I started listening to His for the Holidays, and I have to say the guy who reads my story has the perfect voice for that character. *Perfect.* But he pronounces Noel's name as No-el (like a girl's name or like Christmas) and it bothered me so much I couldn't keep listening.

I still have to listen to the other stories as soon as I get some time.

I agree - the voice is perfect. And narration is great too. I'm relieved now when you say it should be pronounced differently, I'm not sure how (I imagined it should be with "o" stressed). It didn't bother me that much but I thought it was a bit strange.
This reminds me that I wanted to ask if an author gets a say when it comes to choosing a narrator for their book and if the narrator gets some guidelines for reading/pronunciation from the author. Judging from what you say, no and no.

What DID bother me was Robert's intonations. I imagined him to sound less... erm.. self-admiring :) The narrator also mispronounced the Russian word for "gay" :) (But I guess that would be really too much to ask :))

"Icecapade" is the best in the anthology imho (and it seems to be common agreement)... I liked other stories too (except for "Nine Lights over Edinburgh" which I partly skipped, it annoyed me too much)

Heather C (heathercook) Hey Josh,
I read both of the I Spy stories last night. I have to say that they were not at all what I was expecting. (I don't read book blurbs/descriptions) but I really enjoyed them. I liked that we were able to see their past relationship through Mark's dreams.

Is Mark and Stephen's journey complete or will see them again in a future story?

I tried to print something out last night and it went to this IDIOT program called One Note and it took me forever to delete the damn thing so I could just print out a simple page that I needed.

It keeps trying to "share" everything which, in my opinion is a dangerous and stupid default to have on a computer.

No? What were you expecting, Heather?

I think Mark and Stephen's journey is probably complete. Which is to say no additional storylines have occurred to me.

No, we have no say -- which is fine, except it might be wise to check with the author where there's any question of name pronunciation. Granted, I'm probably the only person so bothered by it that I can't listen. Probably not a big deal for most readers.

I didn't even get as far as Robert's voice, so I can't comment. I couldn't get through the epilogue! Which is a shame because I really thought the narrator's voice was perfect.

Josh, Haha, I'm so spoiled to all your mysteries!! And those were totally focused on their relationship. I enjoyed it a lot. I was perfectly happy with the conclusion, just curious if I would be seeing them again. Thanks!

Yowza! It's the Facebook Operating System! Run away! Run away!

My new telecommuting "network" clashes with my home printer, so when it's running, I can't print at home, period (oh, and if I hit "print" in my actual work applications, even though I'm at home, the stuff will spew out of the printer at the office!). And that's a very frustrating position for an editor to be in, grrr.

Kyra | 3 comments Hi Josh! I just wanted to ask you have you thought about revisiting Jake and Adrien in the near future? I know the series ended but it would be so much fun to see how they are living together, or Adrien's new family's reaction to Jake and vice versa. An interview with J&A would be great too. Can't you tell that I miss them? :D

Finished I Spy #1, loved it very much! Did I mention how much I love the action in your books? That's besides loving the erotica and the romance :)
(Funny thing that "Maurice" was mentioned there, I just finished listening to "Maurice" audiobook, never heard of it before. Now I know there's a movie too, must watch it :))

I for one would love to see how they are adapting to life together. I would love to see Jake with Adrien's family. And as for the sex scenes... having Jake fulfill that little fantasy of Adrien's would be a hoot.

It's a great scene.

message 484: by JPerceval (new)

JPerceval | 154 comments I think the Jake & Adrien line that will live forever with me is their first time, when Adrien worries about Jake enjoying himself "without improper use of kitchen utensils." It's just one of those deathless phrases!

But I like the againt-the-wall scene too, for pure passion. ;-)

message 485: by Heather C (new)

Heather C (heathercook) I think I would actually enjoy rereading this series. My brain is usually anti-reread, but I read it so fast I think I missed a lot a I hate that. Its still my favorite m/m series, although the genre is still very new to me.

I think he might make a little fuss ... just for the sake of clarifyng that it won't happen on regular basis... But he might also get used to the idea.

What I would love to see in Adrien/Jake's future:

I like Adrien as a bottom-only. I have always said, it takes so much of oneself to completely submit physically to your partner (not in a bdsm-way, but in a bottom/top way :). I think it's incredibely multi-dimensional when you have a man who is a proclaimed bottom; who loves the feel of another bigger, stronger man taking control in bed - or elsewhere. This is one of the things I really liked best about Adrien - he's a strong, intelligent bottom without being emotionally or professionally dependent upon Jake

It would be interesting to bring an "obstacle" into the relationship such as a rival to Jake. Would love someone who maybe plays some mind games with Adrien, slowly seducing him, making him see things that aren't there - in his relationship with Jake. Adrien seems to be the least likely candidate to allow himself to be manipulated by someone, but it happens anyway and Jake witnesses this and can't get to Adrien and make him see it, etc.

