Wasn't it great?! And I HATE watching boxing on the television... but the fight scenes in Counterpunch were hypnotic. And the world building - wow. Really gives you something to chew over for a looooong time afterwards...

That's strange, huh?! ;)
I don't know anything about football (American, Australian...), but I adored Tigers and Devils... so maybe it's just all about strong feelings? And of course the way the story is told.
So, you don't actually have to like the subject to be fascinated by it. I'm more familiar with visual arts and that's how it works for me with that form of art, anyway.
Although the subject really wasn't sports in these two books at all. :)
... Dear sweet heaven, did I just have conversation with myself alone making comment and then denying it?! Because I do it in real life all the time out loud... but it scares me now, when I see it written like this. Jeez.

Another good example is

I mean, furry animals and football players?!? But it's one of the best books I've ever read, together with the sequel.

That's the only logical explanation... ;)

Thanks for the recommendation, Antonella! Better furry animals than furry football players...? ;)

Ehmm: the furry animals *are* the football players. It's is an anthropomorphic novel...

Oh... OH! So the characters are actually animals that act like humans? That should be interesting... haven't tried that kind of story before. Well, If you don't count Aesop's Fabels and Orwell's Animal Farm and so on... Anyway, that doesn't sound too bad. Like I said furry animals I can deal with, but really, really furry guys scare me a bit... (but let's just leave it like that for now...) *grin*

I have that on my "intriguing" shelf. Meaning I haven't decided yet. Is it well written?

Eh, it's a bit rough. The story telling is good and the whole furry football players part was unique. I really hadn't read any anthropomorphic fiction before. I'd say the writing was competent and the author's voice matched the story well. It sounded like a college age guy writing about college age guys.

IMO it is an excellent read. The world building is great, there is humor, conflict, some drama and an overall believability of the characters: they definitely do not behave as teenager girls (something I find irritating in some m/m books).
The average rating on GR is 4.20, which also means something...

I've got chapters 8 - 10 sitting on my Kindle right now and I'm AFRAID to read them. Partly I'm afraid of what might happen even though I trust Ginn -- it's just going to be so horribly painful before it gets better. And partly I don't want it to end.

Any recs?"
Wings of Equity by Sean Kennedy, although some people didn't think it was steampunk enough...

Duet for Tenor and Transradial Orthosis
by shukyou
It's about a guy who has a very bad steam powered orthotic hand, and meets up with an inventor who makes him a better one. -----

I was looking at the reviews of that one. I couldn't decide. It's on my maybe baby list.

Oh, I'm sorry I had forgotten them... In fact I found ''Wings of Equity'' good, but these two are excellent!

Ariel Tachna, The Inventor's Companion, but not sure it's your cup of tea with the semi-slavery thing going on. The relationship itself is very romantic and not slavery at all.

Ah. Very good! I didn't realize either of those was Steampunk.

I'd say it depends on how much of a purist you're being about your steampunk. Both have elements of fantasy in a steampunk setting.

I enjoyed Stolen Hearts. The romance was very gentle and completely non-graphic, which was an interesting change of pace.

Havemercy by Jaida Jones and Danielle Bennett. It was fun and well written.

I put that one up and then took it off again; it has a steam-punk feel but it is really more fantasy. But I did like it too.

How do I identify steampunk, then? I've come to think of it as magic plus clunky-mechanical (like the way the Wild, Wild West Movie looked, all brass and copper and rivets galore.

Any recs?"
The Tea Demon by Cornelia Grey. It's super short, but has: a bar fight, scorching hot sex scene, insane love for the proper cup of tea and tons of humor. ^^
Dire Straits by Megan Derr. This also has fantasy/paranormal elements. I call it gay Gunslinger. XD
Boots for the Gentleman by Augusta Li and Eon de Beaumont. I had some issues with it, but the actual steampunk part was beyond awesome.
Island of Icarus - I didn't read this, but I saw that some of my fellow readers liked it a lot.
I'm not recommending Ginn Hale, because I assume you've read all her books. ^^

Teahouse is good too. I have nervous feelings that Tj and Amal won't end well, but I love the way the artwork is done. :0

Just curious, but why?

I don't believe Richard Morgan's books are called steampunk, but they are still good so I recommend them even so :)

I can't answer for Sagajo, but this is my review (3 stars):
I liked the steampunk aspect and the worldbuilding. I didn't like the general sappiness (I admit my level of tolerance is low), the fact that it was 510 PDF-pages -> the story would have been better if shorter and tigher written, the lack of flaws in both MC and their recurrent chick-with-dick behaviour, the simplistic plot.
Just for your information, ''Mongrel'' and ''The God Eaters" got 5 stars from me.

This was also 3 stars for me: a bit bland, not the kind of book that grips you for the plot or for the characters.

Mongrel is one of my favoritest ever.
I also liked The Mercenary.

Unfortunately, I agree about the content editing thing. I feel the same about A Solid Core of Alpha.

These recs are all great. I'm basically studying the genre, so it's not like I've defined what I'm looking for. I was glancing over Amazon reviews of classic steampunk novels and it does seem to me that the world-building and the technology are crucial. Then again most of the classics aren't focused on romance.

I gotta warn you about The Inventor's Companion, the focus is clearly on the romance & not the steampunk building. The world building focuses more on the society aspect than the steampunk.

Huh. I never thought of that as steampunk.

Sorry for not answering sooner but the whole prostitution angle is just a mess to me. I don't understand why someone would want to make a romantic story from this concept. So much energy is put into degrading situations instead of character interaction/development.
