Where Are You From? Where Do You Live?

Another great idea from Vanessa! Love it <3

Shazzy,
When my grandmother did our family tree, it shows my main ancestors were from Wales. My maiden names is Jones, so duh!! I've never been to England, but would love to go someday. Since my husband is mostly Irish, maybe one day we can over and do both at the same time. I don't know if we could show ourselves in Ireland, though - my father-in-law said his family were a bunch of horse thieves. I don't know if he was serious. Maybe I'll have to ask him for more info.

My true home is England though and while I generally tell everyone London, for Shazzy's benifit I will be more precise and say High Wycombe, Bucks. I also lived in Leicester, Milton Keynes, Bicester, Runcorn, Telford, Wednesfield, Coventry, and Loughborough (all over the middle of England). I spent four years in Turkey and a few in the US (Indiana, South Carolina, Utah, Iowa, Mississippi,California, Arizona, and Minnesota). Yes my Dad worked for the government :-)
Anyways, I have been around so to speak.

I have a friend in Pearland, TX which is toward the bottom of the state along the coast. I used to know her when we lived in MD together. Okay, I'm rambling now, and maybe I'll PM you about Japan. That's one country I've always wanted to visit.
What part of LA were you born; I was born in Lake Charles.

You live in the part of the country that I've never visited. Someday, I hope to see everything. It sounds like you seen quite a bit.

My 17 year old daughter says she plans to go to Ontario, Canada when she graduates. Her best friend lives there. She's never been anywhere but California and I told her she responsible for buying the airplane ticket. It's going to be interesting to see if she actually goes, and if she does, if she can handle the weather. Of course, I will support any decision she makes and have told her I would pay if she needed to come home.

I was born in Monroe, and Conroe is between Houston and Dallas on I 45. We r close to Huntsville, TX the capital of death row ( we execute more people in TX than any place else.)

That's a great piece of trivia about Texas, I had no idea! Here in Vacaville, we have a prison for mentally ill patients. I'm told Manson was once there, but he's gone and I only remember one breakout and it was a long time ago. It's funny, I never really think about it.

:-)

Kim, that sounds wonderful. I'm getting older and am starting to wonder if I'll ever get to travel. I've been to Hawaii, which I loved, and parts of Mexico. I am sponsoring a boy in Tanzania. His family are farmers, and American money goes so much farther there than it does here. The birthday money I send has been used for the whole family. I remember one year they used the money to buy a mattress so his mother and he would not have to lay on the dirt floor of their dwelling. Other purchases included materials for an outhouse and a goat and chicken.
I'm glad you live just where you want to. I love the United States, but would really like to see more of the world. Maybe someday.

I loved Tanzania - I think of all my travels its the country that most stole my heart.
What you are doing is making a difference you probably cannot even envision. The poverty there is awful. andnow, one more mom is sleeping on a matress.yay
and one boy is getting an education.
through whom do you do this? I'd be interested in loking at it - even our weak rand is better than tnazanian shillings

I started some time ago through Compassion International. I think I've been sponsoring Asanteel at least 6 years. It's currently $38.00 a month, and I send him birthday and Christmas gifts. They can't be over $25.00, but they go a long way. The birthday gift money generally goes to helping his own family, and the Christmas money is pooled and the kids get a party and some presents, mostly new clothes. I get regular pictures and correspondence. The monthly money goes to schooling, Sunday School, etc. It is a religious type charity and so Christianity is teached. But I'm sure if that doesn't appeal to someone, there are other organizations that are not religiously affiliated. Even with money so tight, my family and I never miss a month; it's the one charitable gift we really feel makes a difference. Maybe one day when the kids are out of the house, I'll be able to sponsor another child. They also have mission trips to Tanzania, and maybe some day I'll be able to go on one and meet Asanteel and his family. He already has decided he wants to be a teacher.
Okay, I'm running on about this. It's just something I feel very strongly about. It reminds me how lucky I am have to have a home, while they get excited just to have a mattress and somewhere to go to the bathroom. It can really humble a person. Okay, going to get off my soapbox now. I really have to get off this computer and do something productive!!

Hi Vanessa
thanks for that - I will go an investigate. Nothing like the stakness of the lives of others to remind us just how lucky we really are

That's interesting! I now live in California as well, (although in the North,) and I was born in Lousiana, Lake Charles. My mother was born in Mitchell.

Exactly how cold does it get there and what part of the state is Iuka in? I know I could consult a map, but having you tell me is more fun.

lived here all my life and i have been out of the country twice once to Italy and once to Canada.
i have been to a lot of different states and i collect something with the name of the state from every state i have been to!

I usually have pretty nice weather in California, but right now it's been raining for two weeks. I love a little rain, but I'm yearning for the sun. At least I usually don't have to worry about frozen pipes.

i heard someone say today that i might snow tonight, though it might not stick to the ground?? exitement!!

Sorry to hear about the flood. It sounds terrible, but it still looks like you love it there. It seems so far from here, halfway around the world, but I'd love to visit one day. Just out of curiosity, when would be a good time to visit Australia? We've had a lot of rain here too, but I can't complain. I guess we're a little spoiled around here.
Gina,
Welcome. When did you come from Bulgaria?

It's funny you should say that. That's the same saying they use for San Francisco, and having visited there, I can say they are absolutely right. I used to live in Norfolk, VA, where it can be in the teens one day, and the 60's the next. It has something to do with the Gulf Coast stream, as they call it. I've never been to England. I'd like to go there one day in the fall. I bet it's gorgeous.

I live in Georgia and we usually have 2 temperatures, hot or extremely hot and all are served with a big side of humidity (which works wonders for the hair ladies ). However, we have been experiencing some extremely cold temps lately and even had snow this past Monday. When it snows here, EVERYTHING shuts down because we have no way to deal with the roads & such. People are basically stuck in their houses until it thaws - oh what fun! It's a welcome change from all the heat but it was 16 degrees this morning, a GA girl just isn't used to this.

I moved here when i was five, but my family goes back during the summers. I also speak Bulgarian at home.

Elizabeth, I didn't hear about it, but then I have to confess that I don't watch the news very much. That sounds really scary. We don't have a lot of major crime here in Vacaville, but we've had a couple murders the last couple years, and the usual burglaries etc. Bombs, though, scary stuff!!
I thought it might be fun to find out where everyone is situated around the globe. I know not everyone is in the United States like I am.
I'll start. I live in Vacaville, Ca., (U.S.), which is about right in the middle between Sacramento and San Francisco. The weather's pretty mild, although it can pretty hot during the summer. We are not a huge town, which is great because it only takes 15 minutes to get from one side of town to the other. It's big enough though, that you don't usually have to go far if you want to eat out, go to a movie, or do some shopping.
My 17 year old daughter would not agree, though, as she made me take her to the Bay area to get her prom dress.
I've lived in Maryland, Virginia, Mississippi, and Nevada, as well as California. The only time I've been out of the country was when my aunt took me to Baja. There are a lot of places I've visited in the country, though, that stand out in my mind. I loved Hawaii, especially Maui. I also love the Shenandoah Valley. I wouldn't want to live there, but really like visiting New York City and Washington D.C. I know there are others, but this is getting long, and so I just want to say that probably my all-time favorite vacation destination is Disneyland. My husband says that I'd live there if I could.
