Vanessa (vanessamc) | 646 comments Hey Everyone,

I thought it might be fun to find out where everyone is situated around the globe. I know not everyone is in the United States like I am.

I'll start. I live in Vacaville, Ca., (U.S.), which is about right in the middle between Sacramento and San Francisco. The weather's pretty mild, although it can pretty hot during the summer. We are not a huge town, which is great because it only takes 15 minutes to get from one side of town to the other. It's big enough though, that you don't usually have to go far if you want to eat out, go to a movie, or do some shopping.

My 17 year old daughter would not agree, though, as she made me take her to the Bay area to get her prom dress.

I've lived in Maryland, Virginia, Mississippi, and Nevada, as well as California. The only time I've been out of the country was when my aunt took me to Baja. There are a lot of places I've visited in the country, though, that stand out in my mind. I loved Hawaii, especially Maui. I also love the Shenandoah Valley. I wouldn't want to live there, but really like visiting New York City and Washington D.C. I know there are others, but this is getting long, and so I just want to say that probably my all-time favorite vacation destination is Disneyland. My husband says that I'd live there if I could.

Alyssa (alyssa_hesper) I live in Macon, GA (USA) which is right in the middle of Georgia. We never really have much of a winter, which never helps with the bug situation in the summer, lol. Our summers are very hot and are always sweltering once you factor in the humidity. This always makes for lovely summer hair :) With all that being said, I love it here and wouldn't want to live anywhere else. I've been here all my life and love the landscape, people & everything Macon has to offer.

Another great idea from Vanessa! Love it <3

Vanessa (vanessamc) | 646 comments Alyssa, my husband was born in Athens, GA. and then lived in Rockmart and Rome for awhile. He spent most of his youth in California, though and really prefers it here. I have very fond memories when I lived in Maryland and VA, since I didn't move to CA until I was 16.

Shazzy,

When my grandmother did our family tree, it shows my main ancestors were from Wales. My maiden names is Jones, so duh!! I've never been to England, but would love to go someday. Since my husband is mostly Irish, maybe one day we can over and do both at the same time. I don't know if we could show ourselves in Ireland, though - my father-in-law said his family were a bunch of horse thieves. I don't know if he was serious. Maybe I'll have to ask him for more info.

message 4: by David (new)

David Peters I have lived here there and everywhere but my home of the last 15 years has been SPAMtown USA, or otherwise known as Austin Minnesota (right on the Iowa border in the middle).

My true home is England though and while I generally tell everyone London, for Shazzy's benifit I will be more precise and say High Wycombe, Bucks. I also lived in Leicester, Milton Keynes, Bicester, Runcorn, Telford, Wednesfield, Coventry, and Loughborough (all over the middle of England). I spent four years in Turkey and a few in the US (Indiana, South Carolina, Utah, Iowa, Mississippi,California, Arizona, and Minnesota). Yes my Dad worked for the government :-)

Anyways, I have been around so to speak.

Gina | 8 comments My name is Gina, and I live 40 miles north of Houston TX in Conroe. I have been all over the US and lived briefly overseas in Japan. I have been in TX since 1999 we moved from Apple Valley CA. As an ex truck driver, I have found that the northeast is gorgeous except in winter and that I do not care for New Mexico or Utah (lived there twice). I was born in Louisiana, but moved repeatedly since my dad was in the Navy. I did graduate from Morgan City and went to college in Thibodeaux.

message 6: by Vanessa (last edited Jun 25, 2010 12:06PM) (new)

Vanessa (vanessamc) | 646 comments Thanks for adding that Gina, I appreciate it. So, I do know where Houston is, but I've only driven through. If I am remembering correctly, Houston is the one along Interstate 10 below Austin, which is on Interstate 40. (I guess I could just look at a map, but this is more fun). I once drove from CA to MS on 10 and so I remember that experience really well. I was so glad when I finally got to the middle of Texas; I didn't know that about half was desert and then half was green, if I'm remembering correctly. That always stuck in my mind. I was born in LA, and have actually been back several times since my family left there 2 months after I was born and moved to VA.

I have a friend in Pearland, TX which is toward the bottom of the state along the coast. I used to know her when we lived in MD together. Okay, I'm rambling now, and maybe I'll PM you about Japan. That's one country I've always wanted to visit.

What part of LA were you born; I was born in Lake Charles.

Vanessa (vanessamc) | 646 comments David,

You live in the part of the country that I've never visited. Someday, I hope to see everything. It sounds like you seen quite a bit.

