RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Man, I dig basil, growing it, eating it, everything, and apparently we're in danger of a basil blight...

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/st...

Basil? Thoughts?

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Noooooo!!! I love basil! Stay away, blight!

Last year tomatoes, this year basil... what's up with the attack on Italian food?

I sprinkle basil on my cheese and tomato grilled cheese sandwiches, and my cheese and tomato omelets, and on pizza if I'm at home.
And it's really good fresh in a caprese salad.

::pushes Kevin towards Bun:: Here kick him! :-)

And yes it was a tough decision who to push, but I knew Kevin could take it.

message 4: by [deleted user] (new)

Just protecting my own shins, I guess I could just get shin guards to go along with my hockey mask. Yay for basil here too.

message 5: by [deleted user] (new)

::puts on shin guards, and quickly pulls Kevin back before Bun changes her mind::

message 6: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I think Kevin is a fine target for shin-kicking. I am proud to forward Kevin's name in this endeavor.

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments I FUCKING LOOOOOVE BASIL!!!!

I use it for everything - I especially love to replace lettuce with it on a sandwich. It makes me tremendously happy.

My neighbor has the sweetest, most awesome cinnamon basil growing in his back yard. He shares. :D

Yeah. I love basil.

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 350 comments It does seem that way Sally.

Heidi are you sure it was basil you put on your sandwich and maybe not some other herb?

message 11: by Félix (last edited Jun 24, 2010 06:52PM) (new)

Félix (habitseven) I like the British pronunciation of basil. And I guess Australian, too.

message 12: by [deleted user] (new)

You like the way the British pronounce Australian?

message 13: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Yeah that's it, mate.

I love rosemary too, but not nearly as much as I LOVE BASIL!!!

message 28: by ms.petra (new)

ms.petra (mspetra) Heidi, do you like basil or not?

message 29: by [deleted user] (new)

She never is very clear is she.

Have you ever had a bacon, basil and tomato sandwich Heidi?

message 32: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
Is there anyone who doesn't like basil?

message 33: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments I like basil but not pesto. Isn't that weird?

message 34: by [deleted user] (new)

Basil Rathbone is my favorite Basil.

janine | 7709 comments yay to basil!

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
Why dontca like pesto, Gretchen? Is it the garlic, the pine nuts?

message 37: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments Ohhhh. Pine Nuts. I don't like Pine Nuts. That's it. Thanks, Sally.

(Garlic?? Would I not like Garlic? How could you ever trust someone who doesn't like GARLIC?)

message 38: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Does anyone do the thing where they freeze basil in ice cube trays? I hear that works pretty well.

message 39: by Youndyc (new)

Youndyc | 1255 comments Basil is awesome. I always manage to kill my basil plants, but I love basil. Pesto is okay, but not my favorite and I think it's the garlic, but I love pine nuts.

message 40: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments Well clearly Youndy is a vampire.

I do that thing with Basil too. And Parsley. And cilantro.

message 41: by Youndyc (new)

Youndyc | 1255 comments Is anybody else reminded of Tom Cruise when reading Heidi's earlier "I love it. I love it. I love it." etc. post?

message 42: by Youndyc (new)

Youndyc | 1255 comments Oh, and I'm not a vampire. Not. But I do sparkle in the sun.

message 43: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments Where in Orlando are you, Youndy?
I lived in Lake Mary for a year.
(not that it has anything to do with basil or garlic or pine nuts)

message 44: by Heidi (last edited Jun 25, 2010 11:43AM) (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments I don't like pesto either, Gretchen. In fact, when one of the local delis offers their sandwich with pesto or basil (when it's in season), buffalo mozzarella, and tomatoes, I'll order it ONLY with the basil. Otherwise, you know... when they ask if I want it with pesto, I say no and then go with the tuna sammie.

But I FUCKING LOVE BASIL!!!

I was thinking about doing that with the shit ton of parsley I have right now.

message 46: by Youndyc (new)

Youndyc | 1255 comments Hi Gretchen, I'm pretty close to downtown, in Baldwin Park.

message 47: by Youndyc (new)

Youndyc | 1255 comments Hey, Barb - try glitter.

My wife's mom lives in Heathrow. That's near Lake Mary, right? Except there's a big wall around it.

message 49: by Youndyc (new)

Youndyc | 1255 comments Heathrow and Lake Mary are basically the same. Heathrow is a (very large) development - I'm not sure it's in the city limits of Lake Mary, but if not, it's really close.

message 50: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Can I bring this back to basil since I wasn't around for that part of the conversation?
Because I have lemon basil in my garden, and I have spent the last week of 95+ degree heat living on berry-lemon basil smoothies that are possibly the best thing on the planet.

Also, I made some really good mozzerella-basil-tomato sandwiches until stupid Bozilla stomped my garden flat and ate all my beautiful Early Girl tomatoes.
