The Haunting of Hill House, by Shirley Jackson, you should try that one next. It is also excellent :)
Aloha, I'll be starting Castle soon, too, for our HA read. I leant out my Kindle and am waiting for the damn thing back...LOL
I read Hill House and liked it.. But then I tried Hell House after that and liked it soooo much more. It kind of damaged my opinion of Hill House, but I still want to try the Castle book eventually.
As for what I'm currently reading.. I finished the Dark Tower series this month, LOVED it. The ending is still haunting me. Near the end I spent one late night laying in bed, unable to sleep, hugging my pillow and crying. And for the record, I'm not big on the whole water works thing usually.... So let's all pretend I didn't just say that, cool? :)Now I'm reading Magician: Master for a group read/discussion (it's a re-read), and I'm really enjoying it so far.
After Magician, I'm either going to try The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms or Heart-Shaped Box. Hell, I'll probably just do both, I just need to decide which to do first.
i LOVED The Passage. one of the best things i read last year. at least i think it was last year.also love Cold Hand in Mine, and robert aickman in general.

I've read a collection of her nonhorror stories and loved them too :). Jacksons just all around awesome!

They tell you more about the world and i hear he'll be going back with another book as well!
I just got The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger Born from the library (it joins 10 other public library books I need to finish). I've joked that the answer to the questioning title of this thread pops into my mind as "a book" often. I think the true answer would be...a lot of books, all at once!
Amanda wrote: "Don't forget to read the Dark Tower Graphic novels! They tell you more about the world and i hear he'll be going back with another book as well!"I've already read the first one, and the others are on route to me as we speak. I had to own them all! :)
It's a graphic and I'm pretty much through it. The art's nice and it fills in a few details but it's basically the story we knew from the novels. I sent to the library for the next. I sort of hoped for a little more story background and "such", fill in some of the blanks and cracks left open so to speak.

I'll try to stay with them...but I note the library doesn't have the third. I may go slow about buying. LOL
Thanks, R. Scott. I'm hooked on Jackson's writing now. I will have to read her THHH.R. Scott wrote: "Aloha - if you've never read The Haunting of Hill House, by Shirley Jackson, you should try that one next. It is also excellent :)"
I hope you get your Kindle back soon, Jason. So much to read with no Kindle! Poor thing.Jason wrote: "Aloha, I'll be starting Castle soon, too, for our HA read. I leant out my Kindle and am waiting for the damn thing back...LOL"
Darn! I've joined too many groups. A lot of people have been friending me since I rejoined the SciFi and Fantasy Book Club. I've been seeing what groups they belong to and started joining those groups. Now, I can't keep up with them all, so I've been very delayed in responding to posts. Sorry, guys.
Hope you enjoy it Christine :) It's a great book
lol @ Aloha. I'm so deprived apparently. I'm still only a member of F.A. :) I guess I should branch out

What actually happened was I had a couple of days where I had to focus, so I digested everything. I'm slowly undigested my favorite areas. I forgot to undigest this one because some areas are hidden when you go to the main page. I wonder whether I would visit those new forums I joined again after saying my intro. Never know when I want to know about ancient civilization.Grant wrote: "lol @ Aloha. I'm so deprived apparently. I'm still only a member of F.A. :) I guess I should branch out"
Aloha wrote: "I just got a bunch of Neil Gaiman's Sandman graphic novels. They are awesome!"Glad you like them!
I finished Geist and loved it except for the ending...but the ending makes (somewhat) some sense considering that there are 3 more books in the series. I (finally) started on Monster Hunter International. I think that this one have to be read by hubby - he's an auditor and the primary character here is an accountant. :-)