Sandi *~The Pirate Wench~* (thepiratewench) | 16 comments Im from ontario canada..lived here all my life...and yes in the winter it is unbearably COLD.my daughter moved out to banff alberta 3 years ago..and on a visit I can see why she never wants to move back! the mountains are breath taking its truly beautiful out there..I took a trip 4 years ago by myself to scotland..It was a 2 week tour of the country..and I would do it again in a heart beat..what a beautiful country &the people as well..if I can save & plan for another trip it would be egypt...ah to dream :)

message 9: by Alyssa (new)

Alyssa (alyssa_hesper) I would love to visit Scotland or Ireland, they both look like such beautiful places!

message 10: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (vanessamc) | 646 comments I agree Alyssa, maybe some day when the kids are gone and/or I have the funds. My husband's family is from Ireland and I've heard that it so beautiful.

My 17 year old daughter says she plans to go to Ontario, Canada when she graduates. Her best friend lives there. She's never been anywhere but California and I told her she responsible for buying the airplane ticket. It's going to be interesting to see if she actually goes, and if she does, if she can handle the weather. Of course, I will support any decision she makes and have told her I would pay if she needed to come home.

I was born in Monroe, and Conroe is between Houston and Dallas on I 45. We r close to Huntsville, TX the capital of death row ( we execute more people in TX than any place else.)

message 12: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (vanessamc) | 646 comments Gosh Gina,
That's a great piece of trivia about Texas, I had no idea! Here in Vacaville, we have a prison for mentally ill patients. I'm told Manson was once there, but he's gone and I only remember one breakout and it was a long time ago. It's funny, I never really think about it.

Kim (kimstories) I am South African - and live in Durban. I have lived all over - both in Europe and Africa - but for now I think Durban is the most beautiful place to live. It's warm, the ocean is warm, the people are warm - I am one happy camper
:-)

message 14: by Alyssa (new)

Alyssa (alyssa_hesper) Kim that sounds like a wonderful place. Glad you've found a somewhere that makes you happy :) That is often such a difficult thing to do.

Kim, that sounds wonderful. I'm getting older and am starting to wonder if I'll ever get to travel. I've been to Hawaii, which I loved, and parts of Mexico. I am sponsoring a boy in Tanzania. His family are farmers, and American money goes so much farther there than it does here. The birthday money I send has been used for the whole family. I remember one year they used the money to buy a mattress so his mother and he would not have to lay on the dirt floor of their dwelling. Other purchases included materials for an outhouse and a goat and chicken.

I'm glad you live just where you want to. I love the United States, but would really like to see more of the world. Maybe someday.

message 16: by Kim (new)

Kim (kimstories) Hi Vanessa
I loved Tanzania - I think of all my travels its the country that most stole my heart.
What you are doing is making a difference you probably cannot even envision. The poverty there is awful. andnow, one more mom is sleeping on a matress.yay
and one boy is getting an education.
through whom do you do this? I'd be interested in loking at it - even our weak rand is better than tnazanian shillings

message 17: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (vanessamc) | 646 comments Kim,

I started some time ago through Compassion International. I think I've been sponsoring Asanteel at least 6 years. It's currently $38.00 a month, and I send him birthday and Christmas gifts. They can't be over $25.00, but they go a long way. The birthday gift money generally goes to helping his own family, and the Christmas money is pooled and the kids get a party and some presents, mostly new clothes. I get regular pictures and correspondence. The monthly money goes to schooling, Sunday School, etc. It is a religious type charity and so Christianity is teached. But I'm sure if that doesn't appeal to someone, there are other organizations that are not religiously affiliated. Even with money so tight, my family and I never miss a month; it's the one charitable gift we really feel makes a difference. Maybe one day when the kids are out of the house, I'll be able to sponsor another child. They also have mission trips to Tanzania, and maybe some day I'll be able to go on one and meet Asanteel and his family. He already has decided he wants to be a teacher.

Okay, I'm running on about this. It's just something I feel very strongly about. It reminds me how lucky I am have to have a home, while they get excited just to have a mattress and somewhere to go to the bathroom. It can really humble a person. Okay, going to get off my soapbox now. I really have to get off this computer and do something productive!!

thanks for that - I will go an investigate. Nothing like the stakness of the lives of others to remind us just how lucky we really are

message 20: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (vanessamc) | 646 comments Hey Deborah,

That's interesting! I now live in California as well, (although in the North,) and I was born in Lousiana, Lake Charles. My mother was born in Mitchell.

Vanessa (vanessamc) | 646 comments Amy,

Exactly how cold does it get there and what part of the state is Iuka in? I know I could consult a map, but having you tell me is more fun.

