I am doing what you are doing.
Finishing Petit Morts. Are you going to read the above two Hc and Emanuela mentioned?
Then I guess I should start the DH.

No puppy yet, Lori. Not until I can spend a little time with him. Her. Him. It. :-D

If you like mysteries, I think it's a good choice. If you read FG for the relationship stuff, then I'd go for one of the more romantic stories.

Stories where the mystery serves mostly as backdrop would be Don't Look Back, Dark Horse & White Knight, A Vintage Affair, I Spy Something Bloody, and...The Dickens With Love. Oh, and Icecapade.
I think those are the ones that are mostly romance?

Don't forget I Spy Something Wicked, the sequel to I Spy Something Bloody. And what about A Ghost of A Chance?
And though I loved the WWI/Royal Flying Corps background in Out Of The Blue, to me that particulary story has always been an intensely romantic one.

Is it weird, but when I think of your stories, I don't immediately think 'romance'. They aren't romance per se, but are mysteries, or fantasy, or what-have-you with romance on the side. The protags might have an interest in each other (as well as sex or a history or ideas), but their main focus is something else - solving a murder (or clearing their name from being accused of murder), finding a book, discovering the truth behind an event, a job to do... whatever it is, that's the end result above all else. If along the way, they discover the one they're interested in is interested in them, so much the better. :)
I was thinking of your stories and trying to find one where one main protag was trying to woo the other protag, with a bit of adventure on the side, and could not find a single one. Oh, wait... Vintage Affair. Definitely one protag wooing the other despite what the other protag's focus was on.

I would agree with that assessment, Merith. The stories are generally about one (sometimes two) guys discovering something about himself in the course of solving a mystery of some sort -- and falling in love.
I think that's why I feel slightly impatient with reviews that find the romance lacking -- these are readers who inevitably expect the romance to be the paramount thing.
I'm delighted that I've found favor with romance readers, but I don't think my books are first and foremost romances (although I understand that that's what most readers enjoy most about them). It sounds contradictory, I suppose. Maybe it is.

A lot of readers are just not into mystery. That's okay. I'm usually bored by romance that doesn't have something else going on -- some adventure or crime or SOMETHING. Different strokes for different folks!

Hope you enjoy it, Norma!

Isn't the basis of most any story a conflict and finding a resolution to the conflict? No matter if the conflict is internal, external or between a couple? Your stories tend to encompass more than one type of conflict and some that don't always have a resolution by the end of the story (Dark Woods, and the drinking problem. It's identified and the reader is hopeful there will one day be a resolution, but it's not there by the last page).
That's one thing that makes me impatient with romance stories is the resolution of issues in 200 pages or less. Issues that would realistically take weeks if not years to over come. And yeah, I know that romance stories are not supposed to be realistic, but a woman can dream, right?
And maybe if I continue this discussion, I should find a different place to write about it. Doesn't really belong in the introduction topic, does it? :)

Josh as an author was recommended to me as a romance author. I'd heard lots of buzz and his name wasn't unfamiliar to me. So I checked some reviews on goodreads and picked up a few books. When I tried Fair Game I have to say I was surprised that it wasn't a romance. Mainly because I absolutely expected it to be. But when I sat down and thought about it, I reallized that it was a really good book. I started out as a mystery reader. I slowly graduated into romance after that. Now I primarily read romantic suspense because I find I enjoy a balance of both. Especially if it's a really dark story. I need a little happy to make me feel better. However I still love a good mystery!
Merith, I realize this is the introduction topic, but for me this topic is also an introduction to Josh's books. I've only read the one and I'm not very familiar with the rest. So this thread fits right in.

I agree! That's one of the reasons I love In a Dark Wood --as you mentioned, it doesn't end with a cheap resolution of an addiction that may take a long time (and a lot of backsliding) on the road to recovery.

