I finished the First Law -trilogy last week and have thought about it since. Have you read it?
The setup is semi-original fantasy with grim twists, so nothing groundbreaking there. The characters however are very vividly written. Very genuine and gray. People with good intentions may reveal themselves selfish and visa versa. And There's really no chance to predict how the characters react to each other. It kept me awake many post-bed time hours.
Last Argument of Kings is my favourite, books kept getting better as you read them. Very solid trilogy, 4 stars.
