Oprah's Summer Reading List

I know for whatever reason there are those that dig their feet in when it comes to Oprah suggestions and I haven't loved all of them but some have been great imo (east of eden, pillars of the earth). If nothing else it is something to discuss. Here is her summer reading list. It actually has some books that have been nominated here and some I know some of you are reading. Anything look particularly good to you?

I already had My Name is Mary Sutter on my Wish List, and I've added Kings of the Earth: A Novel and What Is Left the Daughter. I doubt I'll get to them this summer, however.

I received an ARC copy of The Passage, and really liked it. Here is the review I posted here on Goodreads.

I received a copy of this through Goodreads First reads, and have to admit I thoroughly loved it. It is an epic novel, a monster of a book, an apocalyptic original, which really kept me enthralled. And I loved the fact that I predicted nothing that happened in this book. This was not one of those where I could figure out what was going to happen next way ahead of time. Things in this book surprised me over and over. And for me that is a good thing. Even reading the synopsis, or the info on the back of the book: those details are all just the tiny tip of the iceberg. A great, original story. Looking forward to more.

No, I haven't. Of course, I read Twain's classic years ago.

The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake has been on my to-read list for a while.

I've heard a lot about The Passage, but I'm not convinced that I want to read it.

The Passage is in my pile of stuff to read this summer. My brother is reading it, so I'm awaiting his judgment since I have like 100 other books in the pile ahead of it.

A couple of the others look alright to me, but I don't have much desire to read the rest of them. But then I don't usually enjoy Oprah's picks that much. For me, they've always been either just alright, meh, or sucky. Her taste doesn't generally agree with me.

Lemon Cake is in my next package coming from Bookswim so I'll be reading that in the coming weeks. I'll have to check out the other one.

I would urge everyone to read The Madonnas of Echo Park by Brando Skyhorse. Brando and I served together on a panel at Borders Columbus Circle NY to discuss summer reading past and present and he is a great person. Not to mention the fact that he's written a truly wonderful book. Nor was his path to publication easy - it took him twenty years. So, his success is very well deserved. I have read My Name is Mary Sutter and The Lost Summer of Louis May Alcott and am about a quarter of the way through The Passage. You can't go wrong with any of these three.
