Rolla, Mo. — Reminiscent of the “Grimm” fairy tale, “Hansel and Gretel”, two alleged and unrelated burglars recently were nabbed after they left a trail of personal and stolen property that led Phelps County deputies to their locations.

And then, they became lost again in the urban and rural forests of Phelps County.

Rolla resident Bryan Anthony Riden, 28, was arrested early Saturday morning after deputies followed a trail of DVDs and video games that had just been stolen from a residence in the 16000 block of U.S. Highway 63 in rural Rolla, according to a report issued by the Phelps County Sheriff’s Department.

The owner of the residence immediately reported the burglary, and deputies discovered someone had broken several windows in the home to gain entry and steal the DVDs, video games and other items found missing from the residence.

After being booked into the Phelps County Jail on charges of burglary in the second-degree and felony stealing, Riden was released 24 hours later when the arrest warrant requested by the department had not been issued.

According to a spokesperson at the PCSD, the prosecuting attorney’s office requested another Probable Cause Statement from the arresting deputies on Tuesday, which needed to be approved by a judge before the court would issue the warrant.

The arrest warrant for Riden was issued Tuesday, and he is sought on charges of burglary in the second-degree, felony stealing and property damage in the first degree.

Unrelated to the alleged burglary by Riden, a 19-year-old rural Rolla man also was arrested Sunday after Phelps County deputies were led to the suspect when he inadvertently left his moped at the crime scene.

According to a PCSD report, the suspect allegedly climbed a fence behind the Fidelity Cable maintenance lot on Old St. James Road, broke into a storage shed and removed a chain saw. He used the chain saw to cut a wall out of a carport to free a tractor that had been blocked in by other vehicles. The suspect then used a Fidelity truck and trailer to remove the tractor from the area.

The suspect left his moped at the scene, which was, subsequently, identified by a deputy who remembered stopping the rider the night before.

When deputies arrived at the suspect’s known area of residence on County Road 7100, they found the stolen tractor and trailer.

Then, while the investigators were collecting evidence, the suspect drove up to the location in the stolen truck.

Francois Christian Orloff was immediately arrested by PCSD deputies on charges of burglary in the second-degree, property damage in the first-degree, tampering in the first-degree, felony stealing and escaping from custody — the tampering and escaping from custody charges were later dropped and not filed by the prosecuting attorney.

While Orloff was being escorted, handcuffed, from the vehicle, he ran from the deputies. After a short foot pursuit, Orloff was taken back into custody.

On Tuesday, Orloff was released on a $50,000 bond.

Shortly after his release from jail, according to unconfirmed reports, Orloff escaped from his bondsman without paying for his bond.

Orloff’s bondsman, Warren Rogers, with Bruce Venture Bail Bonds in Rolla, confirmed he is looking for Orloff, but he would not confirm or deny any reports that Orloff had escaped.

Rogers said information about his client was considered confidential, and he would not offer any further comment.

However, Rogers did request that anyone with information about Orloff or his whereabouts contact him at 578-4959.
