I really liked this story. It's very much a feel good love story.

There doesn't seem to be anything else by this author other than an online fiction called When Irish Eyes are Smiling posted in 2006 & 2007. I'll have to check that one out some time.

Hey thanks for bringing up Chester Himes! I just put Yesterday Will Make You Cry on my to-read list!

And, The Real Cool Killers was put on the classics list for high school summer reading this year. Well, it was either in the classics section or in the mystery section, I've forgotten now, but I loved spicing up the list with some "fresh" material. For so many years librarians keep the same authors and just switch books on the list. BORING! lol.

Cleon Lee | 2235 comments I am reading and enthralled by Duino Elegies by Rainer Maria Rilke for my upcoming Hot July fic. Oh my, so beautiful!

On M/M side, I just spent an entire day reading
When Irish Eyes Are Sparkling by Tom Collins . Such a sweet romance between two young men who are insecure, yet greatly in love with one another. The sex is hot too and although there are many sex scenes, every one of them is unique in its emotional aspect to the development of their relationships. The first love at first sight story that I adore.

I'm finally knee-deep in GhosTV and LOVING IT!!!! Like, it's the best book ever at the moment, the sweetest, most romantic, makes my heart flutter, and makes me all warm and fuzzy on the inside. I mean, seriously, that red ropy thing protecting Vic... wow... If I was a Victorian woman I'd be fainting right now from the sheer magnitude of it all! I love Jacob!

Cleon Lee | 2235 comments I just finished Shades of Gray by Brooke McKinley . OMG, guys! I owe eternal gratitude to whomever recced it to me! It's just like one of the most romantic, best books EVER! I just want to bawl like a baby when I read about their love and separation. *sniff* This is one of the top 10 books I like, EVER!

Honestly, sometimes I feel mad that gems like this & Josh' books cannot be more popular because people are so squeamish about 2 guys falling in love while some het romance trash are so popular.

Cheryl | 232 comments GhosTV is definitely one of the best of the series, and the whole series is just amazingly awesome, so that says a lot. You won't be dissapointed. The romance doesn't happen after a few chapters and for that I am glad. Also, the action, the characerization, & writing style is top notch! I can't stop reading even though I promised myself to write my Hot July fic today. lol.

The title really says it all, that everything is not black and white. There will be a lot of thought provoking & moral questions throughout the book, but delivered in ways that are non-preaching or intrusive.

I read this one before Zero at the Bone and I ended up liking Shades of Gray more (for some reason they're always compared to one another. ) I agree with you. It's a romantic story with an adrenaline kick that I really like when a writer can pull it off.

I also prefer this book over Zero at the Bone. For one, Zero is too long, IMHO, and the moral quandary is not as interesting as this one.

There are sooo many things to discuss, all of them good things. I'd love to hear what others think about this book. I am kind of surprised that this book is not more popular. Granted, this is not a conventional & fluffy romance, and some parts are not easy read, especially the violent parts.

I didn't care for the way Zero ended. It's really clear that they haven't reached their happily ever after yet, which comes across as a cheap cliffhanger for the next book. (Except so far there is no next book.) Give them their happy for now ending, and then start the next book, if you plan to write one, with those perfectly legit problems. The guys in Zero (don't remember their names off the top of my head) are so very different, different backgrounds and life experiences, that it makes sense that they'd have trouble settling into a life together. Just don't give us that and the end of the book and stop.

Well they were certainly as HFN the author has written so many shorts kinda exploring they everafter...

@Cleon, I agree, Shades of Grey is a fantastic book, certainly not an easy read. Some of the moments with Grey were so heartbreaking. I can't even remember my review, I read it months ago, but I do clearly remember thinking this book has a fantastic pace and the characters are so intense...I loved it, really loved it...they had such moments of pure selflessness (not sure if love...yet) but certainly sacrifice without hesitation...that felt so right, I bought the whole thing

Emanuela ~plastic duck~ (manutwo) | 1768 comments I haven't read Shades of Gray because it frightens me, I don't know why. I loved Zero and I fell in love with D, but I wish it had ended maybe a couple of chapters before the actual ending. The reunion was satisfying enough.

message 2885: by Cleon Lee (new)

Cleon Lee | 2235 comments My review is posted here: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/... .

I was about to sleep when I suddenly hit by a realization of why their love is so powerful, because it changed them fundamentally. Their love broke them and remade them into much better persons. The change was very painful for both of them, but they embraced it.

With Zero at the Bone, both characters didn't change much, except for D's realization that he's gay. But he already tried to make amends of his crime even before he fell in love with Jack, and Jack almost didn't change at all.

I had SoG on my Kindle for a long time before I read it, so I understand you being afraid. I'm not sure why I was, either.

I just read Mexican Heat last weekend and it reminded me of Shades of Gray if that helps you crack it. Definitely a bittersweet read, but very worthwhile.

There were parts I really liked about Zero but I was very unsatisfied at the end. The character arcs were stagnant, as you said. Ultimately I felt the HEA/HFN was false and that D would eventually (sooner rather than later) suck Jack dry emotionally. Maybe in a sequel we'll see some growth, but I ended up feeling like Jack was trapped. JMO.

The free short stories make their HEA much more believable, especially the one where they met D's sister's family. D's not as broken as he thought he was. D was raised in a loving family and his background was nowhere as terible as Danny (view spoiler), so I do think HEA is believable.

I rock. It is REALLY good, though. When you're done you might try The Protector by NL Gassert. It's not as good, but it's similar, and it takes place somewhere in Indonesia. Or Papua/New Guinea. Sorry, I know that's probably annoyingly vague, but hey! It's near you somewhere, right?

That's exactly how I did it. I think they get compared to each other because they came out at about the same time and have the whole "protector/protect" love thing going on. I think The Good Thief is a much better comparison.

Yeah, but they both wanted those changes before they met. It was just synchronicity. They helped each other become what they needed to become.

Should we move the rest of this over to the Candidates thread? I guess we're still discussing June, there, and we wouldn't want to confuse people.