Elizabeth (ezepeze11) | 582 comments Modesto CA, USA.

lived here all my life and i have been out of the country twice once to Italy and once to Canada.

i have been to a lot of different states and i collect something with the name of the state from every state i have been to!

message 23: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (vanessamc) | 646 comments Elizabeth, we're practically neighbors!! I'm from Vacaville. I've never been out of the country, though, except Mexico.

message 27: by Tara (new)

Tara Nienaber | 5 comments I live in St. Francis, MN. I've lived in the northern suburbs of the Twin cities my whole life. People complain about the winters here, but I like the change of seasons!

message 28: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (vanessamc) | 646 comments Tara,

I usually have pretty nice weather in California, but right now it's been raining for two weeks. I love a little rain, but I'm yearning for the sun. At least I usually don't have to worry about frozen pipes.

message 29: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (ezepeze11) | 582 comments yea, i feel like i have been wearing my rain boots like my whole life :(

i heard someone say today that i might snow tonight, though it might not stick to the ground?? exitement!!

message 30: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (vanessamc) | 646 comments I think we had snow one time since I've lived here. It's kind of funny because there have been nights when it's been cold enough, but the cold and rain never seem to come together. If it snowed here, I think the drivers wouldn't know how to handle it. It would be interesting, though.

message 31: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (ezepeze11) | 582 comments i know if it's cold then there's no clouds, and if there's clouds there's no cold :(

message 34: by Brenda (new)

Brenda | 221 comments I am from Newcastle, Australia. I have lived in Australia all my life, moved around a bit, but love it here...we are the lucky country! Having said that, at the moment Queensland, up north of us, is in severe flood. There have been 15 bodies found up until now, with thousands of homes and businesses lost, damaged or wrecked. The river level at Ipswich (where my brother lives) peaked at 19.4 metres yesterday! We have flooding in the southern states too, and bush fires in the West!!! But we will come through, we always do.......:) (and where I live, we are having to water the garden by hand...:D)

message 35: by Gina (new)

Gina I am from Fishers, Indiana. But i was born in Bulgaria. I've always wanted to go to New Zealand and Austrilia

message 36: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (vanessamc) | 646 comments Brenda,

Sorry to hear about the flood. It sounds terrible, but it still looks like you love it there. It seems so far from here, halfway around the world, but I'd love to visit one day. Just out of curiosity, when would be a good time to visit Australia? We've had a lot of rain here too, but I can't complain. I guess we're a little spoiled around here.

Gina,

Welcome. When did you come from Bulgaria?

message 37: by Brenda (new)

Brenda | 221 comments Hi Vanessa, it depends where you wanted to go..northern Australia is extremely humid in the summer, plus there are cyclones, floods etc. Our summer is Dec to Feb incl. The southern states are fine in the summer, still hot, but not so humid. In the winter, the northern states are great, the southern states pretty cold, especially in the snowfields! Probably the best time of year for all of Australia would be either Feb to May, or Sept to Nov. But it's a beautiful country, well worth a visit...I think Oprah in Australia is on your TV's pretty soon, perhaps have a look at what she did while she was here...she had a ball apparently!

message 38: by Stacey (new)

Stacey | 45 comments My name is Stacey. I live in North Reading, Massachusetts which is about 15 miles north of Boston. I am also about 10 miles south of the New Hampshire border... There is a popular saying (at least in these parts) If you don't like the weather, wait a minute it will change! I would say that is somewhat accurate ;-) Winter in New England is very much like riding a roller coster.

message 39: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (vanessamc) | 646 comments Stacey,

It's funny you should say that. That's the same saying they use for San Francisco, and having visited there, I can say they are absolutely right. I used to live in Norfolk, VA, where it can be in the teens one day, and the 60's the next. It has something to do with the Gulf Coast stream, as they call it. I've never been to England. I'd like to go there one day in the fall. I bet it's gorgeous.

message 40: by Alyssa (new)

Alyssa (alyssa_hesper) I was just sitting here reading everyone's posts about the beautiful places in which we live, and was really awestruck for a moment. The love of a book and/or series can bring so many people together - through the wonder of the internet we get the capability to discover new friends & discuss our love for Eve & Roarke - how amazing is that?!

I live in Georgia and we usually have 2 temperatures, hot or extremely hot and all are served with a big side of humidity (which works wonders for the hair ladies ). However, we have been experiencing some extremely cold temps lately and even had snow this past Monday. When it snows here, EVERYTHING shuts down because we have no way to deal with the roads & such. People are basically stuck in their houses until it thaws - oh what fun! It's a welcome change from all the heat but it was 16 degrees this morning, a GA girl just isn't used to this.

message 41: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (vanessamc) | 646 comments Wow, I didn't know it could get that cold in GA! I remember when hubbie went to GA for his grandmother's funeral. He said he stepped out of the airport, and was soaked with sweat from the humidity by the time they got to his grandmother's house. He says he doesn't miss that part at all. He's just a spoiled CA boy. We don't get a lot of humidity, but when we do, people freak out. If it snowed here, I would be afraid to drive; people here have a hard time when it rains.

Elizabeth, I didn't hear about it, but then I have to confess that I don't watch the news very much. That sounds really scary. We don't have a lot of major crime here in Vacaville, but we've had a couple murders the last couple years, and the usual burglaries etc. Bombs, though, scary stuff!!
