Captain Sir Roddy, R.N. (Ret.) (captain_sir_roddy) Awesome news! I am in the midst of reading the fourth book right now, and am completely hooked on this series. I am also in the process of buying hardcover editions of this series too. This is a keeper!

I am really looking forward to doing a re-read of the first three volumes, as there is so much to digest, think about, and rediscover. Also, I would be delighted to help with keeping the discussions going too. Count me an 'Erikson Addict' too!

John | 139 comments Just throwing out an idea here, but the way I saw the discussion of Wars of Light and Shadow going was that discussions were open on more or less all the books all the time, allowing people to get their thoughts down whenever they happen to be reading a volume. Now, the discussion would tend to heat up during the particular month that was agreed upon for each book, but there was an inherent flexibility to it.

Also, do we want to essentially "start" with the second book, since we've already had a pretty good discussion of Gardens of the Moon over in the Fantasy Book Club? Is there a way to import that discussion over here so they're all together, particularly if someone DOES want to start there rather than moving right into Deadhouse Gates?

Anyway, I'm just throwing out ideas. No one died (or Ascended) and made ME Emperor of the book club, that's for sure. Call me Whiskeyjack, just a good soldier who follows orders. :)

I don't think we can import the discussion from one group to another. I will have to post a question to GoodReads about that.

If you want me to make the first book to group read the second book, I'll be happy to do that. Are we sure most of the people participating here at FBCS have read Garden of the Moons? If you haven't please pipe up now!

Sandra (sleo) | 1059 comments I think a thread should be made for it whether or not people have read it. Others might want to discuss.

I guess I would go with either way the group decides. I wasn't in the original discussion, and feel for me a reread is in order. SO my preference would be to still do GotM

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 111 comments Personally, I'd start with GotM. It's a tall assumption to say that everyone participating did the read in FBC way back when. You don't want to lose people before it even starts by putting them a full book behind.

If people wish to start with DH, they could use that first month to get ready for it, no harm done.

Sandra (sleo) | 1059 comments Good points, all. If this series is as complex as people say, then a reread is going to be good. I find on rereads how much I missed first time through.

Captain Sir Roddy, R.N. (Ret.) (captain_sir_roddy) I just read GotM a couple of weeks ago, but I can tell you that I definitely want to revisit it with all of you. Plus, there are a lot of folks who haven't read it, and I do think it is important to start with everyone on the 'same sheet of music.' Just my two-cents.

message 59: by Ryan (new)

Ryan Mclelland (theryanmc) Having just read GotM a few months ago, I know that I missed a lot. I have read through some of the TOR.com reread of it and realized just how much I missed. I think it would be a bad idea to start anywhere else. If people are familiar with it from previous reads they can still join in the discussion.

Captain Sir Roddy, R.N. (Ret.) (captain_sir_roddy) Sandra, and all, I am willing to help lead the discussion of GotM starting on February 15th. I am also hopeful (hint, hint ;-) that perhaps Maggie will help me too. Regardless, I am willing to dedicate the time necessary to endeavor to make this a great experience for us all.

I will start working on developing a plan for breaking the novel up into manageable sections, and compiling background information, links to maps, etc.

Janny (jannywurts) | 414 comments Through the 'experimental building stage' of this group (with Light and Shadow) we tried linking the earlier 2 books to their monthly discussion in the regular fantasy book club.

This worked and didn't - on the positive side, it allowed the main club to 'see' into the start of the series; on the detraction side, the discussion in this series group never became as rich or deep (we had space for new posts, but it was sorta lamed by the fact most of the first take responses were in the other group).

I don't know how to 'solve' this - except to encourage original, past readers to import some of their past posts with copy/paste to flesh out the discussion, here...the link was available, but there was no way to really know how much it was used.

More readers read and follow than actually post.

If anything in the 'first run' experience can help grow and enrich this group, my input is available to all.

Great. I think Nicola will help, and perhaps Maggie? And anyone else that I'm forgetting. Terence said he'd do book 5, I think?

Jon (jonmoss) Just FYI: Tor has a sale on the ebook of Gardens of the Moon this month: http://torforge.wordpress.com/2011/01... (which I'm going to buy to replace my paperback edition).

Also, I'm willing to donate my very slightly used copy (trade paperback edition) of Gardens of the Moon as a give-away contest prize. Or I can just add it to my swap inventory and let it go to the first lucky requestor.

I've returned safely from my roadtrip to Texas and avoided all the driving in snow in Kansas. Today I'm relaxing, catching up on reading, and hopefully, getting back into gear on GoodReads.

With respect to the Malazan series books, have we decided that the above list is the official group read list?

If so, I'll modify the existing schedule on the to-read shelf to match the list above.

Let me know!

Jon

We didn't make a decision yet Jon! I think the consesus is that once we get going we will see what the various participants think. With all these books we have plenty of time. lol

I'll set up a thread once I set up the Mazalan folder so you all can discuss/decide.

I already set it up (today). :)

Well...that's one way to think on it. But there is another series in that world that takes place at the same time but in different parts of the world. They tie in here and there as well. They are by Ian Esslemont who created this amazing world with Erikson and begins with Night of Knives which is a prelude to both Esslemont and Erikson's series.

Jon Sprunk | 6 comments This is one of my all-time favorite fantasy series. It can be a little difficult to get into at first, and the story is dense with many different pov characters. I wasn't sold until I re-read the first few books a second time. At that point, it just clicked for me. And I've loved these books ever since. Erikson is one of the best in the genre ever, imo.