Hot, hot, hot sheet-crumpling-activities for these two would be GREAT! I like the idea of sex in "other" places, especially the bookstore! Maybe have Jakes D/s tendancies come through a little - but not the bdsm stuff.

Josh, I just love the fact that in most of your books - if not all now that I think about it - at least one of your protags/mc's has a chronic condition or injury of some sort to deal with. This is one of the things that instantly grabbed me in Fair Game (the first book of yours that I read) and then especially in the AE series. The fact that Adrien had a heart condition was brilliant! O.k., not that he had it, but that we got to see a MC who had to live his life, fall in love, run a business, etc. with a disability of sorts. That is so real! I don't want to see Adrien have a relapse after his surgery, but I would like to at least see him still be aware of his need to "tend to" his heart in some manner.

Wow, didn't mean to get long winded, but the AE series is just so ripe for continuation! But I love the fact that I get Fair Play as well :)

Duly taking note of all this. ;-D

The chronic injury/illness thing. Lia was kind enough to put together a spread sheet that you can access on Google that actually breaks down things like stories where the character has an illness versus simply the time-honored temporary injury incurred in the line of action.

https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?k...

(If that doesn't work the link is in the left side bar of The Works page on my website.)

The sex in bed thing...hmmm. I wonder if I tend to have characters fall into bed because I'm always sleep-deprived? ;-D Bed always sounds so GOOD to me.

I think there is something incredibley erotic about a man saying "I want you in my bed", so nothing wrong with that EVER!

Also on that subject, dirty talk is always nice :) I love an Alpha male character that refers to his lover as "baby" during lovemaking - that's just hot as hell!!

Heather C wrote: "Yes, to ever thing said above. But I would love to see Jake submit to Adrien, just once"

I think if it was important to Adrien, Jake would indulge him. That's basically what it would be. An indulgence.

The thing is, Adrien is not always -- in all his relationships -- a bottom. The dynamic changes depending on the partner, and the needs and desires of both partners.

Blaine (blainedarden) reread 'The Dickens With Love' today ... actually, completely lost myself in it while waiting for over one and a half hours for my foster son's truancy hearing to begin (they were running 'a little' late). I finished it about five minutes before we were finally called.

And I loved it just as much as the first time I read it.
Sedgwick Crisparkle was an adorable character and James, I couldn't help but feel for him.
I'm not the most observant reader, so my reviews/opinions will never be complete, but I loved the little hints of the manuscript, loved the ocelot (even though I had no idea what that was the first time I read it - see, learned something :) ), loved how James gave relationship/crawling out of your shell advice to Darcy and she ended up getting a date.

The thing that didn't hit me until I started writing this, was that both men, in their own way, experienced a life changing incident. Only, where Sedgwick's near miss incident caused him to decide to be true to himself and follow his dream, James has been struggling to keep his head above water.

Somehow my two favourite parts were James asking the ocelot what it wanted to drink, and James admitting his arrogance, but at the same time calling Sedgwick on his arrogance.

Great writing, brilliant characterisation ... as always :)
I don't think I could ever tire of your writing. You keep managing to draw me in every single time.

My very prayer late at night in my wee trundle bed.

Thank you for that lovely summary -- it's been a long time since I've looked at the story and the comment about the ocelot made me smile. I'd forgotten that.

After I finish 'Skinflick' by Joseph Hansen I think I'll re-read 'Don't look Back'. I loved the amnesia angle.

I still have plenty of books on my to read and re-read lists.
Every time I intent to buy the 'Petit Morts' books, something interferes. This time my eldest wanted to buy a xbox360 game from amazon.co.uk, but needed two more pounds to get the free delivery (not to mention mummy ordering for him, since he doesn't have a visa card - thank God!). In my enthusiasm I ended up buying the 'gay male sleuth in print and film' and 'the charioteer' by Mary Renault (yes, really, I'd never read it or heard of it before), putting 'Petit Morts' on hold ... again.
Somehow an ebook library doesn't sound so bad ... (and I don't mean the new kindle feature, since I prefer epub and lrf format)

You can't go wrong with Hansen. Skinflick is one of my favorites. One of the most engaging femme characters I've ever run across in fiction -- especially interesting is how uncomfortable Dave is with...gosh, I forget his name.

Anyway, I do love and heartily recommend everything by Hansen.
