Saw you over in another thread already but welcome to the group Pat! Kenyon Minions is a group of nice people from what I have seen. Hope it's what you're looking for.

Andrea Perhay | 1 comments Hi my name is Andrea and i live in Saint Clair Shores Michigan. At the moment I'm reading seize the night. My husband brought me a kindle for my birthday and i have all the dark hunter books so I'm reading them all in order...

My love for these books is the reason for my trip to New Orleans this august

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Hi Andrea, welcome to the group. I hope you enjoy your trip to New Orleans. I've wanted to go and experience the culture as well do to the story. :)

Jennifer | 1747 comments Welcome to the group Andrea! I live near New Orleans o_o.

message 505: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Cool beans Amaya. Although I hope you and your family weren't too badly affected by Katrina when all that went down.

message 506: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 1747 comments Nah, not too bad. My sister's family was though. Only good thing about Katrina is that it wiped out some of the crime out in New Orleans. Unfortunately it just went to being as bad as ever again. Gosh, I wish it were like it was during my parents generation out there.

message 507: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (last edited Feb 29, 2012 05:04PM) (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Yea I bet. Can only imagine the scamming cons are cooking up too. Hopefully it will get better as the years go on.

message 508: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 1747 comments I doubt it. It was really bad when I was little but it got even worse over so many years. There's so many problems it's unreal (before and after Katrina). But we can hope. Haha, maybe one day everyone in the world will finally decide to just get along with everyone!

message 509: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Oh man that would be the day, lol.

message 510: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 1747 comments By the way, Andrea, I just realized anything I said on New Orleans might have a negative effect on you wanting to go to New Orleans. Sorry about that if it did. Tourist stuff is fine from what I hear, lol, so no need to worry ^.^. It's just if you live there. The big tourist parts of New Orleans are different. By the way, Cafe Du Monde is very good. If you're in other cities near by they also have that place. The easiest one to get to is in the city called Kenner inside of the Esplanade Mall (if you'll be anywhere near there that is). That mall has changed a lot but it still has the coffee place (cafe du monde). If you need any info on the area I'm more than glad to tell you whatever I know.

message 511: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 1747 comments P.S. The coffee pretty much tastes the same as the other cafes over here in my opinion but be sure to get an order of beignets. Those are really good and also messy because of the powdered sugar, lol. My Mom makes them sometimes too as a treat.

message 514: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 1747 comments I love the old style of New Orleans as well. There's another series that brings in a couple traditions from it, which is mostly the coffee, lol. It's called Spider's Bite. Pretty good series. Haven't read the whole thing yet but so far so good.

PepperP0t | 180 comments I've read Elemental Assassin's ... except the last one, its in that scary TBR mountain range that will topple over any second

message 516: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments And I have yet to start them. But those covers look great and tempting me every time.

message 517: by PepperP0t (new)

PepperP0t | 180 comments They're pretty good and it is an overarching story so you have to read in order

message 518: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments I think there are very few series I haven't read in order come to think of it. Only read out of order depending on how available they are at the library.

message 519: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 1747 comments Pat's right. It would a lot easier to read that series in order, and the covers are very nice. Lol, I haven't read very many series in order either, just a few so far (and that's only been since last year).

Ah, but if they took the hot naked men off the cover of some of the PNR, when will we ever have a legit reason to drool over a 6 pack?

It's ok. That's how I always used to end up reading stuff out of order most of the time, except it was in the book store. Back then the longest series I ever read was only 3 books long.

Aestas Book Blog (aestasbookblog) I'm still of the firm belief that they should make public-friendly front covers and put our drool-able 6-packs on the inside flap or something...

message 526: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 1747 comments Hm, that's a good idea if they are going to add a picture. I have some books like that. It's nice to have the "public-friendly" covers when it comes to having to keep from getting weird looks from your parents (if you still live with them), lol.

Oh I've seen some of the other country covers that aren't so drool worthy. And even some of the covers they do for re-prints on most books. And good God do they suck in my opinion. Either too dark looking or if they just have the woman up there, she usually looks like a crazed prostitute or something. Or worse they get models that don't even fit any of the main characters in the story. So a rather damned if you do and damned if you don't situation. I'll add too that the abs on the cover really are pretty tame compared to some of the historical romance covers. I swear some of those look a step away from being "ravished" every time.

I hate it when they used models that don't fit the story at all. It's so annoying. They may as well just use regular cover art. There used to be some really nice cover art on books but since they've been using so many more with models I noticed the covers that do use art don't really go that extra step of looking as nice as they used to. There still are some nice ones though.

ya but still... romance books would get ridiculed by people who arent avid romance reads MUCH less if the covers were less soft-porny. I'm not saying I dont appreciate a good ab-shot. I just think a lot more people would be comfortable reading them in public if they were more tame. No to mention, a lot more guys would be comfortable ADMITTING they even read them if the covers were different.

My husband reads most of the books I do but he'll deny it to his grave if you ask him to his face cuz he knows the 'image' that goes with romance books.

Romance books make up one of (or possibly THE) biggest book markets but you hardly ever see a person out in public reading one.

I think authors like Sherrilyn Kenyon have got the right idea with their latest books

Acheron (Dark-Hunter, #15) by Sherrilyn Kenyon No Mercy (Dark-Hunter, #19; Were-Hunter, #6) by Sherrilyn Kenyon Bad Moon Rising (Dark-Hunter, #18) (Were-Hunter, #5) by Sherrilyn Kenyon Born of Silence (The League, #5) by Sherrilyn Kenyon

I think more authors should follow that suit instead of

Dark Taste of Rapture (Alien Huntress, #6) by Gena Showalter Demon from the Dark (Immortals After Dark, #10) by Kresley Cole Dark Desires After Dusk (Immortals After Dark, #6) by Kresley Cole

I mean even the title : Dark Desires After Dark... sigh. "No Mercy", "The Guardian" are much more public friendly without seeming like you are just reading porn.

