I started poking around Nalini Singh's Psy/Changeling series again. Sure, it's het romance, but the world-building sucks me in, and the characters are likable. Also, finished Make Your Words Work: Proven Techniques for Effective Writing, for Fiction and Nonfiction. A family friend had dumped it off on me a while ago, and it had been collecting dust for a while. After reading it, I have to say it caught much more of my interest than it had any right to.
I really liked the opening words:
"Can writing be taught?
No. Throw this book away."
I keep forgetting to buy the Larton Chronicles, and I really want to read it, too. It's been on my to-do list, but I'm not crossing off as much as I want or need to these days.
I just finished Shades of Gray by Brooke McKinley. It was really good! I'm such a sucker for FBI agent books :) Especially ones with not completely irrational HEA's.
You'll find a few fans of ''Shades of Gray'' round here!
I've almost finished Bloodlines :'-( and today it's Crescendo, I've been waiting for this book for a year!

Right now I'm starting with Envy - haven't read anything from J. R. Ward for a while, so that's going to be quite nice... I hope. And since you guys are all hype about Larton Chronicles I just had to order it. That and Josh Lanyon Collected #1 paperback I'm going to be reading on the beach during the Christmas break. I can't wait!!!!

I read the first book Slave to Sensation and have tried many times to continue with the series (since I have few of the books), but for some reason I keep putting the sequels away again and again. I don't have anything against Nalini Singh's writing and I liked the Guild Hunter books. So I actually can't explain why this happens...

I think the fact that the characters are supposed to be cold because of their conditioning makes every book a bit slow before something really happens. But when it happens it's good. Like you, I have to convince myself to read the books, but then I like them :)

Yep. That just might be it. I know that you and me, we have a very similar taste of books, so I guess I'm gonna have to give this series a second (or the tenth...) chance. ;)

It does sound pretty good. I love FBI stories. :-D
You really should read it! It's an excellent book. I wish I'd get more stories like that one.
Mind you, we could also keep it as book of the month for January!

I personally don't feel the books start off that slow, but that's my personal opinion. :P
Strangely enough, I've never liked the Guild Hunter's series as much. Still haven't read the third book.

Oh, I loved Envy! I was never able to get into her books until the Fallen Angels series, but it's got me hooked. There's even a little m/m love in the third (fourth?) book :)

Yes, actually Envy is the third one and by most accounts the best so far. And the one with m/m action (now that i looked it up). First two were Covet and Crave. I never remember titles :(

But I wouldn't recommend reading them out of order, for obvious story reasons. :P
Yeah, I always liked them as well, but sometimes I feel the romance gets a bit formulaic. But the overarching plot's engaging. :D
Right now I'm reading Long Tall Drink. I'm having trouble getting into it, more from my own lack of focus than any fault in the story. I may set it aside for a while and come back in a day or so when I'm in the right mood.

Yep, I'm enjoying Envy so far (20% read)! And now I have some m/m action to wait for - Yay! Ward's BDB series was the one that got me interested about m/m genre in the first place (still waiting for Blay and Qhuinn to end up together for good...). And pretty fast I realized that the m/m story lines in her books just wouldn't be enough for me... It was like whenever a new BDB book was released, I browsed it through just flipping the pages in hurry and trying to spot the words connected to Blay and Qhuinn. Sad, right? So even though I've now found Jordan Castillo Price, Josh and many other wonderful writers within m/m genre, the BDB boys will always have a special place in my heart! ;)

That's funny because when I started seeing all those "Qhuay" references, I was curious about the series, but I knew I'd just do what you said, flip through til I found them. I'll just wait til I hear that they've had their HEA and read that one :)

I finished Crescendo yesterday, I loved it, and I'm currently reading Tuareg, struggled a bit at the beginning, but the main couple is interesting, good anticipation.

Different readers, different tastes... I loved it, as I generally love all things by Sarah Black. I wish she would write again something longer though.

I read it when it first came out. I'm not a huge fan of this author, but I enjoyed it. To be honest, I can't really remember anything specific about it except it was a western of some sort. But I'll get the sequel because I know it made me want to continue w/the story. That's a pretty good sign, right?
I've got an enthusiastic rec for y'all. I just finished Dark Edge of Honor by Voinov and Etzweiler. It was absolutely crackerjack. The main voice behind Special Forces is heard here; and if you liked that, you'll like this. Strong characters, strong story. Novelette length. I actually thought I'd like to have it in hardcopy, put it on my shelf.
I just started reading Hot Head because everyone has given it such high marks. The blurb sounded kind of awful to me, but I'm willing to give it a shot. So far (10%), it's better than expected.

So far (10%), it's better ..."The beginning of Hot Head was hard going for me. That's where most of the 9/11 scenes are, and I have a hard time with that subject. Once I got past that, I enjoyed the story quite a bit.
Yeah, the beginning was kind of tough, but definitely well written. I'm about halfway through now and really enjoying it. Although I'm having minor panic attacks along with the MC about how this is going to turn out for them.

I just picked up Risky Maneouvers by Voinov and Barbara Sheridan. There's a voice of authenticity that runs through Voinov's work, regardless of co-authors.
Actually, I'm impressed that he works frequently and so successfully with co-authors. That's an achievement right there.

I note that he describes his own work as "florid," and all I can think of is that line from Princess Bride where Montoya says, "I do not think that word means what you think it means." ;-P

If it had been only the blurb I probably wouldn't have read it but somehow I ended up reading it for a group read and was pleasantly surprised. I liked it quite a bit.

It's probably better once you sink into the story. Very often the beginning of a novel from a new writer is going to be very self-conscious.
But I've got so much else to read right now, I definitely don't need to go searching for new stuff to love. Maybe when I finally catch up with all the stuff waiting on my kindle -- and all the print books I keep stockpiling as though I didn't HAVE a kindle....

lol. Hot Head's brash and loud, very much like Damon's online presence. Really untidy, ideas and great scenes thrown together kind of randomly. Written like he kept having new Wow, Lookee! ideas and throwing them in too, being sure to cover all the expected romance bases at the same time. In other words, it has lots of good stuff, not necessarily all tied together. Editor, anyone?

I'm actually reading non-fiction for a change. I just got 40 Years of Queen. Queen is my favorite band and Freddie Mercury is basically my favorite person ever. The book has all this cool removable memorabilia in it and tons of gorgeous photos!
I'm (almost) half way through King's The Dark Tower series, I finished Voinov's Counterpunch and enjoyed it immensely, which is a big deal because I usually don't like slave fiction, and now I don't know: continue with DT, go for new Sarah Black or latest Voinov's book or new Brandon Sanderson... you see my problem. ^^