I'm new to Good Reads and, thus, new to this group, but certainly not new to your writing, which I love, love, love! I believe I've read everything you have currently available. Sadly, I missed out on the story you included as a promo for buying Strange Fortune when it was first released. Any word on when that might be made available to those of us who foolishly failed to monitor your new releases as closely as we should have? Withholding it has been a harsh punishment, indeed, and I have learned my lesson, I swear!
Thanks for your good stories, engaging characters and lovely writing. Keep up the good work!

I checked and The French Have A Word For It is currently still available from Josh's GLBT Bookshelf page. There you can also check if you have read every story available *g*. The page can be found here:

Oh, Liade, you are my new best friend! Thanks so much for the link.
Hi Ashley! Welcome to the group -- thank you for your kind words.
Sorry to be so scarce at the moment, guys, but it's actually heartwarming to see how you old-timers take such good care of the newcomers. ;-) It's nice to see this sense of community.
Anyway, four more days to wind up This Rough Magic and then the edits and then (hopefully PLEASE GOD) the normal schedule I've been talking about for so long no one believes in it but me.

Norma, I enjoy writing romance but I generally need more of a plot to hang my relationship stories on. It's probably a lack of imagination on my part that I can't figure out how to fill the space of a romance novel without killing someone or sending them on a quest, but I've written very few romances that aren't also mysteries or adventures.

Barb, I'm very fond of the DG series. It's just good old fashioned action-adventure. So it's very relaxing to write. And hopefully a lot of fun to read!

I just recently finally read the Adrien English series, devouring it in a couple of days, and then immediately went and downloaded another 6 of Josh's books. I managed to get through Fair Game, which I also loved - and a reread of AE - before my Kindle broke. 3 years of working perfectly and, of course, it breaks when I'm dying to read the rest of the books I downloaded!
I just have to say thanks Josh for the wonderful books you write. I'm so glad that I've finally found your writing and have a lot more to catch up on!
I'm planning to read A Vintage Affair next, and then Dangerous Ground. Though I really am trying to space these out so I don't read them all in the next two weeks.

Thanks Josh. I think so too. I recently downloaded DG and The Dark Horse.

My condolences. I know all technology craps out eventually, but the day mine dies it will be The Scream Heard 'Round the World. At least the price to replace it is much lower than what you paid three years ago!

MUCH cheaper! I actually ordered it the day I finally gave up on being able to fix it, and it should be here soon. But these last few days without it have been driving me insane!
And then I decided that since I had that coming I should order some more new books to read on it. ;)

I'm hoping it was merely wounded in action and not down for the count.

Just over 3 years. I got it for Christmas the year it came out (2007). I had to replace the battery once, but other than that I never, ever had problems with it...until now when it finally gave up. The screen was still in good shape, the buttons all worked, and it was still as quick as it was the day I got it.
And I loved it. It was the best thing for reading I've ever had. I had been looking at the latest generation ever since it came out, but especially since I got my mom one for Christmas this last year. It's a huge improvement and I'm really excited to get my new one. I went with the wi-fi only one because I mostly download books when I'm at home anyways (or hook it up to my computer), so I didn't think the extra $50 for 3G was needed.
I could go on and on about how much I love my Kindle, as well as all the research I did before buying one, but I'll stop before I start to ramble (though I'm happy to share) ;)

So sorry about the Kindle. I'd be heartbroken too.

You're going through them at the speed of light!

Ouch. I've had it since December 2007 and it seems to be doing well, but just in case, I've gotten the newer one as well as back up. I've got over 2000 ebooks already and unfortunately, Amazon doesn't have an ereader for Linux, and the Android reader just doesn't cut it, so I don't have much of an alternative if my original dies.
If you're running Windows or a Mac and haven't downloaded a Kindle reader, I'd highly recommend it, so you're not completely hosed if your Kindle dies.
It's my pipeline to sanity and the drugs of my choice. Books are crack cocaine to me, and if you need a fix at 3am, there's nothing like turning over in your bed and starting a new book with the click of a finger. I'm not sure I'd survive all the travel I do without it...

Huh. Kindle or Significant Other--tough choice!

Huh. Kindle or Significant Other--tough choice!"
At least you don't have to worry about kicking the Kindle out of bed for eating crackers.