And then if they want to put a super hot guy's pic on an inside flap or something to still give us something to drool over, it would still be a book you can comfortable admit in public that you are reading.

And I agree with you Amaya, it bugs the hell out of me when the cover model doesn't fit the story. I'd rather have no model than a wrongly matched one.

Just my opinion....

message 532: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments True, you make good points Aestas. I just think though that in their minds if they don't put some hint of something romantic or physically romancing on the cover it won't be precieved as a romance story at all. Could also be that the initial marketing approach for the genre was the couples and showing skin and it was highly successful so they don't want to lose value for the genre if they went more subtle.

And come to think of it. I actually thought most guys wouldn't admit to reading PNR books just cause it was a romance. Cover opinions not withstanding.

I'll admit that I do like the designs on some of the later SK books as well. Although I still don't fully know what they mean aside from Ash's book. And I also wonder if other readers have picked up those books and bought them for the design but read them and were still bummed they were part of the romance genre and not a regular fantasy story.

I never thought of that, about romance books being possibly one of the biggest book markets but hardly ever seeing someone in public reading them. That is so true. Very good point made. If they had regular covers and put a picture of the character on the inside of the flap or made it a first page in the book and used a less 'sex' related title then a lot more people would most likely read them in public. Quite a few of Kat Martin's books have the picture on the first page of the book with just a regular cover. Haha, we could always resort to sticking the books inside of the "War and Peace" book! Make it look like we're reading that instead.

message 534: by Aestas Book Blog (last edited Mar 05, 2012 07:38PM) (new)

Aestas Book Blog (aestasbookblog) I disagree that guys still woukdnt openly admit to reading Romance if it was marketed differently. It's allllll about marketing. Because marketing changes the way the public sees things. If the public "saw" romance books in a different light, reading them wouldn't have the same embarrassing feeling that it has now.

I agree that SK's books don't specifically show that they are a romance book to someone who hasn't read the boom but then again, you can argue that a) all you have to do is read the back cover/inside flap blurb and it's crystal clear, and b) if someone is randomly picking up a book that late in the series with no prior knowledge of it and without reading the blurb and still are unclear on what kind of book it is, they deserve to be confused lol. Maybe I'm being a bit harsh, but u know what I mean :p

Also, don't forget, that I still stand by having that inside flap drool-worth picture to further clarify what "type" of book it is.

I think the titles are also a big deal though. Whenever someone who doesn't know me well asks what I'm reading, if it's something like "Dark Desires After Dusk" or "Carressed by Ice" or "Darkest Pleasure" or "Lover Unleashed" or "Passion Unleashed", I never tell the truth. Cuz honestly, you have to be pretty frikkin comfortable with someone who is a non-reader to tell them that without them judging you. But think how easy it is to tell someone 'oh I'm reading The Guardian' or 'Born of Silence' or 'Shades of Midnight' ...

Given how big the romance market is, I'm truly shocked at how badly they market their books. Cuz if they think it's big now, imagine how big it could be if they made their books readable in public and able to be referrenced to and talked about in passing conversation without judgment and embarrassment.

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Ya know what we need? Pete our resident guy that reads PNR to throw in his thoughts. Harry too. Cause it is clear women will still read the romances rather there is caressing of anybody's ice or rather there is abs on it or not. So calling all males swing by and add some opinions plz>

message 536: by PepperP0t (new)

PepperP0t | 180 comments I agree that pretty much all Romance novels - except maybe Romantic suspense still has a stigma and is like a guilty secret. I think that is one of the reasons GR is soooooooo successful. Like minds and all that. I also think that is one of the taboos that we have to give Twilight kudos for. A basic black cover with one common image. People would read it in public without being embarassed or ashamed about their choice - or even feeling the need to explain. Another possible reason for the uptick is readers - no one can see the cover. My sister-in-law was visiting me a a couple of years ago and when she really looked over my reder ran and got one immediately - her reason, she could read erotica anytime she wanted and wasn't relegated to reading it at home. On the same trip one of my sisters also go one so she didn't have to have an "at home" book and a "bus" book.

message 537: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (last edited Mar 06, 2012 07:11AM) (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments But doesn't that say something about our society still? Like how we may have progressed this far but yet we feel ashamed to even be caught reading a story about a book that cover or even title wise expresses the slightest bit of sexuality in it or on it?

And on some level I can concede the point that I wouldn't be caught dead reading a caressed in twilight or anything else kind of book around my folks or in a public place. And in general if they changed the cover or not I don't really see myself reading an erotica book in public on any kind of reading device. Just the thought of sitting some place and reading the word cock, a few too many times would have me thinking even I'm a dirtier perv than most flashers, lol.

message 541: by Harry (new)

Harry | 95 comments Hello ladies. It seems my opinion is wanted on a good subject here. In all honest wheather it's a guy with six packs or a woman dressed in a silk slip only I don't think men would read or admit to read a prn or any reading at all because in this world for a man reading is consider a nerd and no man for unknown reason want to b seen any less than what they the they are. However for me it don't matter for the cover is not what interest me it's the plot and story line off the book. As covers go I see as at on point every1 is naked in life.
